Academic Support Program
Commitment to Success
Chicago-Kent provides a variety of programs
and offices to help ensure that all students develop the skills
needed to succeed academically. Through a variety of workshops,
one-on-one guidance, and readily available resources, all students
have access to information to enable them to become effective
and successful law students.
Workshop Series
All students may attend the Academic Support
Program's "Getting Started" workshop series. Workshops
feature faculty, administrators, and upper-level students explaining
the basic skills needed for law school success, including preparing
for class, creating outlines/flowcharts, studying for exams, writing
exam answers, and interpreting exam results constructively.
ASP Small Group Sessions
The Academic Support Program provides additional
assistance to students who may find law school especially challenging
through the ASP Small Group Sessions, structured meetings for
each doctrinal class led by Teaching Assistants. These weekly
one-hour lessons focus on skills enhancement in the context of
the subject matter for each class; they are not merely review
sessions of class material.
During both semesters of the first year of law school, some students
will be invited to participate in the ASP Small Group Sessions.
In the fall, students are selected for membership in this program
based upon a number of admissions criteria, including, but not
limited to, LSAT score, college GPA, undergraduate course of study,
and length of time since last in school. In the spring semester,
participants are selected based upon their performance during
the fall semester.
Any first-year student interested in participating in the Small
Group Session who was not invited into the program is encouraged
to submit a written petition to Jenna Moroney. Please submit a petition
by February 13, 2008. Petitions for spring ASP will only be accepted
from students with grade point averages below 3.0.
Teaching Assistants
Teaching Assistants are assigned to all first-year
courses, including Legal Writing. TAs are selected from among
Chicago-Kent's top upper-level students based on their overall
performance in law school and in particular courses. TAs in first-year
doctrinal courses hold weekly office hours and at least two seminars
open to all students in the class.
