Academic Support Program

Petitions available for spring ASP small group sessions
The Academic Support Program (ASP) is designed to ensure that all students at Chicago-Kent College of Law develop the skills to succeed academically. The program provides valuable information to all students to empower them to become effective learners. The program also provides additional assistance to students who may find law school especially challenging.

The ASP Small Group Sessions are one aspect of this program. The Small Group Sessions provide the opportunity for a limited number of students to improve skills necessary for success in law school by providing coaching from teaching assistants. These weekly one-hour meetings are not review sessions of class material; the lessons focus on skills enhancement in the context of the class subject matter.

Although participation in the program is voluntary, if you are accepted into the program, you are required to attend all small group sessions offered each week. Day students must attend all three meetings each week, while evening students meet twice each week. This attendance policy is required to provide continuity to the small group sessions.

Once last semester's grades are submitted and grade point averages have been calculated, we will send letters to a select group of first year students inviting them to participate in the ASP small group sessions. Students who do not receive invitations can petition to join the small group sessions.

For the spring semester, petitions will be accepted from students who grades are below 3.0. Students who meet with guideline and are interested in joining the small group sessions should submit a written petition to Jamie Lake. For the spring 2005 semester, petitions are due by February 11, 2005. Petitions can not be completed until after grade point averages have been calculated. Click here to access the petition form. You can find more information about the ASP program on the ASP website.

Helpful Handout Now Available Online
As you are planning your exam reviews with professors, please take a look at Learning from Experience: How to Interpret Your Exam Results and Plan Ahead. This ASP handout walks students through reviewing their exam answers, meeting with professors about exams, doing personal study assessments, and making a plan for the spring semester. All first year students will receive a copy of this handout in their Legal Writing classes during the next few weeks.
