The procedures for subpoenaing records, tapes, etc., from police departments other than Chicago Police Department are similar to those previously mentioned. (See sample subpoenae shown in the Handbook Exhibit K.) However, it is a good idea to phone the Records Division of the appropriate department before you complete the subpoena to see if that particular department has any special requirements.
Also, we serve most other police departments by mail after we have phoned them to see if the department will accept service by mail. The only major differences in service by mail are:
1. You send the particular department one copy of the subpoena keeping the original on file here, and
2. You do not complete the Proof of Service on the back of the subpoena form.
