PUBLIC INTEREST LAW INITIATIVE (PILI)

Edward Kraus

PILI Fellows working at the Law Offices will work on challenging criminal or civil litigation under the close supervision of one or more of ten of the Law Offices' clinical professors, each of whom is an experienced practicing attorney. They will participate in all aspects of the cases to which they are assigned. Thus, fellows will be involved in client contact, litigation strategy sessions, legal research and writing, drafting of pleadings and motions, discovery, settlement, trials or other court proceedings, etc.

The two criminal defense attorneys represent defendants in serious felony cases (including appointed death penalty cases) in the federal and state trial and appellate courts. Three of the civil litigation attorneys concentrate on employment discrimination cases and civil rights matters but handle other types of civil litigation as well. One civil litigation attorney represents low income persons with disputes before the Internal Revenue Service, United States Tax Court, and the United States District Court. One attorney represents clients with Social Security disability issues, one attorney specializes in family law and one attorney represents people with immigration issues.

The Law Offices has worked on notable cases, including proceedings before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the defense of prison inmates charged with murder in connection with a prison riot, civil rights lawsuits alleging police brutality, and an employment discrimination class action suit on behalf of more than four hundred people.

If fellows wish to concentrate their efforts in either the civil or criminal practice, the Law Offices will seek to accommodate them.

Public Interest Resource Center (PIRC)

Vivien Gross

Public Interest Resource Center (PIRC) links Chicago-Kent students to various not-for-profit opportunities and public service projects - both legal and non-legal - in need of short-term or long-term volunteers. Depending on your interests, time, and travel limitations, PIRC makes it easy for you to participate in all kinds of public service projects and opportunities. PIRC is also an invaluable resource for the latest information about public interest internships and career opportunities.

If you want to volunteer on a project, we can help you find one that’s perfect for your interests, location and time requirements. If you are already volunteering in a public interest position, contact PIRC to find out if your public interest volunteerism qualifies towards the hourly requirements of the Certificate.
