Master of Intellectual Property Management & Markets
The master's in intellectual property management and markets at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) is the first degree program in the country to provide a foundational understanding of intellectual property that integrates perspectives and skills from five key disciplines:
- business
- computer science
- design
- engineering
- law
Graduates of this program will be equipped to take strategic and leadership roles in leveraging and managing intellectual property whether through marketing, research and development, portfolio management, legal protection, or business transactions.
The program consists of one year of full-time study (30 credit hours) starting in the fall term and running through the following summer. Courses track the life cycle of intellectual property from its inception to full exploitation. Electives covering basic instruction in the fields of engineering, law and business provide an opportunity to enhance or augment prior education or business experiences. The Capstone Class provides an experiential learning opportunity integrating the students' newly acquired knowledge, experiences and expertise.
Instructional teams will be drawn from five IIT colleges as well as from the world of IP practitioners. Course work includes doctrinal as well as skills instruction and practice with real-world problems and real-world solutions. Almost all classes will draw instructors from at least two disciplines. Students will work together as a cohort, drawing upon one another's experiences and ideas.
Illinois Institute of Technology, an international, Ph.D-granting research university with world-renowned programs in engineering, architecture, the sciences, humanities, psychology, business, law and design, is uniquely positioned to understand the interrelationship of the various facets of intellectual property. IIT is the first university in the United States to offer this unique interdisciplinary program.
