Chicago-Kent's international legal studies program provides fundamental skills, familiarity with
foreign laws, an understanding of clients' global needs, and a vision of the requirements of lawyering in the international sphere.
Students in the program earn the Certificate in International and Comparative Law by successfully completing fourteen credit hours of course study in international and comparative law, including a two credit hour seminar or specialized independent research.
The Chicago-Kent faculty includes several nationally recognized scholars in
the areas of international and comparative law, and the faculty as a whole strongly believes in
the importance of transnational legal studies in the future development of law in the United
States.
The Library of International Relations (LIR), a major reference center for international study, forms part of the Information Center at the Downtown Campus and is the basis for significant research and teaching in international law. The LIR, one of the few libraries in the United States with a comprehensive collection of United Nations and European Economic Community papers, supports an expanding international law curriculum.
Attorneys trained in other countries, candidates for Chicago-Kent's Masters in International and
Comparative Law degree (LL.M.), attend courses and seminars in international law along with
J.D. students. The perspectives of these foreign students, many of whom are Fulbright Fellows,
contribute to the educational development of their American classmates. Recently, students have
come from countries as diverse as the People's Republic of China, India, France, South Africa,
Peru, Austria, Brazil, Thailand, Germany, Belgium, Ecuador, Mexico, Japan and Papua, New
Guinea.
The Chancellor Kent International
Law Society promotes the understanding of international law and provides
additional educational and employment opportunities for Chicago-Kent students.
The Society hosts the annual International Law Career Day Conference for
midwestern law schools, a series of international law speakers at the
College of Law each year, and an annual alumnae/i reception. The Society
also organizes the annual Chicago-Kent Jessup International Law Moot Court
Competition and is active in the International Law Student Association
and the American Society of International Law.
