CO-CURRICULUM ACTIVITIES
The Certificate Program in Labor and Employment
Law and the
Institute for Law and the Workplace. The Certificate Program in
Labor and
Employment Law is able to draw on the resources of the Institute
for
Law and the Workplace to enhance students' educational experiences.
Through the ILW, students have numerous opportunities to supplement
the formal curriculum and to become better acquainted with the
labor and
employment law community.
Publications
Students have the opportunity to serve on student editorial boards for
the Institute's two publications.
Employee Rights & Employment Policy Journal is a faculty-edited,
peer-reviewed scholarly journal, publishing diverse perspectives on legal
and law-related issues focused on the well-being of employees in the workplace.
The Journal is published twice each year and is a joint project with the
National Employee Rights Institute. The Journal published its inaugural
issue in 1997. In its brief history, the Journal has established itself
as a leader in its field. It has attracted a wide array of established
and junior scholars among its authors and has been cited extensively in
the scholarly literature and popular press (including the Wall Street
Journal) and by the courts (including the United States Court of Appeals
for the First Circuit and the California Supreme Court). A Tale of Two
Statutes by Professor Charles Morris, published in volume 2, was the subject
of a special workshop at an Industrial Relations Research Association
national meeting.
Illinois Public Employee Relations Report is published quarterly
and
contains information and analyses of interest to attorneys and labor
relations professionals who focus on the public sector. The Report is
a
leading vehicle for the discussion of public employment issues in the
state.
It is co-published with the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations,
University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. Student editors edit
Report articles and research and write a section on Recent Developments
that is a feature of every issue.
Conferences and Lecture Series
The Institute sponsors numerous regular conferences and lecture series.
Many of these programs are open to the public. Students are encouraged
to attend these programs, always at no or only nominal charge.
The Kenneth M. Piper Memorial Lecture began in 1979 with an in
augural lecture by National Labor Relations Board Chair John Fanning.
The Piper Lecture honors the memory of Kenneth M. Piper, a senior labor
relations executive with Motorola and Bausch & Lomb and has established
itself as one of the premier academic labor law lecture series in the
world. It regularly features leading scholars, policy makers, and leaders
of labor
and management. The lecture series is funded through the Kenneth M. Piper
Memorial Endowment, established by Mrs. Virginia Piper in 1981.
The Distinguished Labor Leader Lecture Series began in 1998 with
an
inaugural lecture by Communications Workers of America President Morton
Bahr. This lecture series is cosponsored by the Institute and the Chicago
Federation of Labor. The series brings national and local leaders of organized
labor to the law school for a public lecture addressing cutting edge issues
in the workplace.
The Federal Sector Labor Relations and Labor Law Program began
in
1982. It is the longest-running and largest annual conference on labor
law and labor relations in the federal government and the Postal Service
held outside of Washington, D.C. Each year lawyers and other labor relations
professionals gather at Chicago-Kent. They listen to keynote addresses
by heads of the neutral employment relations agencies and by leaders of
federal and postal labor unions and executive agencies, and attend workshops
focused on recent developments.
The Illinois Public Sector Labor Relations Law Program began in 1984.
This annual conference is co-sponsored with the Illinois Labor Relations
Board and the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board, the two state
agencies that regulate labor relations in the public sector. The program
is the major conference for lawyers and other labor relations professionals
in the public sector in Illinois. Each year over 500 professionals from
all across Illinois and neighboring states gather at Chicago-Kent to exchange
perspectives, update knowledge, and hear from leading practitioners
and policy makers in the state.
Ad-Hoc Programs
Additionally, the Institute's visibility as a leading national center
for labor and employment law has positioned it to host numerous special
events.
Several of these are discussed in the Highlights from the Institute's
First
Five Years, later in this brochure. Several have been developed specially
for certificate program students. These include periodic programs on careers
in labor and employment law and a visit by EEOC Vice Chair Paul Igasaki
to Chicago-Kent in February 2000. Mr. Igasaki attended a special luncheon
with students, where he discussed developments in equal employment opportunity
law and spoke informally with students about the practice of employment
law.

EEOC Vice Chair Paul Igasaki Speaks informally with students Tracy
Billows '01 and R. Kirk Williams '00 during a special visit to the Institute.
