31st Annual Kenneth M. Piper Lecture

This lecture is presented by the Kenneth M. Piper Endowment, established by a gift from Mrs. Kenneth M. Piper in memory of her husband. Mr. Piper was a distinguished executive with Motorola, Inc. and Bausch & Lomb, Inc., who made important contributions in human resources and labor relations for more than two decades.

LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT LAW SOCIETY (LELS)
WELCOME BACK TO SPRING semester at Kent! (o.k., it is a bit drab and dreary in Chicago... but give it a few months).
The LELS executive board meet on Thursday (see attached minutes) and had a very productive meeting.
This semester, our plans include:
1 - Offering our informal lunches and dinners as ways to meet one another. The first dinner is this coming Thursday, 1/29, coordinated by Jaz Park (2L) and Dan Kaspar (1L). Look for details coming out soon.
2 - Socials that may include (we're still working on this): ice skating, whirlyball, and bowling.
3 - Great programs, including:
a - A Program on "What does the Obama administration mean for Labor and Employment Law". We plan to work heavily with LELS/Chicago-Kent Alumni to provide a 90 minute program followed by a reception (a great way to meet alums). Tentatively, this event will occur in April. Chair - Mark Hoffman (4L).
b - A Program for 1Ls & 2Ls on selecting classes, getting experience, networking, etc... all with a LEL focus. Chair - Gabe Goodwin (2L and our webmaster)
c - A reception for newly admitted students interested in LEL. Chair - Thad Goodchild (1L and class rep).
d - A Program on 'non-firm' job opportunities: hearing officers, administrative law jobs, in-house counsel, etc. Chair - Renee Fath (3L and LELS V.P.).
4 - We'll be revising our constitution to bring it up to the modern era and make organizational improvements.
5 - We'll continue to send out copies of interesting LEL articles (I'll be sending out an article about the Lilly Ledbetter Act in the next few days).
6 - A LELS community announcements e-mail to help us build community.
7 - We are updating our web page. If you have ideas, suggestions or skills to contribute, please contact Gabe Goodwin, our web master.
As you can see, we have ambitious plans for the semester. We need as many of you to get involved as possible. If you'd like to be on a sub-committee, please contact the chair listed above.
Also, if you' d like to attend a future executive board event, the meetings will be from
5-6pm: M. 2/16; Th. 3/26; and M. 4/20.

Topic:† The scope of permissible topics is broad, i.e. any aspect of public or private labor or employment law. Students are encouraged to present a
a)public policy issue
b) critique of a leading case or doctrine
c) comment on a statute or the need for a statutory modification, or
d) comment on a common law doctrine
Eligibility: All currently enrolled undergraduate law students attending accredited law schools in the United States.

PRIZES: First prize - $1,500.00/Second prize - $1,000.00/Third prize/$500.00
In addition to a monetary award, the winner will have his/her article published in a future issue of the College newsletter and posted on the College's website. The Labor Lawyer, a journal of ideas and developments in labor and employment law, published by the American Bar Association and the Section of Labor and Employment Law, has indicated a strong desire to publish the winning entry, if it meets their publication standards. Winners will also be invited guests at the Annual Induction Dinner of the College, where they will be recognized and honored during the evening program.
