LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT LAW SOCIETY (LELS)

SAVES THESE DATES:

- Th. 3/26 - GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING & VOTING ON THE PROPOSED CONSTITUTION - a light meal will be served. 5pm - 5:45pm, room C25. Previous e-mails with full details about the constitution are at the end of this message. Copies of the current and proposed constitutions are attached.

- Tu. 3/31 - THINGS FOR 1Ls AND 2Ls TO THINK ABOUT: summer class selection, internships, faculty, research,networking,etc. A diverse panel of 3Ls and 4Ls in the Labor and Employment certificate program (Rob Paszta, Tracy Gruber, Juliette Gallegos, and Mark Hoffman) will share their tips and insights. 5pm - 5:45pm, room C20.

- F. 4/17 - WHIRLYBALL (social outing) - This evening activity is $15 if your pay in advance, or $20 if you pay after the registration deadline. So far, at least 15 of us are going... why not join us? For details, and to pay, contact Dan Kaspar.

- Tu. 4/21 - ABA SECTION ON LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT LAW PANEL/PROGRAM on work in labor and employment law. A diverse panel of practitioners from both sides of the labor and employment law equation will talk about what they do and the practice of labor and employment law. Lunch is provided AND the ABA usually gives each person attending a really great labor and employment law-related book. noon - 1pm, room 170.

- F. 5/1 - We hope to offer an amazing program, "WHAT THE OBAMA PRESIDENCY MEANS FOR LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT LAW," which will feature Chicago-Kent alumni from all aspects of labor and employment law. This program is also targeted at bringing alumni back to Kent, so it is a GREAT networking opportunity. Yes, it is the last day of classes, but unwind on a Friday afternoon and meet some interesting people. Program will start around 3pm, with a reception following at 5pm. Interested in helping? - we hope to have another fundraising bake sale... if you'd like to coordinate (not a lot of work), contact Mark Hoffman

As you can see, we have MUCH planned. I do hope you will join us for one or all of the programs.

Writing Competition

Sponsor/Title:  The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers 2009 Writing Competition Rules (click on link for PDF)

Topic:  The scope of permissible topics is broad, i.e. any aspect of public or private labor or employment law. Students are encouraged to present a

a)public policy issue
b) critique of a leading case or doctrine
c) comment on a statute or the need for a statutory modification, or
d) comment on a common law doctrine

Eligibility
:
All currently enrolled undergraduate law students attending accredited law schools in the United States.

Guidelines: There are formatting guidelines that must be followed. For information visit the website at <http://www.kentlaw.edu/academics/plel/record.html>  hard copies are also available at Sharon Wyatt-Jordan’s desk, room 803.

PRIZES: First prize - $1,500.00/Second prize - $1,000.00/Third prize/$500.00

In addition to a monetary award, the winner will have his/her article published in a future issue of the College newsletter and posted on the College's website. The Labor Lawyer, a journal of ideas and developments in labor and employment law, published by the American Bar Association and the Section of Labor and Employment Law, has indicated a strong desire to publish the winning entry, if it meets their publication standards. Winners will also be invited guests at the Annual Induction Dinner of the College, where they will be recognized and honored during the evening program. PLEASE NOTE: All articles must be e-mailed no later than 5:00pm (pdst) on May 15, 2009 or post marked no later than May 15, 2009.
