Transfer Students & Visiting Students

Students who are currently enrolled at another ABA-accredited law school and who wish to attend Chicago-Kent College of Law have two options: they may apply to transfer to Chicago-Kent as either full- or part-time J.D. students, or they may enroll for a term as a visiting student and transfer the credit hours earned back to their home institution.

Transfer Students

Chicago-Kent welcomes transfer applications from students who have previously enrolled for at least one year at another ABA-accredited law school. Transfer students may seek admission as either full- or part-time J.D. students, and may also seek admission into the certificate programs in Intellectual Property Law, International and Comparative Law, Environmental and Energy Law, Labor and Employment Law, Public Interest Law, criminal litigation, and Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution.

The Admissions Committee will consider transfer applicants for admission based upon their law school performance in addition to Chicago-Kent's other admission standards. Transfer students may apply to begin their studies in either the fall or spring semester. Students admitted for the fall semester may choose to begin their studies during the preceding summer semester.

All transfer applicants are automatically considered for available merit scholarships and are notified in their letter of acceptance if they are selected for an award. Transfer applicants are required to submit all materials required of regular applicants (application, personal statement, fee, official LSDAS report) plus official transcripts from all law schools attended, at least one letter of recommendation, preferably from a law school professor, and statements from all previously attended law schools indicating eligibility to continue studies. Students who are not currently in good standing at another law school are not eligible for transfer admission and will not be considered.

Transfer decisions are generally made after the record of all law school work is submitted. However, the Admissions Committee may, at their discretion, conditionally admit applicants before receiving a record of the applicant's final semester at the school from which they are transferring. In this case, acceptance is conditional based upon satisfactory academic performance in the applicant's final semester.

The Office of Admissions will generally inform applicants of the admission decision by mid-July for the fall semester and mid-December for the spring semester. The extent of transfer credit will be decided on an individual basis at the time of enrollment by the Assistant Dean for Academic Administration. Eighty-seven credit hours are required to earn the J.D. Transfer students must take a minimum of 54 credits at Chicago-Kent in order to receive their degree.

For additional information about the transfer admission process, please contact the Office of Admissions at (312) 906-5020 or by e-mail at admit@kentlaw.edu.

Visiting Students

Students currently registered at another ABA-accredited law school who would like to visit Chicago-Kent for a term must complete an Application for Enrollment as a Visiting Student, submit a current law school transcript directly from their law school and submit a letter from their Dean stating that they are in good standing, eligible to visit at Chicago-Kent for the semester(s) indicated and that the hours earned will be accepted for credit.

In addition to the regular class schedule, visiting students may take courses in the certificate programs in Intellectual Property Law, International and Comparative Law, Environmental and Energy Law, Labor and Employment Law, Public Interst Law, criminal litigation, and Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution. For information on the courses and faculty at Chicago-Kent, please refer to the current Schedule of Classes, course descriptions and faculty biographies

Additional information about visiting at Chicago-Kent is available online or by contacting the Registrar's Office (312-906-5080 or REGQ@kentlaw.edu).
