Chicago-Kent Scholarship Opportunities
Deadline: Friday, November 8, 2002
The following Chicago-Kent
scholarships are currently available through the Office
of Admissions. Application instructions for each award
are listed below. Applications are due in the Office of
Admissions no later than Friday, November 8, 2002.
Application Process:
You must submit a separate
application for each scholarship for which you are applying. Letters
of application should be addressed to Nicole Speck, Director
of Admissions, and returned to the Office of Admissions
on the 2nd floor in Suite 230. Questions about the available
awards should be addressed to Nicole
Speck, Director of Admissions.
Asian Law Student
Scholarship
The Asian Law Student Scholarship was established by alumnae/i
and friends of Chicago-Kent, including the Chinese Bar
Association, to provide financial assistance to students
of Asian descent. Students, alumnae/i and friends
celebrated the inception of this scholarship fund at a
Chinese New Year reception in February 1997. In
awarding the scholarship, the scholarship committee will
give preference to students planning to serve the Asian
community. Interested applicants should submit an
essay describing their commitment to serving the needs
of the Asian American community, a statement describing
their financial situation and how the scholarship would
help to alleviate their need, and a letter of recommendation
by a person who can be contacted by the Chinese American
Bar Association. Applicants must be in good standing
and must demonstrate commitment to serving the needs of
the Asian American community, a commitment to and interest
in pro bono and/or public interest legal work, financial
need and leadership potential. The recipient will
be selected by the Chinese American Bar Association.
The scholarship amount is $1,000.
Frances J. Larkowski
Scholarship
The Frances J. Larkowski Scholarship was established in
1999 with a contribution from the Rosenstiel Foundation.
Additional funds were raised by the Chicago-Kent Polish
American Law Student Association. This scholarship is
awarded to a student with financial need, demonstrated
leadership abilities and an interest in supporting the
Polish American community. Applicants for this scholarship
should submit a letter of application describing their
work in support of the Polish American community and how
this scholarship would help to alleviate their financial
need. The scholarship amount is $1,000.
The Rubenstein Scholarship
Fund
The Rubenstein Scholarship Fund was established by Jeffrey
and Susan Rubenstein, two friends of the law school. Mr.
Rubenstein is an adjunct professor at Chicago-Kent and
a partner at the firm of Much Shelist Freed Denenberg
& Ament. The recipient of this fund is selected based
on financial need with preference given to students who
are financing their law school education by working in
non-professional positions or part-time jobs in the hospitality
or service industries. Applicants should submit a letter
of application describing their qualificactions for the
award and how it would help to alleviate their financial
need. The scholarship amount is $2,600.
The Honorable
Dean J. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund was established in 1991 by the Class of 1967,
family, faculty, colleagues and friends in memory of Dean
Sodaro, '53, to provide assistance based on need. Applicants
for this award should submit a letter of application describing
their financial situation and explaining how this scholarship
would help to alleviate their financial need. The scholarship
amount is $1,000.

organizations. Information about the scholarship awards
that are currently available is listed below. Award
notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

NEW! DuPage Association
of Women Lawyers Foundation, Judge Helen C. Kinney Scholarship
Application Deadline: October 30, 2002
To honor the memory, vision and leadership of Judge Helen
C. Kinney, the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers has established
a not-for-profit foundation to award the Judge Helen C.
Kinney Scholarship. All second and third-year women law
students who are present or past residents of DuPage County
and who are enrolled in an accredited law school in Illinois
are eligible for this scholarship. The Foundation anticipates
awarding two $1,000 scholarships to deserving women law
students. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions,
Suite 230.
NEW! Hellenic Bar Association
Scholarships
Application Deadline: October 22, 2002
The Hellenic Bar Association of Illinois (HBA), an organization
of Illinois attorneys of Hellenic descent, will award scholarships
to second- and third-year law students of Hellenic descent
based upon academic performance and demonstrable financial
need. Applications for HBA Scholarships are available
in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.
NEW! Michael J. Baker Scholarship
Fund of the Northeast Johnson County NAACP
Application Deadline: November 30, 2002
The Michael J. Baker Scholarship Fund will award a $1,000
scholarship each February to an African-American post-secondary
student who can demonstrate need and academic promise. The
recipient will be honored at the NAACP's Martin Luther King
Day Program in February. Applications are available in the
Office of Admissions, Suite 230.
NEW! Kankakee County Society
of Women in Law Book Scholarship
Application Deadline: October 15, 2002
The Society of Women in Law (SWIL) Scholarship Committee
will annually award scholarships to deserving women law
students of an accredited Illinois law school. This year,
two $500 scholarships are available to help defray the cost
of books. To qualify, applicants must be a resident of Illinois
and any county other than Cook. The Scholarship Committee
will consider financial need, and applicants must document
their financial need when requested to do so. Additional
information is available in the Office of Admissions, Suite
230.
Puerto Rican Bar Association Scholarship Award
Application Deadline: January 31, 2003
The Puerto Rican Bar Association (PRBA) provides scholarships
of $2,000 to Latino students attending law school in the
U.S. PRBA selects recipients based on financial need and
academic promise. All applicants must be a first or second
year student (third year evening students are also eligible)
in a J.D. degree program at an ABA approved law school.
Students working toward their LL.M. are not eligible for
this award. Applications and additional information are
available in the Office of Admissions, 2nd Floor.
Puerto Rican Legal Defense & Education Fund - Father
Joseph P. Fitzpatrick Scholarship
Application Deadline: February 28, 2003
The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF)
was founded in 1972 to struggle for social change and secure
justice and equality for Latinos. In 1995, PRLDEF established
the Father Joseph P. Fitzpatrick Scholarship Fund to support
PRLDEF in its efforts to ensure that talented Latino law
students have the resources needed to pursue a career in
public interest law. The scholarship fund provides four
awards of $1,500 to Latino students who demonstrate academic
promise, involvement in the Latino community and financial
need. Latino students attending law school in the U.S. are
eligible to apply. All applicants must be a first or second
year student (third year evening students are also eligible)
in a J.D. degree program at an ABA approved law school.
Students working toward their LL.M. are not eligible for
this award. Applicants must demonstrate financial need as
well as a commitment to the Latino community. Applications

South Suburban Bar Association Scholarship
Application Deadline: November 12, 2002
The South Suburban Bar Association Scholarship Committee
will award a $1,500 scholarship to a deserving law student
of an accredited local law school. Applicants must
be a resident of the South Suburbs of Cook County and must
have a present interest to practice law in the South Suburbs
upon graduation. Financial need will be considered
by the Scholarship Committee and applicants must document
their financial need when requested to do so by the Scholarship
Committee. Students interested in being considered
for the scholarship award must submit a brief resume for
review by the South Suburban Bar Association Scholarship
Committee. The Committee may conduct interviews of
applicants or, alternatively, may in its discretion, recommend
a candidate to the Board of the South Suburban Bar Association
based upon a review of the resumes submitted. In order
to receive the Scholarship Award, the student must attend
the South Suburban Bar Association's Installation Dinner
Dance in December 2002. Additional information about
this scholarship is available in the Office of Admissions,
