External Scholarships

Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

NEW! Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarships
Application Deadline: April 30, 2003

The Attorney-CPA Foundation will award ten scholarships in 2003 in amounts ranging from $250 to $1,000.The scholarships are open to law students who will be entering their third year of law school in Fall 2003 who have obtained a CPA certificate. Applicants will be evaluated based upon their academic performance, leadership in the school and community and need for assistance in completing their studies.  Recipients will be selected by the Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarship Committee.  Applications are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230, or on the Foundation's web site at www.attorney-cpa.com/foundation.html or by calling the Attorney-CPA Foundation at 800-272-2889.


NEW! Bohemian Lawyers' Association of Chicago Scholarships
Application Deadline: April 1, 2003

The Bohemian Lawyer's Association of Chicago will award scholarships this spring to area students. All persons of Czech, Moravian, Ruthenian, Silesian or Slovak ancestry who are enrolled in an accredited law school in the greater Chicagoland area are eligible to apply.  Applications are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.


DuPage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers Scholarships
Application Deadline: April 30, 2003

The DuPage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers will award scholarships to students of Italian extraction who have completed at least one semester of law school and are currently enrolled in law school. Awards will be made in mid-May 2003. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.


Real Estate Educational Foundation Scholarships
Application Deadline: April 1, 2003

The Illinois Real Estate Educational Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established to aid and promote the work of real estate education throughout Illinois. Several scholarship opportunities are available. The Thomas F. Seay Scholarship will be awarded to students who intend to pursue careers in the real estate industry. The James M. Kinney Scholarship will be awarded to children or grandchildren of an employee of a local, state or National Association of REALTORS® in Illinois, to pursue an education which will lead them into productive careers in any chosen area. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.


Cabaniss, Johnston Scholarship
Application Deadline: June 6, 2003

The firm of Cabaniss, Johnston, Gardner, Dumas & O'Neal of Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama and the Alabama Law Foundation, Inc. will award a scholarship in memory of the firm's founding partners, Edward Harmon Cabaniss and Forney Johnston. This scholarship is awarded annually to a law student who is a resident of Alabama, is attending an accredited law school in the United States and will be a second year student.  The scholarship will cover tuition and books for the second year of law school to a maximum of $5,000.  A second place scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded at the committee's discretion. While academic achievement is the key factor in determining eligibility for the scholarship, consideration will be given to other factors such as conscientiousness, dependability, civic involvement, financial need and dedication to the highest ethical standards.  Applications may be downloaded from www.alfinc.org and are also available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.


Ethel Louise Armstrong Foundation, Inc.
Application Deadline: June 1, 2003

The Ethel Louise Armstrong Foundation, Inc. (ELA) scholarship will provide financial assistance to women with physical disabilities who are enrolled in a college or university graduate program in the United States. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,000 per year. Applications and additional information are available on the ELA website at www.ela.org.


Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Fund
Application Deadline: April 1, 2003

The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving Berks County, Pennsylvania resident embarking on his or her second year at an accredited law school. The $3,000 award is presented annually at the Berks County Bar Association Law Day event. Applications and additional information are available on the Berks County Community Foundation website at www.bccf.org.


DuPage County Bar Foundation, Hartman E. Stime Scholarship
Application Deadline: April 1, 2003

The DuPage County Bar Association will award a $2,000 scholarship to a DuPage County resident who will commence their second year of law school in Fall 2003. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of prior academic achievement and economic need. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230. The scholarship selection committee will interview applicants at their Wheaton office on April 12, 2003. The recipient will be recognized at the annual Law Day Luncheon on May 1, 2003.


Sidney B. William Jr. Minority Scholarship Program
Application Deadline: February 28, 2003

The American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation (AIPLEF) will award $10,000 scholarships and internships for minority law school students pursuing careers in Intellectual Property Law. The selection criteria include a demonstrated commitment to developing a career in intellectual property law; academic performance at the undergraduate, graduate and law school levels; financial need; and general factors such as leadership skills, community activities or special accomplishments. Applicants must be members of an underrepresented minority group; be currently enrolled in or accepted to an ABA accredited law school; be U.S. citizens; and demonstrate an intent to engage in the full-time practice of intellectual property law. Polish Women's Civic Club, Inc.
Application Deadline: June 28, 2003

The Polish Women's Civic Club, Inc. is a philanthropic organization of American women of Polish descent interested in discovering the richness of their Polish heritage and sharing it with others. Realizing that education is the main tool for deepening an appreciation of culture and advancing a people, the Club supports educational activities and the personal efforts of Polish American students, male and female, through financial scholarships. To qualify for a scholarship, applicants must (1) be a United States citizen; (2) have at least one parent of Polish heritage; (3) be a Chicago area resident enrolled as a full-time student in their second year or beyond; (4) exhibit definite financial need; and (5) have acceptable grades. Scholarship applications are by enclosing a self-addressed stamped envelope and writing to: Polish Women's Civic Club, Attn: Eunice Warda, Education Committee Chairman, P.O. Black Women Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago, Inc.
Application Deadline: March 1, 2003

The Black Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater Chicago (BWLA) is offering scholarships to second- and third-year black women law students in the extended Chicago area. Applicants must submit a completed BWLA scholarship application, resume, law school transcripts, letter of good standing, two letters of recommendation and an essay. Applications and additional information are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.


Warner Norcross & Judd LLP Scholarship for Minority Law Students
Application Deadline: April 15, 2003

The law firm of Warner Norcross & Judd LLP has established a fund to provide encouragement and financial assistance to students of racial and ethnic minority heritage pursuing a career in law. One $5,000 scholarship for the 2003-04 academic year will be awarded to a minority student accepted to or presently attending an accredited law school within the United States. Applicants must be former or current residents of Michigan or attend a Michigan law school. All applicants must also have a GPA of 2.5 or above at their college or law school, demonstrate financial need, and provide a statement of goals and aspirations related to their studies in the legal profession. Northwest Suburban Bar Association Foundation
Application Deadline: March 14, 2003

The Northwest Suburban Bar Association Foundation will award scholarships to residents of the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, who have expressed a commitment to the highest scholastic standards. Factors considered will include scholastic achievement, involvement in school activities, extra curricular activities as well as financial need. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.


National Federation of the Blind Scholarship Program
Application Deadline: March 31, 2003

The National Federation of the Blind will award thirty scholarships to high-achieving legally blind students. Awards range from $3,000 to $10,000 and recipients will be notified in May. All scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community and financial need. Applications and additional information are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.


ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship
Application Deadline: February 28, 2003

The mission of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund is to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to ensure that these students have the opportunity to attend law school for three years. The scholarship fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during his/her time in law school. Applicants for the scholarship must be entering, first-year law students in Fall 2003. Students already in law school are not eligible to apply for the award. Applications are available online at www.abanet.org/fje or in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.


Blind Service Association
Application Deadline: Spring 2003

The Blind Service Association will offer scholarship awards to students who are blind or visually impaired. Applicants must be legally blind residents of the six-county Chicago Metropolitan Area, and must plan to enroll in the 2003 academic year in an accredited undergraduate, graduate, vocational, technical or professional school. Part-time students are welcome to apply. Awards may be as high as $2,500. Applications will be available after January 5, 2003 and the deadline for receipt of the application will be included in the application package. Just the Beginning Foundation Scholarship Awards
Application Deadline: March 1, 2003

The Just the Beginning Foundation (JTBF) will offer three scholarships in the amount of $2,500 to law students in Illinois for 2002-2003. Scholarship awards must be used during the 2002-03 academic year. Awards will be based on the applicant's academic record, extracurricular activities (with an emphasis on service oriented extracurricular activities directed toward the enhancement of opportunities for African-Americans), letters of recommendation, financial need, and essay. Finalists will be invited to interview with the JTBF's scholarship committee. The scholarship application and additional information are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.


Jewish Vocational Service, Gertrude and Harry G. Fins Scholarship Fund
Application Deadline: March 1, 2003

The Jewish Vocational Service of Metropolitan Chicago will award scholarships from the Gertrude and Harry G. Fins Scholarship Fund for the 2003-2004 academic year. Awards typically range from $1,000 to $5,000. To be eligible, you must: be Jewish; be enrolled full-time at Chicago-Kent or one of the other designated law schools; be domiciled in the Chicago metropolitan community; establish financial need; and demonstrate career promise. All applicants must be available for a personal interview at the JVS offices prior to May 1, 2003. Puerto Rican Legal Defense & Education Fund - Father Joseph P. Fitzpatrick Scholarship
Application Deadline: February 28, 2003

The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF) was founded in 1972 to struggle for social change and secure justice and equality for Latinos. In 1995, PRLDEF established the Father Joseph P. Fitzpatrick Scholarship Fund to support PRLDEF in its efforts to ensure that talented Latino law students have the resources needed to pursue a career in public interest law. The scholarship fund provides four awards of $1,500 to Latino students who demonstrate academic promise, involvement in the Latino community and financial need. Latino students attending law school in the U.S. Are eligible to apply. All applicants must be a first or second year student (third year evening students are also eligible) in a JD Degree program at an ABA approved law school. Students working toward their LL.M. Are not eligible for this award. Applicants must demonstrate financial need as well as a commitment to the Latino community. Applications and additional information are available in the Office of Admissions, 2nd Floor.
