Chicago-Kent Scholarship Opportunities

Application Deadline: Monday, February 16, 2004

The following Chicago-Kent scholarships are currently available through the Office of Admissions. Awards will be made for the Spring 2004 semester. Application instructions for each award are listed below. Applications are due in the Office of Admissions no later than Monday, February 16, 2004.

Asian Law Student Scholarship
The Asian Law Student Scholarship was established by alumnae/i and friends of Chicago-Kent, including the Chinese Bar Association, to provide financial assistance to students of Asian descent.  Students, alumnae/i and friends celebrated the inception of this scholarship fund at a Chinese New Year reception in February 1997. The recipient of the scholarship will be selected by the Chinese American Bar Association. Applicants must be in good standing and must demonstrate commitment to serving the needs of the Asian American community, a commitment to and interest in pro bono and/or public interest legal work, financial need and leadership potential. In awarding the scholarship, the scholarship committee will give preference to students planning to serve the Asian community. The scholarship amount is $1,000.

Law School Association Board of Directors Scholarship
The Law School Association Board of Directors Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the Board in 1998 to provide scholarship assistance to law students demonstrating academic merit and financial need. For Spring 2004, the Board plans to make several awards of at least $1,000 each. Applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions.

The Honorable Dean J. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund was established in 1991 by the Class of 1967, family, faculty, colleagues and friends in memory of Dean Sodaro, '53, to provide assistance based on need. The scholarship amount is $1,000. Applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions.

Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

NEW! Polish Women's Civic Club, Inc.
Application Deadline: July 1, 2004

The Polish Women's Civic Club, Inc. is a philanthropic organization of American women of Polish descent interested in discovering the richness of their Polish heritage and sharing it with others. Realizing that education is the main tool for deepening an appreciation of culture and advancing a people, the Club supports educational activities and the personal efforts of Polish American students, male and female, through financial scholarships. To qualify for a scholarship, applicants must (1) be a United States citizen; (2) have at least one parent of Polish heritage; (3) be a Chicago area resident enrolled as a full-time student in their second year or beyond; (4) exhibit definite financial need; and (5) have acceptable grades. Scholarship applications may be obtained by enclosing a self-addressed stamped envelope and writing to: Polish Women's Civic Club, Attn: Eunice Warda, Education Committee Chairman, P.O. Box 684, Lake Villa, Illinois 60046.

NEW! DuPage County Bar Foundation, Hartman E. Stime Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 26, 2004

The DuPage County Bar Association will award a $2,000 scholarship to a DuPage County resident who will commence their second year of law school in Fall 2004. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of prior academic achievement and economic need. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230. The scholarship selection committee will interview applicants at their Wheaton office on April 17, 2004. The recipient will be recognized at the annual Law Day Luncheon on April 29, 2004.

Blind Service Association
Application Deadline: Spring 2004

The Blind Service Association will offer scholarship awards to students who are blind or visually impaired. Applicants must be legally blind residents of the six-county Chicago Metropolitan Area, and must plan to enroll in the 2004 academic year in an accredited undergraduate, graduate, vocational, technical or professional school. Part-time students are welcome to apply. Awards may be as high as $3,000. Applications will be available after January 5, 2004 and the deadline for receipt of the application will be included in the application package. West Suburban Bar Association Scholarships
Application Deadline: February 16, 2004

The West Suburban Bar Association will award two $1,500 scholarships to law students from the Chicago metro area law schools. Applicants must be entering their second or third year of law school in 2004 and be in good standing. Scholarship awards will be presented at the Association's annual Law Day ceremony in May 2004. Applications and additional information are available in the Office of Admissions. Completed applications should be returned to Nicole Vilches, Assistant Dean for Admissions.

Warner Norcross & Judd LLP Scholarship for Minority Law Students
Application Deadline: April 15, 2004

The law firm of Warner Norcross & Judd LLP has established a fund to provide encouragement and financial assistance to students of racial and ethnic minority heritage pursuing a career in law. One $5,000 scholarship for the 2004-05 academic year will be awarded to a minority student accepted to or presently attending an accredited law school within the United States. Applicants must be former or current residents of Michigan or attend a Michigan law school. All applicants must also have a GPA of 2.5 or above at their college or law school, demonstrate financial need, and provide a statement of goals and aspirations related to their studies in the legal profession. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions.

ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 1, 2004

The mission of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund is to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to ensure that these students have the opportunity to attend law school for three years. The scholarship fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during his/her time in law school. Applicants for the scholarship must be entering, first-year law students in Fall 2004. Students already in law school are not eligible to apply for the award. Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Fund
Application Deadline: April 1, 2004

The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving Berks County, Pennsylvania resident embarking on his or her second year at an accredited law school. The $3,000 award is presented annually at the Berks County Bar Association Law Day event. Applications and additional information are available on the Berks County Community Foundation website at www.bccf.org.

National Federation of the Blind Scholarship Program
Application Deadline: March 31, 2004

The National Federation of the Blind will award thirty scholarships to high-achieving legally blind students. Awards range from $3,000 to $10,000 and recipients will be notified in May. All scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community and financial need. Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Academic Scholarship Program
Application Deadline: March 1, 2004

Educational scholarship funds from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago are available for law students for the 2004-05 academic year.  Scholarships are available for Jewish students legally domiciled in the greater Chicago metropolitan area who are identified as having promise for significant contributions in their chosen careers, and who are in need of financial assistance for full-time academic programs.  Applicants must be born and raised in either Cook County, the Chicago metropolitan area, or Northwest Indiana OR prior to starting professional education, worked full-time for at least 12 months in Cook County or the Chicago metropolitan area. Applicants must also intend to remain in the Chicago metropolitan area after completing school. Jewish Vocational Service, Gertrude and Harry G. Fins Scholarship Fund
Application Deadline: March 1, 2004

The Jewish Vocational Service of Metropolitan Chicago will award scholarships from the Gertrude and Harry G. Fins Scholarship Fund for the 2004-05 academic year. Awards typically range from $1,000 to $5,000. To be eligible, you must: be Jewish; be enrolled full-time at Chicago-Kent or one of the other designated law schools; be domiciled in the Chicago metropolitan community; establish financial need; and demonstrate career promise. All applicants must be available for a personal interview at the JVS offices prior to May 1, 2004.
