Chicago Bar Foundation, Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public
Interest Law Scholarship
Application Deadline: April 1, 2004
Throughout his distinguished life and career, the Honorable
Abraham Lincoln Marovitz was a firm believer that financial
need should not be a bar to dedicated young students who
want to pursue careers in public service. For almost a century,
Judge Marovitz consistently demonstrated his commitment
to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds through a
variety of charitable activities. Prior to his death in
2001, Judge Marovitz insured that this legacy would continue
by establishing funding for a number of charitable initiatives,
highlighted by the new Chicago Bar Foundation Abraham Lincoln
Marovitz Public Interest Law Scholarship.
The Marovitz Scholarship will be awarded annually to a
student attending one of the seven Chicago area law schools
by (DePaul, John Marshall, Chicago-Kent, Loyola, Northwestern,
University of Chicago, and Northern Illinois University).
These funds, payable over a three-year period, will enable
an incoming student who intends to pursue a career
in public interest law to have a significant portion of
his or her tuition and related expenses covered by Scholarship
funding. Contingent on the recipient's continued compliance
with the terms of the Scholarship, the student will receive
$5,000 in the first year of law school, $10,000 in the second
year, and $15,000 in the third year. (The payment schedule
may be modified for part-time students). Additional information

Federal Circuit Bar Association Scholarship
Application Deadline: April 20, 2004
The Federal Circuit Bar Association (“FCBA”) is a national
organization comprised of over 2,500 attorneys interested
in all aspects of the jurisdiction of the United States
Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the appellate
court that hears appeals in all patent cases. Through its
Charitable and Educational Fund, the Association offers
economic assistance to law students having a potential interest
in legal issues that may be appealed to the Federal Circuit.
An award of $10,000, in memory of Giles S. Rich, Circuit
Judge, United States District Court of Appeals for the Federal
Circuit, will be given by the Federal Circuit Bar Association
to a law student showing financial need and demonstrated
academic promise, either in undergraduate studies or in
law school.
Judge Rich was a Circuit Judge on the Court of Appeals
for the Federal Circuit, and its predecessor court, the
Court of Customs and Patent Appeals (“CCPA”) from 1956 to
1999. Before joining the CCPA, he was instrumental in drafting
the major revision of the patent laws of the United States
that were enacted in 1952. At the time of his death, he
was the oldest federal judge serving on active status in
the history of the United States. Besides the length of
his judicial career, he consistently demonstrated a dedication
to the law, the rule of law, and our court system that was
unmatched. In addition to being the recognized “last word”
on patent law, he brought his intellect to every case before
him whether it involved tax law, international trade, government
employment practices, environmental law, governmental contracts,
or intellectual property. A super writer and scholar, he
was also fascinated by technology, a world class photographer,
and a genuinely wonderful human being.
Selection for the award will be based primarily on a written
submission of no more than one page outlining the applicant’s
financial need, any interest in particular areas of the
law, and any qualifications for the award considered relevant
by the applicant. The submission should also include all
of the applicant’s college and law school transcripts, and
a one page curriculum vitae. All of the submitted materials
will be considered, and prior academic performance will
not be the primary criteria for selection. Up to five candidates
may be advanced by Chicago-Kent to the scholarship committee.
Submissions should be submitted to Professor
Dinwoodie, Room 729, by April 20, 2004.
