External Scholarships

Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

Franchise Law Diversity Scholarship Award
Application Deadline: December 15, 2005

The IFA Educational Foundation is now seeking applicants for a new Franchise Law Diversity Scholarship Award.   The award is being sponsored by one of the nation’s leading law firms, DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary and is being administered by the IFA Educational Foundation. The goal of this scholarship program is to recognize and support academic achievement among minority law students and to encourage these students to enroll in courses of study related to franchising. Students must be enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school and have a 2L or 3L status during the period of the scholarship.  Students must be enrolled in at least one course oriented towards franchise law, e.g., Torts, Unfair Trade Practices, Trade Secrets, Antitrust, Trademarks, Contracts, Agency, Securities. Applicants must be a member of a minority group (African American, American Indian, Hispanic American, Asian American, Gay/Lesbian). The award is $4,000 and will be presented annually. Latham & Watkins Diversity Scholars Program
Application Deadline: December 15, 2005

Latham & Watkins will award a $10,000 non-renewable scholarship to each of four second year law students for use during their third year of law school (2006-07). Factors considered in choosing the Latham Diversity Scholars will include a candidate’s ability to contribute to the diversity objectives of global law firms, success in overcoming any obstacles or challenges faced in deciding to choose law as a profession, academic and/or leadership achievements, and desire to practice in a global law firm environment. Jewish Vocational Service of Metropolitan Chicago Scholarship Program
Application Deadline: February 15, 2006

The Jewish Vocational Service of Metropolitan Chicago will award scholarships from the Gertrude and Harry G. Fins Scholarship Fund for the 2006-07 academic year. Awards typically range from $1,000 to $5,000. To be eligible, you must: be Jewish; be enrolled full-time at Chicago-Kent or one of the other designated law schools; be domiciled in the Chicago metropolitan community; establish financial need; and demonstrate career promise. All applicants must be available for a personal interview at the JVS offices prior to May 1, 2006. Nordic Law Club Scholarship
Application Deadline Extended: January 27, 2006

The Nordic Law Club has been a professional and social organization for lawyers for over seventy years. The club will be awarding $1,000 to one student from each of the six area law schools for the 2005-06 academic year. Students interested in this scholarship must be in their final year of law school and have demonstrated an interest in international law issues. The recipient will be based on merit and financial need. Interested students should submit a letter of application to the Office of Admissions, Suite 230. NEW! National Federation of the Blind Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 31, 2006

The National Federation of the Blind has the largest scholarship program for legally blind post-secondary students in the country. The Federation grants thirty scholarships annually to legally blind persons in higher education from college freshmen to doctoral candidates. The scholarships range in value from $3,000 to $12,000, and generous donors like the internationally famous scientist and thinker Dr. Ray Kurzweil often enhance these values with additional gifts. Federation scholarship winners also win a trip to the organization's annual convention and the opportunity to develop mentoring relationships with the nation's most dynamic leaders of the blind community. The annual filing deadline is March 31, and all scholarships are granted in July of each year. NEW! ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 1, 2006

The mission of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund is to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to ensure that these students have the opportunity to attend law school for three years. The scholarship fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during his/her time in law school. Applicants for the scholarship must be entering, first-year law students in Fall 2006. Students already in law school are not eligible to apply for the award. NEW! Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF) Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 4, 2006

PRLDF is accepting applications for the Puerto Rican Bar Association (PRBA) Scholarship Award ($2,000). The PRBA selects recipients based on financial need and academic promise. Scholarship recipients will be contacted by PRBA directly. Applicants must be first or second year students in a JD degree program at an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school. Third year evening students are also eligible. Students working toward their LL.M. are not eligible. Applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.

 

Chicago-Kent Scholarship Opportunities

The Marvin Gates Memorial Scholarship Fund
Application Deadline Extended: December 9, 2005

This fund was established in 1996 by Paula Gates, Class of '96, in honor of her father. The scholarship was established to provide funds for books and supplies to a third-year law student demonstrating financial need and a commitment to social justice. Preference is given to students of Jewish faith. The scholarship amount is $200. Applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions.

Alumni Board of Directors Scholarship
Application Deadline Extended: Thursday, December 15, 2005

The Law School Association Board of Directors Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the Board in 1998 to provide scholarship assistance to law students demonstrating academic merit and financial need. For Spring 2006, the Board plans to make awards of at least $1,000 each. Applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions.

The Larkowski Scholarship Fund
Application Deadline Extended: Friday December 9, 2005

The Frances J. Larkowski Scholarship was established in 1999 with a contribution from the Rosenstiel Foundation. Additional Funds were raised by Polska Wola, the Chicago-Kent Polish American Law Student Organization. The scholarship is awarded to a student with financial need who demonstrates leadership qualities and an interest in supporting the Polish American Community. Preference is given for a student of Polish descent. The scholarship award is for the amount is $1,000. Applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions
