External Scholarships

Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

You may also find information on other outside scholarship awards on the Internet. The following sites are useful for finding scholarship and financial aid information:

Jewish Vocational Service of Metropolitan Chicago Scholarship Program
Application Deadline: February 15, 2006

The Jewish Vocational Service of Metropolitan Chicago will award scholarships from the Gertrude and Harry G. Fins Scholarship Fund for the 2006-07 academic year. Awards typically range from $1,000 to $5,000. To be eligible, you must: be Jewish; be enrolled full-time at Chicago-Kent or one of the other designated law schools; be domiciled in the Chicago metropolitan community; establish financial need; and demonstrate career promise. All applicants must be available for a personal interview at the JVS offices prior to May 1, 2006. Applications are available on the Jewish Vocational Service website at www.jvschicago.org (click on "Scholarship Services"), or by contacting the JVS at (312) 673-3457 or by e-mail at jvsscholarship@jvschicago.org.

National Federation of the Blind Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 31, 2006

The National Federation of the Blind has the largest scholarship program for legally blind post-secondary students in the country. The Federation grants thirty scholarships annually to legally blind persons in higher education from college freshmen to doctoral candidates. The scholarships range in value from $3,000 to $12,000, and generous donors like the internationally famous scientist and thinker Dr. Ray Kurzweil often enhance these values with additional gifts. Federation scholarship winners also win a trip to the organization's annual convention and the opportunity to develop mentoring relationships with the nation's most dynamic leaders of the blind community. The annual filing deadline is March 31, and all scholarships are granted in July of each year. ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 1, 2006

The mission of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund is to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to ensure that these students have the opportunity to attend law school for three years. The scholarship fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during his/her time in law school. Applicants for the scholarship must be entering, first-year law students in Fall 2006. Students already in law school are not eligible to apply for the award. Applications are available online at www.abanet.org/fje or in the Office of Admissions.

Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF) Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 4, 2006

PRLDF is accepting applications for the Puerto Rican Bar Association (PRBA) Scholarship Award ($2,000). The PRBA selects recipients based on financial need and academic promise. Scholarship recipients will be contacted by PRBA directly. Applicants must be first or second year students in a JD degree program at an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school. Third year evening students are also eligible. Students working toward their LL.M. are not eligible. Applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.

The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Award
Application Deadline: April 1, 2006

In 1978, the Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Fund was established by Helen and Richard Fox and Friends to honor the memory of their son who, as a proud member of the Berks County Bar Association, served as a young attorney in the Public Defender’s Office. The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Award of $3,000 is presented annually at the Berks County Bar Association Law Day Event. It is given to help fund a deserving Berks County, Pennsylvania resident embarking on his or her second year at an accredited law school. Eligible students should go to www.bccf.org/scholarships/fox.htm for an application. Completed applications must be returned to Berks County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 212, Reading, PA, 19603-0212 by April 1st.

Sydney B. Williams, Jr. Scholarship
Application Deadline: February 24, 2006

The American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation awards scholarships to students from minority groups that are presently under-represented among intellectual property attorneys. In the last three years, the Foundation has awarded $370,000 to assist minority law students studying intellectual property law. The students chosen to receive the Sidney B. Williams, Jr. scholarship have the opportunity to receive $10,000 a year for 3 years. For more information or to obtain an application, click here or stop by the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.

Black Women Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago, Inc. Scholarship Essay Contest
Application Deadline: February 17, 2006

The Black Women Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago, Inc. (BWLA)'s Spring 2006 Scholarship Essay Contest is now open to all Illinois law students. Scholarship essay entry rules can be obtained in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230, or online at www.bwla.org.

Returning to Learning Scholarships
Application Deadline: April 1, 2006

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) promotes equity for women and girls, life-long education, and positive societal change. The Lombard Area Branch of AAUW is offering one "Returning to Learning" Scholarship to a woman to assist in completing a graduate degree. The woman must be a resident of Lombard, Villa Park, Oakbrook Terrace, or Glendale Heights, who has been out of school for at least 2 - 3 years. Law school students applying for this scholarship can not have obtained a master's degree previously. Peoria County Bar Association - Diversity Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 17, 2006

The goal of the Peoria County Bar Association is to diversify its membership by providing financial assistance to racial and ethnic minority law students who have an intent to practice law in the Peoria area following graduation from law school. For the 2006-07 academic year, the (PCBA) will issue a $1,000 scholarship to a 2L. Additional information and an application can be picked up in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.

Chicago-Kent Scholarship Opportunities

Roddy Scholarship
Application Deadline: February 17, 2006

Joseph V. Roddy, a 1962 Chicago-Kent Graduate, established this fund to provide financial assistance to evening division students currently working in law enforcement. Qualified applicants should submit a letter of interest to the Office of Admissions, Suite 230, Attn: Julie Rosenberg, describing their current work in law enforcement and how this award would help to alleviate their financial need. Applicants should also attach a current resume. The award amount is $2,300, and it is for the Spring 2006 semester.
