External Scholarships

Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

NEW! Bohemian Lawyers' Association of Chicago Annual Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 31, 2006

All persons of Czech, Moravian, Ruthenian, Silesian or Slovak ancestry enrolled in an accredited law school in the greater Chicagoland area are eligible for a Bohemian Lawyers' Association of Chicago (BLAC) annual scholarship. Scholarships in the amount of $1,500, payable to the recipient's law school are presented at the BLAC Annual Installation Dinner. Applications must be postmarked on or before March 31, 2006. NEW! Korean American Bar Association of Chicago ("KABA") Scholarship Application Deadline: April 1, 2006

Every year, KABA with the generous support of Baker & McKenzie, awards a scholarship of $500. This scholarship is open to all law students. The winner will be announced at the KABA Annual Dinner on April 26, 2006.  The winner must be present at the KABA Annual Dinner to receive the scholarship. To apply for the scholarship, law students must provide a resume, unofficial law school transcript, and a brief statement (1 page maximum) explaining why they are applying for the scholarship to David B. Kahng, Assistant Counsel, Morgan Stanley, 2500 Lake Cook Road, Riverwoods, IL 60015. NEW! Black Women Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago, Inc. (BWLA) Scholarship Application Deadline: March 17, 2006

The Black Women Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago, Inc. is committed to providing scholarship money to deserving students - this is not a need-based scholarship so all students are encouraged to apply. The grand prize scholarship will be no less than $1,000. Entries must be mailed or delivered to BWLA Scholarship Comittee, 321 S. Plymouth Court, Suite 600, Chicago, Illinois 60604 and post-marked or hand-delivered by March 17, 2006. Eligibiilty: Applicants must be enrolled in an Illinois accredited law school, and must be in good academic standing as demonstrated by a letter of good standing from the law school Registrar and an unofficial copy of the law school transcript. A 1,000 word essay is required to apply. For additional information regarding the scholarship contest, please contact BWLA at scholarship@bwla.org. NEW! Alabama Law Foundation, Inc. - Cabaniss, Johnston Scholarship Application Deadline: June 2, 2006

The Cabaniss, Johnston Scholarship is awarded annually to a law student who is a resident of Alabama, is attending an accredited law school in the United States and will be a second year student. The scholarship will cover tuition and books for the second year of law school to a maximum of $5,000. A second place scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded at the committee's discretion. While academic achievement is the key factor in determining eligibility for the scholarship; consideration will be given to other factors such as conscientiousness, dependability, civic involvement, financial need and dedication to the highest ethical standards. NEW! The Chicago Bar Foundation 2006 Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Scholarship Application Deadline: April 15, 2006

The CBF Marovitz Scholarship is intended to support a needy law student who is deeply committed to public interest work so that upon graduation financial need will not prevent the student from pursuing a public interest legal career. The scholarship provides funds for needy public interest-minded students so they may complete law school with as little debt as possible. The CBF will award the scholarship annually to one student attending a Chicago area law school. Funds, payable over a three-year period, will enable an incoming student who intends to pursue a career in public interest law to have a significant portion of his or her tuition and related expenses covered by sholarship funding. Contingent upon the recipient's continued compliance with the terms of the scholarship, the student will receive $5,000 in the first year of law school, $10,000 in the second year, and $15,000 in the third year (the payment schedule may be modified for part-time students). NEW! The Chicago Lighthouse for People who are Blind or Visually Impaired, The Cara Dunne Yates Scholarship Application Deadline: May 1, 2006

The Chicago Lighthouse, through The Panitch Scholarship Program, awards scholarships in eight categories, including students pursuing a law degree. The Cara Dunne Yates Scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a graduate or advanced degree with special consideration given to students seeking a law degree. Interested applicants should write a one-page essay about their background and educational/career goals and how this scholarship will help to achieve these goals. An eye report or statement from your doctor proving your visual impairment is required. Also, include a letter from your school stating proof of enrollment. Personal references are helpful, but not required. Submit material to The Chicago Lighthouse, Scholarship Program Coordinator, 1850 W. NEW! Northwest Suburban Bar Association Foundation, The Timothy C. Evans Scholarship Application Deadline: April 11, 2006

The Northwest Suburban Bar Association Foundation was established by the NWSBA and awards eligible students who reside in the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, and who have expressed a commitment to the highest scholastic standards. Some factors to be considered are scholastic achievement, involvement in school activities, and extra curricular activities, as well as, financial need. The Timothy C. Evans Scholarship was established to honor the commitment and dedication that the Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County has devoted to the Northwest Suburban Bar Association and to the community of Cook County. Currently enrolled law students need to complete the application and additional requirements, including cover letter and law school transcript. NEW! Dupage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers, 2006 Scholarship Application Deadline: April 30, 2006

The Dupage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers will award a scholarship to students of Italian extraction who have completed at least one semester of law school and are currently enrolled in law school. Generally, two scholarships are awarded ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. Applications and letters of recommendation are required to apply. Additional information and an application can be picked up in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.

NEW! Knights of Dabrowski Crusade for Education, Financial Aid Program Application Deadline: May 31, 2006

Students of Polish descent in need of financial aid may apply to the Knights of Dabrowski Crusade for Education program. A limited number of scholarships are available on the basis of documented financial need, academic performance and community involvement. Basic eligibility requirements are: full-time enrollment in fully accredited college/university; U.S. citizenship or documented legal alien of Polish heritage; good academic standing and documented financial need; and Chicago area residency for at least four years. NEW! Polish Women's Civic Club, Inc., Financial Scholarships Application Deadline: July 1, 2006

The Polish Women's Civic Club, Inc. supports the educational activities of Polish American students, male and female, through financial scholarships. To qualify for consideration, a student must meet the following criteria: U.S. citizenship; Polish heritage by at least one parent; Chicago area residency; full-time student; exhibit financial need and good academic standing. To request an application, enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope to: Eunice Warda, Education Committee Chairman, Polish Women's Civic Club, PO Box 684, Lake Villa, IL 60046.

NEW! DuPage County Bar Foundation, Hartman E. Stime Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 24, 2006

The DuPage County Bar Association will award a $2,000 scholarship to a DuPage County resident who will commence their second year of law school in Fall 2006. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of prior academic achievement and economic need. Applications are available online at www.dcba.org/public/found.htm. The scholarship selection committee will interview applicants at their Wheaton office on April 8, 2006. The recipient will be recognized at the annual Law Day Luncheon on April 27, 2006.

National Federation of the Blind Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 31, 2006

The National Federation of the Blind has the largest scholarship program for legally blind post-secondary students in the country. The Federation grants thirty scholarships annually to legally blind persons in higher education from college freshmen to doctoral candidates. The scholarships range in value from $3,000 to $12,000, and generous donors like the internationally famous scientist and thinker Dr. Ray Kurzweil often enhance these values with additional gifts. Federation scholarship winners also win a trip to the organization's annual convention and the opportunity to develop mentoring relationships with the nation's most dynamic leaders of the blind community. The annual filing deadline is March 31, and all scholarships are granted in July of each year. The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Award
Application Deadline: April 1, 2006

In 1978, the Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Fund was established by Helen and Richard Fox and Friends to honor the memory of their son who, as a proud member of the Berks County Bar Association, served as a young attorney in the Public Defender’s Office. The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Award of $3,000 is presented annually at the Berks County Bar Association Law Day Event. It is given to help fund a deserving Berks County, Pennsylvania resident embarking on his or her second year at an accredited law school. Eligible students should go to www.bccf.org/scholarships/fox.htm for an application. Completed applications must be returned to Berks County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 212, Reading, PA, 19603-0212 by April 1st.

Returning to Learning Scholarships
Application Deadline: April 1, 2006

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) promotes equity for women and girls, life-long education, and positive societal change. The Lombard Area Branch of AAUW is offering one "Returning to Learning" Scholarship to a woman to assist in completing a graduate degree. The woman must be a resident of Lombard, Villa Park, Oakbrook Terrace, or Glendale Heights, who has been out of school for at least 2 - 3 years. Law school students applying for this scholarship can not have obtained a master's degree previously. Peoria County Bar Association - Diversity Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 17, 2006

The goal of the Peoria County Bar Association is to diversify its membership by providing financial assistance to racial and ethnic minority law students who have an intent to practice law in the Peoria area following graduation from law school. For the 2006-07 academic year, the (PCBA) will issue a $1,000 scholarship to a 2L. Additional information and an application can be picked up in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.
