External Scholarships

Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

NEW! Hellenic Bar Association Scholarship

Applicaiton Deadline: October 6, 2006 (Deadline Extended)

The Hellenic Bar Association is pleased to announce the Hellenic Bar Association Scholarship. Each year, the Hellenic Bar Association awards scholarships to deserving second and third-year students. In selecting applicants, the association considers the following three factors: scholarship; need; and service to community. All scholarship applicants attending law school in Chicago must be available for an in-person interview. Applications are available in the office of admissions, suite 230.

NEW! Puerto Rican Bar Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 13, 2006

The Puerto Rican Bar Foundation announces their annual scholarship. To be eligible to apply, applicants must submit an application and official law school transcript by the application deadline. After an interview process, scholarship recipients will be asked to attend the Puerto Rican Bar Charitable Foundation banquet on November 9, 2006. Please note: students who have previously received a scholarship from this program are ineligible to apply. NEW! IPO Corporate Intern Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 13, 2006

The Intellectual Property Owners' Association is accepting applications for the IPO Donald Banner Corporate Intern Scholarship. The IPO Foundation awards two $10,000 scholarships to outstanding law students who have completed internships in a corporate intellectual property law department. NEW! Black Women Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago Fall Book Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 17, 2006

The purpose of the Black Women Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago, Inc. (BWLA) is to encourage African-American women in the law through support in their legal education and profession. The purpose of the BWLA Fall Book Scholarship is to meet a portion of the financial need of law students in good standing at an accredited Illinois law school. To apply, applicants must: be in good standing at an accredited law school in Illinois (evidenced by an official transcript); have un-met financial needs; and demonstrate a commitment to public service (evidenced by current participation in community service or outreach). Applications must be postmarked by October 17, 2006. Interested students can pick up an application in the Office of Admissions, suite 230.

NEW! Dupage Association of Women Lawyers Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 31, 2006

The DuPage Association of Women Lawyers Foundation is once again offering the Judge Helen C. Kinney Scholarship in honor of the memory, vision, and leadership of Judge Helen C. Kinney, the first woman appointed to the bench in DuPage County. Any second or third-year woman law student, with a DuPage County connection, who is enrolled in an accredited law school in Illinois, is eligible to apply. The Foundation anticipates awarding two scholarships of $1,000 (or more) to deserving women law students. The deadline for submission of the application is October 31, 2006. The application is available online at www.dupagewomenlawyers.org.

South Surburban Bar Association Scholarship

Application Deadline: September 29, 2006

The South Surburban Bar Association has a scholarship for eligible students in the amount of $1,500. To apply, a candidate must be a deserving student attending an accredited local law school; be a resident of the South Suburbs of Cook County and must have a present interest to practice law in the South Suburbs upon graduation; and have documented financial need. Students interested in being considered for the scholarship award must submit a brief resume for review by the South Surburban Bar Association Committee. They must also include a cover letter (200 word maximum) indicating why they want to practice on the Southside. The Committee may conduct interviews of applicants or alternatively, may in its discretion, recommend a candidate to the Board of South Surburban Bar Association based upon a review of the resumes submitted. Interested students may forward their resume and cover letter demonstrating connection and desire to practice on the Southside directly to Roger S. Hutchison, Attorney at Law, 47 West Polk Street, Suite M-2, Chicago, Illinois 60605. In order to be eligible for consideration, candidate resumes must be received by September 29, 2006.

Illinois Bar Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: September 29, 2006

The Illinois Bar Foundation will award a $3,000 scholarship to a 2nd or 3rd year law student attending Chicago-Kent. The Foundation seeks to award the scholarship to a 2nd or 3rd year student who has a grade point average of 2.5 or higher (or its equivalent), is involved in diverse extracurricular & community activities and has financial need. The scholarship will favor students who have an intention of practicing law in Illinois. Membership in the Illinois State Bar Association is encouraged by not required. To apply, students can pick up an application form in the office of admissions, suite 230. Please note, applications must be returned to the office of admissions for forwarding to the foundation.

McDermott Minority Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 6, 2006

McDermott Will & Emery has been committed to improving diversity at their law firm and in the legal industry generally for several years. McDermott is proud to have the 5th highest number of minority partners amoung U.S. law firms as ranked in the March 2006 Minority Law Journal. To further their efforts to recruit more racial and ethnic minority lawyers, McDermott is pleased to announce the McDermott Minority Scholarship. McDermott will award a $15,000 scholarship and a position in a McDermott Summer Program to two second-year minority law students from ABA-accredited law schools. Students who meet McDermott's hiring criteria and demonstrate leadership, community involvement, and a commitment to improving diversity in the legal community should consider applying. All interested students must submit an online application, resume, transcript, and 1-2 page essay. The essay should include ideas the applicant has for how the number of minority students in law schools can be increased and how the applicant has improved and intends to continue to help improve diversity in the legal profession throughout his/her law school and legal career. To apply, students can pick up an application form in the office of admissions, suite 230.

If you have been awarded a Chicago-Kent scholarship for the 2006-07 academic year, please refer to the Scholarship Policies from the current Student Handbook for important information concerning your award.  Please direct any questions about your scholarship to the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.
