External Scholarships

Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

NEW! Alumni Board of Directors Scholarship

Application Deadline: February 15, 2007


The Alumni Board of Directors (formerly known as The Law School Association Board of Directors) Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the Board in 1998 to provide scholarship assistance to law students demonstrating academic merit and financial need. For Spring 2007, the Board plans to make several awards of at least $1,000 each. Applications for the Alumni Board of Directors Scholarship are available online or in the Office of Admissions. Students interested must submit applications to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by February 15, 2007.

NEW! Asian Law Student Scholarship

Application Deadline: February 15, 2007

The Asian American Law Scholarship was established by alumni and friends of Chicago-Kent, including the Chinese American Bar Association, to provide financial assistance to students of Asian descent. Students, alumni, and friends celebrated the inception of this scholarship fund at a Chinese New Year reception in February 1997. In awarding the scholarship, the law school gives preference to students planning to serve the Asian community. Selection is based upon demonstrated commitment to serving needs of the Asian American community (most important factor) through pro bono and/or public interest work; good standing at his or her law school; financial need; and leadership potential. The scholarship amount is $1,000. Applicants must submit an essay desciribing their commitment to serving the Asian American community and addressing the other criteria for the award, and submit letters of recommendation by persons who can be contacted by the Chinese American Bar Association. The recipient is selected by the Chinese American Bar Association. All application material should be submitted to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by February 15, 2007.

NEW! Gates Memorial Scholarship Fund

Application Deadline: February 15, 2007

The Marvin Gates Memorial Fund provides funds for books and supplies for a financially needy third-year student. Preference is given to students of Jewish faith and to students with demonstrated financial need and a commitment to social justice. The fund was established by Paula Gates, ‘96, in honor of her father, Marvin Gates. Mr. Gates was a professional engineer who valued education and who understood the needs of his community and those of the third world countries where he spent time during his career. The scholarship amount is $200. Gates scholarship applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions. Students interested in the scholarship must submit the application to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by February 15, 2007.

NEW! The Larkowski Scholarship Fund

Application Deadline: February 15, 2007

The Frances J. Larkowski Scholarship was established in 1999 with a contribution from the Rosenstiel Foundation. Additional Funds were raised by Polska Wola, the Chicago-Kent Polish American Law Student Organization. The scholarship is awarded to a student with financial need who demonstrates leadership qualities and an interest in supporting the Polish American Community. Preference is given for a a student of Polish descent. The scholarship award is for the amount is $1,000. Larkowski Scholarship Fund applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions. Students interested must submit the application to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by February 15, 2007.

NEW! Nordic Law Club Scholarship

Application Deadline: February 15, 2007

The Nordic Law Club of Chicago has been a professional and social organization for lawyers for over 70 years. The club annually awards a $1,000 scholarship to one student from each of the six area Chicago law schools. The criteria for consideration include financial need and a demonstrated interest in international law issues. Interested students should submit a letter of application to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by February 15, 2007.

 

NEW! The Roddy Scholarship Fund

Application Deadline: February 15, 2007

Joseph V. Roddy, a 1962 Chicago-Kent graduate, established this fund to provide financial assistance to evening division students currently working in law enforcement. Preference for this scholarhip is given to first year students and the award amount varies depending upon the number of scholarships awarded. To apply, applicants should forward a letter of interest and current resume to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by February 15, 2007.

 

NEW! The Honorable Dean J. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship Fund

Application Deadline: February 15, 2007


The Honorable Dean J. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship fund was established in 1991 by the Class of 1967, family, faculty, colleagues and friends in memory of Dean Sodaro, '53, to provide assistance based on need. The scholarship amount is $1,000. Sodaro Scholarship Fund applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions. Students interested must submit applications to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by February 15, 2007

NEW! ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 1, 2007

The mission of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund is to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to ensure that these students have the opportunity to attend law school for three years. The scholarship fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during his/her time in law school. Applicants for the scholarship must be entering, first-year law students in Fall 2007. Students already in law school are not eligible to apply for the award. NEW! National Federation of the Blind

Application Deadline: March 31, 2007

The National Federation of the Blind has a large and prestigious scholarship program whose awards are made solely to persons who are legally blind. The Federation's program will award thirty scholarships to high-achievng legally blind students in summer 2007. Scholarships range from $3,000 to $12,000. NEW! Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship/Berks County Bar Association

Application Deadline: April 1, 2007

The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Award of $3,000 is presented annually by the Berks County Bar Association, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The scholarship is given to help fund a deserving Berks County, Pennsylvania, resident embarking on his/her second year at an ABA accredited law school. Eligible law students should visit the Berks County Bar Association website at www.bccf.org for an online scholarship application to be submited by April 1, 2007.

NEW! Illinois Government Bar Association Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 1, 2007

The Illinois Bar Association is offering a $500 scholarship to a first, second or third year student interested in a career in public service. To apply, applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school; planning a career in Illinois government, at thelocal, state or federal level; and provide proof of a pending job or internship in Illinois - paid or unpaid - in the public sector. NEW! The Sovereignty Symposium Scholarship Program

Application Deadline: May 5 , 2007

The Oklahoma Supreme Court, in cooperation with the Oklahoma Indian Affairs Commission, the Sovereignty Symposium Inc., and the Oklahoma Arts Council will host Sovereignty Symposiumm XX, May 30 - 31, 2007, at Oklahoma City's Skirvin Hilton Hotel. As part of the Symposium, the Court offers several types of scholarships ranging from $200 cash prizes for winners of the writing competition to full-tuition scholarships. To apply, applicants must demonstrate an interest in and dedication to Native American law issues and the need for a scholarship in a letter of application. NEW! Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program

Application Deadline: June 1, 2007

The Minority Corporate Counsel Association is pleased to announce the continuation of an initiative designed to support entering first year law students nationwide who have been accepted into an accredited law school. The program is open to all students entering law school in fall 2007. The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) was founded in 197 to advocate for the expanded hiring, retention, and promotion of minority attorneys in corporate law departments and the law firms that serve them. MCCA accomplishes its mission through the collection and dissemination of information about diversity in the legal profession. MCCA will award 10 fellowships at $10,000 per year for each of three years in law school. The total commitment per student fellow will be $30,000. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is June 1, 2007. 2007 Roscoe Pound Institute Awards for Law Students

Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest

The topic for this year's essay contest is "Whose Earth is it Anyway? How Far can Environmental Protections Extend under the current 5th Amendment Takings Doctrine?" Elaine Osborne Jacobson Award for Women in Health Care Law

Nomination Deadline: March 9, 2007

This national award is given annually to a woman law student with demonstrated interest in health care law. Candidates must be nominated by a law school dean or professor. For nomination, the candidate shall be a woman currently enrolled in an accredited North American law school on a full- or part-time basis who through her law school academic and clinical work and other related activities demonstrates her aptitude for and a long-term commitment to a legal career of advocacy on behalf of the health care needs of children, women, the elderly or the disabled. The award recipient will receive a $3,000 cash award. Franchise Law Diversity Scholarship Award

Application Deadline: Feburary 1, 2007

The IFA Educational Foundation is now seeking applicants for a new Franchise Law Diversity Scholarship Award. The award is being sponsored by one of the nation's leading law firms, DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary and is being administered by the IFA Educational Foundation. The goal of this scholarship program is to recognize and support academic achievement among minority law students and to encourage these students to enroll in courses of study related to franchising. The award is $4,000 and will be presented annually. The award will be issued to the law school in which the student is enrolled for tuition only. The scholarship may not be used by the selected student's law school to reduce the amount of financial aid being received by the student. In addition to the scholarship, the selected student may be invited to various functions, such as the IFA Annual Legal Symposium or other meetings, sponsored by DLA Piper US LLP. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school at 2L or 3L status, be enrolled in at least one course oriented towards franchise law, and be a member of a minority group. The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Academic Scholarship

Application Deadline: February 15, 2007

Educational scholarship funds from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago are available for the 2007-08 academic year. Approximately $500,000 is available for Jewish students who are identified as having promise for significant contributions in their chosen careers, and are in need of financial assistance for full-time academic programs. To be eligible, students must be actively enrolled full-time in a graduate or law program and have legal domicility in the greater Chicago metropolitan area, or in some cases Cook County or Northwest Indiana. Refugees or asylees are encouraged to apply, as citizenship is not a prerequisite. The Jewish Vocational Service administers the scholarship program and personally interviews all applicants before April 20, 2007. To apply, go to www.jvschicago.org and click on Scholarship Services.
