External Scholarships

Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

NEW! Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 3, 2007

The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF) is pleased to announce the 2006-07 Puerto Rican Bar Association (PRBA) Scholarship Program for Latino law students. The PRBA, founded in New York in 1957 is one of the oldest Latino bar associations in the United States. Today the PRBA continues its tradition of breaking down barriers to the legal profession with active members throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. All Latino students attending law school in the United States (including Puerto Rico) are eligible to apply. PRBA selects recipients based on financial need and academic promise. Scholarship recipients will be contacted directly by the PRBA. All applicants must be a first or second year student (or third year evening student) in a JD degree program at an ABA-approved law school. The average award is $2,000. Applications must be postmarked by March 3, 2007 and forwarded directly to the PRLDEF New York office. Interested students can pick up an application form in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.

NEW! Northwest Suburban Bar Association Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 19, 2007

The Northwest Suburban Bar Association Foundation is pleased to announce the "Honorable Timothy C. Evans Scholarship". The scholarship was established to honor the commitment and dedication that the Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Timothy C. Evans, has devoted to the Northwest Suburban Bar Association (NWSBA) and to the community of Cook County. This scholarship is offered to currently enrolled law school students who reside in the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division (this includes Lake, Kane, DuPage, Cook, Will, Kendall, Grundy and LaSalle Counties). Scholarship awards range from $500 - $2500. Applications can be downloaded directly from the NWSBA website at http://www.nwsba.org/scholarship.html. NEW! DuPage County Bar Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 23, 2007

The DuPage County Bar Foundation is accepting applications for its annual Hartman Stime Scholarship. This $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a DuPage County resident who will begin his or her second year of law school in Fall 2007. The scholarship will be awarded based on the basis of prior academic achievement and economic need. The application is available at http://www.dcba.org/public/found.htm. The selection committee will interview applicants at the Wheaton office on April 7, 2007. The recipient will be recognized at the foundation's annual Law Day Luncheon, which will tkae place on May 1, 2007. For more details, contact the foundation at 630.653.7779.

ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 1, 2007

The mission of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund is to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to ensure that these students have the opportunity to attend law school for three years. The scholarship fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during his/her time in law school. Applicants for the scholarship must be entering, first-year law students in Fall 2007. Students already in law school are not eligible to apply for the award. Elaine Osborne Jacobson Award for Women in Health Care Law

Nomination Deadline: March 9, 2007

This national award is given annually to a woman law student with demonstrated interest in health care law. Candidates must be nominated by a law school dean or professor. For nomination, the candidate shall be a woman currently enrolled in an accredited North American law school on a full- or part-time basis who through her law school academic and clinical work and other related activities demonstrates her aptitude for and a long-term commitment to a legal career of advocacy on behalf of the health care needs of children, women, the elderly or the disabled. The award recipient will receive a $3,000 cash award. 2007 Roscoe Pound Institute Awards for Law Students and Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest

Intent Form Deadline: January 31, 2007 Essay Deadline: March 30, 2007

The topic for this year's essay contest is "Whose Earth is it Anyway? How Far can Environmental Protections Extend under the current 5th Amendment Takings Doctrine?" The essay prize is a $5,000 cash award. For Rules and Intent-to-Enter form, please visit the Pound Institute website at www.poundinstitute.org.

National Federation of the Blind

Application Deadline: March 31, 2007

The National Federation of the Blind has a large and prestigious scholarship program whose awards are made solely to persons who are legally blind. The Federation's program will award thirty scholarships to high-achievng legally blind students in summer 2007. Scholarships range from $3,000 to $12,000. Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship/Berks County Bar Association

Application Deadline: April 1, 2007

The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Award of $3,000 is presented annually by the Berks County Bar Association, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The scholarship is given to help fund a deserving Berks County, Pennsylvania, resident embarking on his/her second year at an ABA accredited law school. Eligible law students should visit the Berks County Bar Association website at www.bccf.org for an online scholarship application to be submited by April 1, 2007.

Illinois Government Bar Association Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 1, 2007

The Illinois Bar Association is offering a $500 scholarship to a first, second or third year student interested in a career in public service. To apply, applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school; planning a career in Illinois government, at thelocal, state or federal level; and provide proof of a pending job or internship in Illinois - paid or unpaid - in the public sector. For details, entry rules are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.

The Sovereignty Symposium Scholarship Program

Application Deadline: May 5 , 2007

The Oklahoma Supreme Court, in cooperation with the Oklahoma Indian Affairs Commission, the Sovereignty Symposium Inc., and the Oklahoma Arts Council will host Sovereignty Symposiumm XX, May 30 - 31, 2007, at Oklahoma City's Skirvin Hilton Hotel. As part of the Symposium, the Court offers several types of scholarships ranging from $200 cash prizes for winners of the writing competition to full-tuition scholarships. To apply, applicants must demonstrate an interest in and dedication to Native American law issues and the need for a scholarship in a letter of application. Applications must be submitted by mail to Justice Yvonne Kauger, The Sovereignty Symposium, Attn: Ed Edmondson Scholarship Committee, Oklahoma State Capitol, Room 242, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73105.

Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program

Application Deadline: June 1, 2007

The Minority Corporate Counsel Association is pleased to announce the continuation of an initiative designed to support entering first year law students nationwide who have been accepted into an accredited law school. The program is open to all students entering law school in fall 2007. The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) was founded in 197 to advocate for the expanded hiring, retention, and promotion of minority attorneys in corporate law departments and the law firms that serve them. MCCA accomplishes its mission through the collection and dissemination of information about diversity in the legal profession. MCCA will award 10 fellowships at $10,000 per year for each of three years in law school. The total commitment per student fellow will be $30,000. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is June 1, 2007. Application information is available at www.mcca.com and the application process is administered for MCCA by UNCF and students may apply online at www.uncf.org.
