External Scholarships

Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

NEW! Alabama Law Foundation,Cabaniss, Johnston Scholarship

Application Deadline: June 1 , 2007

The Cabaniss, Johnston Scholarship is awarded annually to a law student who is a resident of Alabama, is attending an accredited law school in the U.S. and will be a second year student. The scholarship will cover tuition and books for the second year of law school to a maximum of $5,000. A second place scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded at the committee's discretion. While academic achievement is the key factor in determining eligibility for the scholarship; consideration will be given to other factors such as conscientiousness, dependability, civic involvement, financial need and dedication to the highest ethical standards. The application can be completed online or downloaded in PDF format at the Alabama Law Foundation website, www.alfinc.org. The deadline for submitting applications for the 2007-08 school year is June 1, 2007.

NEW! The Minority Corporate Counsel Association Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program

Application Deadline: June 1 , 2007

The United Negro College Fund and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association are pleased to announce the continuation of an initiative designed to support entering first year law students nationwide who have been accepted into an accredited law school. The scholarship program will provide 10 scholarships at $10,000 per year for up to three years. The total commitment per student is $30,000. Three runner-ups will also receive a one-time gift of $10,000 for their participation. Applicants must: be a U.S. citizen and able to show proof of same; demonstrate high academic achievement during his/her undergraduate work; show proof of his/her acceptance into a U.S. accredited law school on or before the application deadline; demostrate community service and leadership qualities; have an interest in corporate law, including working in a corporate law department and/or law firm; have an interest in diversity; and be financially disadvantaged. Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 30, 2007

The Federal Circuit Bar Association announces its annual award in memory of Giles S. Rich, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The Association awards a $10,000 award to a law student showing financial need and demonstrated academic promise, either in undergradaute studies or in law school. Selection of the award will be based primarily on a one-page written submission stating the applicant's financial need, any interests in particular areas of the law, and any qualifications for the award considered relevant by the applicant. The submission should also include all of the applicant's college and law school transcripts, and a one page curriculum vitae. All of the submitted materials will be considered, and prior academic performance will not be the primary criteria for selection. All material should be sent to: Stephen L. Crusade for Education Financial Aid Program

Application Deadline: April 30, 2007

Students of Polish descent in need of financial aid may apply to the Knights of Dabrowski Crusade for Education program for help. A limited number of scholarships are available on the basis of documented financial need, academic performance and community involvement. Students are eligible to apply who meet the following requirements: full-time student enrolled in law school at a fully accredited college/university in the U.S.; U.S. citizen or documented legal alien of Polish descent; good academic standing and documented financial need; resident of Chicago metropolitan area for at least four years (proof of residency required); and recipient must be able to attend a scheduled interview in late spring and Award Presentation Ceremony in the fall of 2007. Kane County Bar Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: May 1 , 2007

Through the generosity of the Kane County Bar Association members, the Kane County Bar Foundation has been able to award multiple scholarships. The Foundation awards at least two scholarships annually of $1,000 each to deserving Kane County resident law students. Essex County Bar Association Scholarship

Application Deadline: May 11 , 2007

The Essex County Bar Association (ECBA) and its Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, in conjunction with the Honorable Vincent J. Biunno Memorial Fund is pleased to announce the continuation of the Biunno Scholarship Program for the 2007-08 school year. The scholarships are designed to offer financial assistance to persons with a disability who are currently attending law school. For purposes of this scholarship, a disability is limited to a permanent physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of the individual having such an impairment. Persons wishing to apply for the scholarship should know that apart from the requirement that they demonstrate a permanent disability consistent with the criterion outlined above, no other single criterion will be dispositive to selection of this award. A variety of other factors, including financial need, law school achievement and commitment to the practice of law will enter into the decision making process. Dupage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers Scholarship

Application Deadline: May 11 , 2007

The Dupage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers will, once again, be awarding a scholarship to students of Italian extraction who have completed at least one semester of law school and are currently enrolled in law school. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000 and will be awarded in mid-May 2007. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.

Illinois Judicial Council Foundation Scholarships

Application Deadline: May 31 , 2007

The Illinois Judicial Council Foundation announces its 2007 Law School Scholarships. To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria: be enrolled full-time in an accredited law school, rank in good standing, submit an official transcript, submit a financial statement, submit a completed scholarship application, submit two letters of recommendation, submit a personal statement and resume, and plan to be available to the scholarship commitee if selected. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.

The Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 15, 2007

The Attorney-CPA Foundation is pleased to announce the annual Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarships. The Foundation will award scholarships in 2007 in amounts ranging from $250 to $1,000 to students who will be entering their third year of law school in the Fall of 2007 and who have obtained a CPA certificate. Since 1998, the Foundation has awarded over 54 scholarships to students at 28 law schools across the country. Applicants will be evaluated based upon their academic performance, leadership in the school and community and need for assistance in completing their studies. Scholarship applications should be postmarked by April 15, 2007. The recipients will be selected by the Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarship committee this July. The Warner Norcross & Judd Minority Scholarship Program

Application Deadline: April 15, 2007

The law firm of Warner, Norcross and Judd has a Minority Scholarship Program which annually awards $5,000 to a law student, $2,000 to a paralegal student and $1,000 to a legal secretarial student. Winners are chosen by the Firm and Grand Rapids Community Foundation. Interested students should visit the firm's website at http://www.wnj.com/careers/diversity/minority_scholarship/ to print an application and submit it by mail to the Grand Rapids Community Foundation (209C Waters Building, 161 Ottawa Avenue, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49503, 616.454.1751). The deadline for applying is April 15, 2007.

The Sovereignty Symposium Scholarship Program

Application Deadline: May 5 , 2007

The Oklahoma Supreme Court, in cooperation with the Oklahoma Indian Affairs Commission, the Sovereignty Symposium Inc., and the Oklahoma Arts Council will host Sovereignty Symposiumm XX, May 30 - 31, 2007, at Oklahoma City's Skirvin Hilton Hotel. As part of the Symposium, the Court offers several types of scholarships ranging from $200 cash prizes for winners of the writing competition to full-tuition scholarships. To apply, applicants must demonstrate an interest in and dedication to Native American law issues and the need for a scholarship in a letter of application. Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program

Application Deadline: June 1, 2007

The Minority Corporate Counsel Association is pleased to announce the continuation of an initiative designed to support entering first year law students nationwide who have been accepted into an accredited law school. The program is open to all students entering law school in fall 2007. The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) was founded in 197 to advocate for the expanded hiring, retention, and promotion of minority attorneys in corporate law departments and the law firms that serve them. MCCA accomplishes its mission through the collection and dissemination of information about diversity in the legal profession. MCCA will award 10 fellowships at $10,000 per year for each of three years in law school. The total commitment per student fellow will be $30,000. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is June 1, 2007. Application information is available at www.mcca.com and the application process is administered for MCCA by UNCF and students may apply online at www.uncf.org.
