External Scholarships

Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

NEW !! The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Scholarship

Application Deadline: February 15, 2009


Educational scholarship funds from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago are available for the 2009-2010 academic year. Approximately $500,000 is available for Jewish students who are identified as having promise for significant contributions in their chosen careers, and are in need of financial assistance for full-time academic programs primarily in the helping professions. To be eligible a student must: be enrolling or enrolled full-time; be domiciled in the Chicago metropolitan community; establish financial need; and demonstrate career promise. The Jewish Vocational Service administers the scholarship program and personally interviews all applicants before April 20, 2009 at one of its many offices throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. NEW !! 2009 Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest

Intent Form Deadline: January 30, 2009

Essay Deadline: March 31, 2009

The Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest is a $5,000 cash award given to the author of the winning essay. The 2009 topic is Pollution Preemption: Federal Preemption of State Tort Law and Environment Protection. Any student currently enrolled in an ABA accredited law school may submit a legal essay for the competition. Essays can only be written during the academic year covered by the competition and may not be prepared as part of paid legal work outside of law school. NEW !! Institute of Management Accountants Scholarships

Application Deadline: February 15 , 2009


The Institute of Management Accountants is pleased to offer scholarships to students pursuing accounting and finance graduate degrees. The Scholarships range from $1000 to $5000 and may include lodging, transportation and registration costs to both the IMA Annual Conference and Exposition and the IMA Student Leadership Conference. The application is available on the IMA web site at www.imanet.org/scholarships and the deadline to apply is February 15, 2009.

 

NEW !! The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund Essay Contest

Application Deadline: June 1, 2009


The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund is sponsoring a writing contest for law students. The subject of the contest is The Right of the Individual to Keep and Bear Arms as a Federally Protected Right. Cash prizes will be awarded to First, Second, Third and Fourth place winners in the amounts of $5,000, $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 respectively. The contest is open to all individuals who are law students at the date of submission and who have not been previously admitted to practice law in the United States. Admission to practice after submission of the paper is not disqualifying. Papers should be double-spaced, not exceed 30 pages in length, exclusive of endnotes, of law review quality, and cannot have been previously published. Publication subsequent to submission is encouraged. Citations should conform with the Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, current edition. Submissions must be postmarked no later than June 1, 2009 and mailed to NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund, c/o Office of the General Counsel, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030. Alumni Board of Directors Scholarship

Application Deadline: December 12, 2008

The Alumni Board of Directors Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the Board in 1998 to provide scholarship assistance to law students demonstrating academic merit and financial need. For Spring 2009, the Board plans to make awards of at least $2,000 each. Applications for the Alumni Board of Directors Scholarship are available online or in the Office of Admissions. Students interested must submit applications to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by December 12, 2008.

 

Jack Carey Scholarship for the Cook County Public Defender's Office

Application Deadline: November 1, 2008


The Jack Carey Scholarship for the Cook County Public Defender's office requires a commitment as an intern or extern at the Cook County Public Defender's office for one semester (fall, spring, summer). Each intern or extern will be expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week during their designated semester. Every scholarship application must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school. The scholarship is available only to those law students eligible for a license pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court rule 711. A total of three scholarship stipends, each in the amount of $2,000 will be awarded every school year (one per semester). In order to be considered for the scholarship, each applicant must complete the application and schedule an interview with the scholarship committee. Previous winners of this award are ineligible to apply.
