Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund Essay Contest

Application Deadline: June 1, 2008


The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund is sponsoring a writing contest for law students. The subject of the contest is "The Right of the Individual to Keep and Bear Arms as a Federally Protected Right." Cash prizes will be awarded to First, Second, Third and Fourth place winners in the amounts of $5,000, $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 respectively. The contest is open to all individuals who are law students at the date of submission and who have not been previously admitted to practice law in the United States. Admission to practice after submission of the paper is not disqualifying. Papers should be double-spaced, not exceed 30 pages in length, exclusive of endnotes, of law review quality, and cannot have been previously published. Publication subsequent to submission is encouraged. Citations should conform with the Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, current edition. Submissions must be postmarked no later than June 1, 2008 and mailed to Civil Rights Defense Fund, c/o Office of the General Counsel, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030. Alabama Law Foundation, Inc. Scholarship

Application Deadline: June 6, 2008

The Alabama Law Foundation, Inc. announces its scholarship in memory of its founding partners, Edward Harmon Cabaniss and Forney Johnson. The scholarship is awarded annually to a law student who is a resident of Alabama, is attending an accredited law school in the U.S. and will be a second year student. The scholarship will cover tuition and books for the second year of law school to a maximum of $5,000. A second place scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded at the committee's discretion. While academic achievement is the key factor in determining eligibility, consideration will also be given to other factors such as conscientiousness, dependability, civic involvement, financial need and dedication to the highest ethical standards. National Bar Institute African-American Law Student Fellowships

Application Deadline: May 15 , 2008

The National Bar Institute (NBI) was established in 1982 as the philanthropic arm of the National Bar Association (NBA). The African American Law Student Fellowship Program, a project of the Institute, was developed to assist students who are completing professional law degrees, a field where African American participation has traditionally been low. As more African Americans have successfully entered the legal profession and their contributions have gained wider recognition, the National Bar Institute has recognized the need to support law students in public interest areas, or in those specialties deemed critical where African Americans remain underrepresented within the legal profession. The fellowships are financed largely by NBA individual members, sections, regions, divisions, affiliates and augmented by corporations and foundations that value scholarship and believe in the potential of African-American lawyers. DuPage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers Scholarship

Application Deadline: May 12, 2008

The DuPage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers will once again award a scholarship to students of Italian extraction who have completed at least one semester of law school and are currently enrolled in law school. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000. The scholarships will be awarded in May 2008. The scholarship committee must receive applications and letters of recommendation from law school faculty no later than May 12, 2008 for full consideration. Applications are available in the office of admissions, suite 230.

Kane County Bar Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: May 1 , 2008

Through the generosity of the Kane County Bar Association members, the Kane County Bar Foundation has been able to award multiple scholarships. The Foundation awards at least two scholarships annually of $1,000 each to deserving Kane County resident law students. The Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 16, 2008

The Attorney-CPA Foundation is pleased to announce the annual Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarships. The Foundation will award scholarships in 2007 in amounts ranging from $250 to $1,000 to students who will be entering their third year of law school in the Fall of 2007 and who have obtained a CPA certificate. Since 1998, the Foundation has awarded over 54 scholarships to students at 28 law schools across the country. Applicants will be evaluated based upon their academic performance, leadership in the school and community and need for assistance in completing their studies. Scholarship applications should be postmarked by April 16, 2008. The recipients will be selected by the Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarship committee this July. Crusade for Education Financial Aid Program

Application Deadline: April 30, 2008

Students of Polish descent in need of financial aid may apply to the Knights of Dabrowski Crusade for Education program for help. A limited number of scholarships are available on the basis of documented financial need, academic performance and community involvement. Students are eligible to apply who meet the following requirements: full-time student enrolled in law school at a fully accredited college/university in the U.S.; U.S. citizen or documented legal alien of Polish descent; good academic standing and documented financial need; resident of Chicago metropolitan area for at least four years (proof of residency required); and recipient must be able to attend a scheduled interview in late spring and Award Presentation Ceremony in the fall of 2008. Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship

The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Award of $3,000 is presented annual at the Berks County Bar Association Law Day Event. It is given to help fund a deserving Berks County, Pennsylvania, resident embarking on his or her second year at an accredited law school. Blind Service Assocation Scholarship Program

Application Deadline:April 2, 2008


The Blind Service Association announces its scholarship program for 2008. Anyone who is a legally blind resident of the six-county Chicago Metropolitan area qualifies if he/she plans to study in the 2008/09 academic year in an accredited undergraduate, graduate, vocational, technical or professional school. Part-time students are also welcome to apply. The awards range up to $3,000. To apply, candidates must submit the application, transcripts, eye report, essay and letters of recommendation. The DuPage County Bar Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 30 , 2008


The DuPage County Bar Foundation is accepting applications for its annual Hartman Stime scholarship. This $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a DuPage County resident who will begin his or her second, third or fourth year of law school in fall, 2008. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of prior academic achievement and economic need. Applications are available online at www.dcba.org/public/found.htm. The selection committee will interview applicants at their Wheaton office on April 12, 2008. The recipient will be recognized at the foundation's annual Law Day luncheon which will take place on May 2, venue to be announced. Illinois Government Bar Association Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 1 , 2008


The Illinois Government Bar Association is offering a $500 scholarship to a deserving 1st, 2nd or 3rd year law student who is interested in government law. Applicants will be evaluated on education/experience; motivation/focus; academic reference/character; community member reference;character and aptitude. A possible 100 points can be awarded under the selection criteria/point system that is used. Bohemian Lawyers' Association of Chicago Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 31, 2008

The Bohemian Lawyers' Association of Chicago has several scholarships each in the amount of $1500 available to students currently attending law school in Illinois or neighboring states. These scholarships are open to students with Chicago ties and Czech, Moravian, Ruthenian, Silesian or Slovak ancestry. The $1500 scholarship will be presented at the BLAC Annual Installation Dinner held in Chicago in May. Applications must be postmarked on or before March 31, 2008. All students interested in applying must submit a completed scholarship application form, resume, transcript, and essay (limit 250 words). Illinois Judicial Council Foundation Scholarships

Application Deadline: April 10 , 2008

The Illinois Judicial Council Foundation announces its 2008 Law School Scholarships. To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria: be enrolled full-time in an accredited law school, rank in good standing, submit an official transcript, submit a financial statement, submit a completed scholarship application, submit two letters of recommendation, submit a personal statement and resume, and plan to be available to the scholarship commitee if selected. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.

Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois Scholarship programs

Application Deadline: April 7, 2008

The Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois and its JD Mentors Program is offering two scholarship opportunities to current law students who meet eligibility criteria. The HLAI/JDM & BARBRI Scholarship will provide post-graduation law students that secure legal or related employment with a government agency, a non-profit organization or public interest agency with a free BARBRI preparation course. The HLAI/JDM Fellowship will provide law students with a summer stipend provided that they secure legal or related employment with a government agency, non-profit organization, or public interest agency. NAWJ Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 11 , 2008

The National Association of Women Judges is pleased to announce the Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Scholarship.  This scholarship in the amount of $5,000, will be awarded to a Chicago area law student who has followed Justice Ginsburg’s extraordinary example of scholarship and commitment to public service.  NAWJ and Justice Ginsburg will present the scholarship to the recipient at the NAWJ Mid West Regional Conference.  The recipient must accept the scholarship in person at a luncheon on Thursday, August 28, 2008, at the InterContinental Chicago hotel.  Interested and eligible students should review the attached guidelines and complete and sign the attached Application Form, and submit it with a personal essay (limit 500 words) to the office of admissions ATTN: Karla Davis, Director of Admissions, no later than April 11, 2008. The office of admissions will then forward applications to the association for recipient selection by April 25, 2008.

CBF Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 15 , 2008

The Chicago Bar Foundation (CBF) is accepting applications for its 2008 Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Scholarship. The CBF's Marovitz Scholarship is intended to support a needy law student who is deeply committed to public interest work so that upon graduation financial need will not prevent the student from pursuing a legal aid or public interest legal career. The scholarship provides funds for needy public interest-minded students so they may complete law school with as little debt as possible. The CBF awards the scholarship annually to one student attenting one of the nine Illinois law schools. These funds, payable over a three-year period, will enable an incoming student who intends to pursue a career in public interest law to have a significant portion of his or her tuition and related expenses covered by scholarship funding. Contingent upon the recipient's continued compliane with the terms of the scholarship, the student will receive a total of $40,000 in scholarship funds disbursed as follows: $10,000 in the first year of law school, $15,000 in the second year, and $15,000 in the third year. The Northwest Suburban Bar Association Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 20 , 2008


The Northwest Suburban Bar Association Foundation is pleased to announce that they are accepting applications for the Honorable Timothy C. Evans Scholarship. The scholarship was established to honor the commitment and dedication that the Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Timothy C. Evans has devoted to the Northwest Suburban Bar Association (NWSBA) and to the community of Cook County. The scholarship is offered to currently enrolled law school students who reside in the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division (this includes Lake, Kane, DuPage, Cook, Will, Kendall, Grundy and LaSalle Counties). Scholarship awards range from $500 - $2500. Berman Arts Award

Chicago-Kent alumnus Ronald M. Berman, class of 1987, has established an award for a Chicago-Kent College of Law student who is interested in art, working with or representing not-for-profit arts organizations, or representing artists. The purpose of the Berman Arts Award is to expose law to artists and arts organizations. The Berman Arts Award will provide up to $2,000 toward tuition and related costs for a Chicago-Kent student to attend a 2008 summer studio workshop at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado. The Anderson Ranch Arts Center offers more than 130 summer workshops taught by today's most prominent artists and educators who come to share their skills and experience with more than 1,200 participants. There are workshops for artists of all skill levels and experience from the novice to the professional studio artist. Fifth World Conference on Nonsmokers Rights Writing Contest

Contest Deadline: March 1, 2008


The Fifth World Conference on Nonsmokers Rights will be held April 12-13 in Washington, DC where students can network with other attorneys involved in public health and international law. For students interested in public interest law, health law, public policy, medicine and law, and administrative law, this contest is an opportunity to get involved in legal research, advocacy, and affect change in legislation. ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 1, 2008


The ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during his or her time in law school. Recipients will be selected based on their qualifications for the scholarship and not on the law school they plan to attend. Therefore law students applying to any and all-ABA accredited law schools may benefit from these scholarships. The application is available online at http://www.abanet.org/fje. Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund Scholarship Program

The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Educational Fund is pleased to announce the 2007-08 Puerto Rican Bar Association (PRBA) Scholarship Program for Latino law students. The PRBA, founded in New York in 1957 is one of the oldest Latino bar associations in the U.S. Today, the PRBA continues its tradition of breaking down the barriers to the legal profession with active members throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico. All Latino students attending law school in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico) are eligible to apply. PRBA selects recipients based on financial need and academic promise. Scholarship recipients will be contacted directly by the PRBA by June 2007. All applicants must be a first or second year student in a JD degree program at an ABA approved law school. Students working towards their LLM are not eligible for this award.

Institute of Management Accountants Scholarships

Application Deadline: February 15 , 2008


The Institute of Management Accountants is pleased to offer scholarships to students pursuing accounting and finance graduate degrees. The Scholarships range from $1000 to $5000 and may include lodging, transportation and registration costs to both the IMA Annual Conference and Exposition and the IMA Student Leadership Conference. The application is available on the IMA web site at www.imanet.org/scholarships and the deadline to apply is February 15, 2008.

 

The Jewish Vocational Service of Metropolitan Chicago Scholarship

Application Deadline: February 15, 2008


The Jewish Vocational Service of Metropolitan Chicago is pleased to announce The Gertrude and Harry G. Fins Scholarship Fund will be available for the 2008-09 academic year. The amount available varies annually and awards range from $1,000 to $5,000. To be eligible a student must: be jewish; be enrolling or enrolled full-time; be domiciled in the Chicago metropolitan community; establish financial need; and demonstrate career promise. Students who meet these criteria should visit the Jewish Vocational Service Web site to obtain an application at www.jvschicago.org (click on Scholarship Services). 2008 Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest

The topic for this year's essay contest is "Global Warming: How Litigation Can Make a Difference." Any student currently enrolled in an ABA accredited law school may submit a legal essay for the competition. Essays can only be written during the academic year covered by the competition and may not be prepared as part of paid legal work outside of law school. The essay prize is a $5,000 cash award. Alumni Board of Directors Scholarship

Application Deadline: January 25, 2008


The Alumni Board of Directors (formerly known as The Law School Association Board of Directors) Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the Board in 1998 to provide scholarship assistance to law students demonstrating academic merit and financial need. For Spring 2008, the Board plans to make several awards of at least $1,000 each. Applications for the Alumni Board of Directors Scholarship are available online or in the Office of Admissions. Students interested must submit applications to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by January 25, 2008.

Kankakee County Society of Women in Law Book Scholarship

Application Deadline: January 15, 2008

The Society of Women in Law (SWIL) Scholarship Committee will award a scholarship to a deserving woman law student of an accredited Illinois law school. This year a $1,000 scholarship is available to help defray the cost of books. To qualify, applicants must be a resident of Illinois in any County other than Cook. The Scholarship Committee will consider financial need and applicants must document their financial need when required to do so. Students interested in being considered for the scholarship award must submit a resume; proof of permanent legal residence in a county other than Cook; an official law school transcript; and a brief essay of 250 words or less, expressing her thoughts on:

Whey she'd like to practice law outside of the Chicago metropolitan area upon graduation; How receipt of this scholarship will benefit her; and the impact of gender on the practice of law.

Asian Law Student Scholarship

Application Deadline: December 6, 2007

The Asian American Law Scholarship was established by alumni and friends of Chicago-Kent, including the Chinese American Bar Association, to provide financial assistance to students of Asian descent. Students, alumni, and friends celebrated the inception of this scholarship fund at a Chinese New Year reception in February 1997. In awarding the scholarship, the law school gives preference to students planning to serve the Asian community. Selection is based upon demonstrated commitment to serving needs of the Asian American community (most important factor) through pro bono and/or public interest work; good standing at his or her law school; financial need; and leadership potential. Applicants must submit an essay desciribing their commitment to serving the Asian American community and addressing the other criteria for the award, and submit letters of recommendation by persons who can be contacted by the Chinese American Bar Association. The recipient is selected by the Chinese American Bar Association. All application material should be submitted to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by December 6, 2007.

The Honorable Dean J. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship Fund

Application Deadline: December 6 , 2007


The Honorable Dean J. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship fund was established by Jennifer Prager Sodaro '86 in honor of her late husband Dean Sodaro '53 and has been supported by the Class of 1967, family, fellow faculty, colleagues and friends. This fund provides financial assistance to law students with need. Judge Sodaro taught part-time at Chicago-Kent while practicing law, then served on the faculty full-time from 1972 to 1990, when he was elected to the Circuit Court of Cook County and appointed to the Chancery Division. The scholarship amount is $1,000. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship Fund applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions. Nordic Law Club Scholarship

The Nordic Law Club of Chicago has been a professional and social organization for lawyers for over 70 years. The club annually awards a $1,000 scholarship to one third-year day or fourth-year evening student from each of the six area Chicago law schools. The criteria for consideration include financial need and a demonstrated interest in international law issues. Interested students should submit a letter of application to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by October 15, 2007.

Dupage Association of Women Lawyers Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 31, 2007

The Dupage Association of Women Lawyers Foundation is pleased to offer the Judge Helen C. Kinney Scholarship in honor of the memory, vision, and leadership of Judge Helen C. Kinney, the first woman appointed to the bench in DuPage County. Second or third year women law students with a DuPage county connection, are eligible to apply. The foundation anticipates awarding two scholarships of $1,000 to deserving women law students. The deadline for submission of the application is October 31, 2007. Winston & Strawn Diversity Scholarship

Application Deadline: November 1 , 2007

Winston & Strawn is offering five scholarships to diverse law school students who join the 2008 summer program in one of its domestic offices following the conclusion of their second year of law school. The $10,000 scholarship will be paid during the students’ third year of law school.

In selecting the scholarship recipients, Winston & Strawn will consider the students’:

  • Interest in practicing law after graduation in a large law firm in one of the cities in the United States in which Winston & Strawn has an office (currently, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Washington, DC)
  • Law school and undergraduate record, including academic achievements and involvement in extra-curricular activities
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Interpersonal skills

Scholarship recipients will be announced on or about December 15, 2007. To apply for the Winston & Strawn Diversity Scholarship, please complete and submit the scholarship application along with your resume, law school transcript, and a brief personal statement by November 1, 2007 to diversityscholarship@winston.com. Scholarship applicants who attend a law school at which Winston & Strawn conducts on-campus interviews should also sign up to see us on campus. For all other scholarship applicants, your scholarship application will also serve as your application to our 2008 summer program.

 

Intellectual Property Owners Education Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 12 , 2007

IPO Education Foundation will award two $10,000 scholarships this year to law students who have completed internships in corporate intellectual property law departments. Applications and eligibility requirements are available online at www.ipoef.org. The deadline to submit an application is October 12, 2007.

 

Illinois Bar Foundation Scholarship


Application Deadline: October 5, 2007 New Deadline!!

The Illinois Bar Foundation will award one scholarship in the amount of $3,000 to a second- or third-year Chicago-Kent student this year. The Board is seeking to award the scholarship to a student who demonstrates an accomplished academic record, involvement in diverse extracurricular and community activities, and has financial need. Membership in the Illinois State Bar Association is encouraged but not required. To access the online application, click here. Completed applications must be submitted to the office of admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, Director of Admissions, by October 5, 2007. The office of admissions will then forward applications to the foundation by October 15, 2007. The foundation will announce scholarship recipients in January 2008. South Suburban Bar Association Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 5, 2007

The South Suburban Bar Association has a $1,500 scholarship available to students who meet the criteria set by the South Suburban Bar Association. To apply, students must meet the following criteria: attending an accredited local law school; be a resident of the South Suburbs of Cook County and must have a present interest to practice law in the South Suburbs; and demonstrated financial need. Students interested in applying must submit a brief resume and a cover letter (200 word maximum) indicating why they want to practice on the Southside. The committee may conduct interviews of applicants or alternatively, may in its discretion, recommend a candidate to the Board of the South Suburban Bar Association. In order to receive the scholarship award, the student must attend the South Suburban Association Installation Dinner Dance to be held in December 2007 (date to be determined). Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship

Banner & Witcoff is pleased to offer the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for law students. This scholarship is part of Banner & Witcoff's continuing commitment to fostering the development of intellectual property lawyers from diverse backgrounds. The Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship is open to all students currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school and pursuing a career in intellectual property law. The applicant must be a member of a historically under represented group (including race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability) and must have exemplary writing and oral communication skills. Scholarship recipients will receive $5,000 payable for the fall semester of their second or third year of law school. Recipients of the scholarship who accept and successfully complete the firm's Summer Associate Program may receive an additional $5,000 payable for a subsequent semester of law school. Serbian Bar Association of America Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 1 , 2007

The Serbian Bar Association of America (SBAA) announces is academic scholarships for Serbian-American law students. The schoalrships range from $500 to $2,000 for qualified applicants. To apply, applicants need to be of Serbian birth or ancestry and/or their spouses, and be enrolled in an accredited law school in the U.S. Additional requirements are as follows: applicants must submit a typed essay of no more than 250 words detailing how they plan to use their legal education within the Serbian-American community; submit a certified copy of their law school transcript (or confirmation of enrollment for first years); maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout law school; and submit the completed application by the October 1 deadline. LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell Client Review Fellowship

Application Deadline: October 1 , 2007

The Minority Corporate Counsel Association and LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell are pleased to announce the creation of the LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell Client Review Fellowship. This program is open to third-year students and will award a one-time $15,000 gift. The deadline for applications is October 1, 2007. Applications are available in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.
