The Women’s Bar Foundation 2009 Public Service Stipend Award
Application Deadline: July 7, 2009
The Women's Bar Foundation (“WBF”) is pleased to announce that it will again award a Public Service Stipend Award ($15,000) to provide financial support to a recent woman Illinois law school graduate who is pursuing a career in public service or to a third-year woman Illinois law student who will pursue public service career after graduation.
Applications may be submitted electronically from the WBF website at www.womensbarfoundation.org, see on-line appln tab. The foundation will use the following criteria for the selection process: A third year law student or recent graduate who is currently pursuing, or has obtained, employment involving legal services in the not-for-profit or public sector; strong academic record; Present and past extracurricular activities reflecting community involvement or participation in activities within and outside of law school that show a commitment to public service or public interest law; Demonstrated financial need; Involvement with diversity initiatives within law school or the legal community (specific examples required); Personal qualities that suggest a future leadership role in the legal community; and A candidate who is (or who has a strong likelihood of) practicing in Illinois. For full consideration, the application must be submitted no later than July 7, 2009.
The Access Group Scholarship Video Contest
Application Deadline: July 15, 2009
Access Group recently announced a scholarship contest for law students. The Access Group "My Inspiration" contest is calling for current and entering law students to create and submit a brief video describing what inspired them to pursue a legal career. The contest winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship and up to five honorable mention scholarships of $1,500 each will also be awarded. The Jeremy Protas LGBT Patent Law Scholarship
Application Deadline: Between June 1 and July 31, 2009
Jeremy D. Protas, an attorney with the intellectual property law firm of Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP, announces the establishment of a Patent Law Scholarship specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender law students intending to pursue a legal career in the field of patent law. Candidates must be second-year students for the 2009-2010 academic year at an American Bar Association-accredited law school, and be eligible to sit for the Patent Bar Exam. Polish Women's Civic Club, Inc. Scholarships

The Polish Women's Civic Club, Inc. is a philanthropic organization of American women of Polish descent interested in discovering the richness of their Polish heritage and sharing it with others. The Club supports educational activities and personal efforts of Polish American students, male and female, through financial scholarships. To qualify for consideration of a scholarship, a student must fulfill the following requirements: be a U.S. citizen; have at least one parent of Polish heritage; be a Chicago resident; currently enrolled full-time second or third year student attending Chicago area school; demonstrate financial need; and permanent resident of State of Illinois. Interested students who meet the above criteria may obtain an application in the Office of Admissions, Suite 230.
Essex County Bar Association Scholarship
Application Deadline: May 15 , 2009
The Essex County Bar Association (ECBA) and its Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, in conjunction with the Honorable Vincent J. Biunno Memorial Fund is pleased to announce the continuation of the Biunno Scholarship Program for the 2009-10 school year. The scholarships are designed to offer financial assistance to persons with a disability who are currently attending law school. For purposes of this scholarship, a disability is limited to a permanent physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of the individual having such an impairment. Persons wishing to apply for the scholarship should know that apart from the requirement that they demonstrate a permanent disability consistent with the criterion outlined above, a variety of other factors, including financial need, law school achievement and commitment to the practice of law will enter into the decision making process. The Sovereignty Symposium Scholarship Program
Application Deadline: May 5 , 2009
The Oklahoma Supreme Court, in cooperation with the Oklahoma Indian Affairs Commission, the Sovereignty Symposium Inc., and the Oklahoma Arts Council will host Sovereignty Symposium XXII, June 3 and 4, 2009, at Oklahoma City's Skirvin Hilton Hotel. As part of the Symposium, the Court offers tuition scholarships to selected applicants. To apply, applicants should demonstrate an interest in and dedication to Native American law issues and the need for a scholarship in a letter of application. The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund Essay Contest
Application Deadline: June 1, 2009
The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund is sponsoring a writing contest for law students. The subject of the contest is The Right of the Individual to Keep and Bear Arms as a Federally Protected Right. Cash prizes will be awarded to First, Second, Third and Fourth place winners in the amounts of $5,000, $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 respectively. The contest is open to all individuals who are law students at the date of submission and who have not been previously admitted to practice law in the United States. Admission to practice after submission of the paper is not disqualifying. Papers should be double-spaced, not exceed 30 pages in length, exclusive of endnotes, of law review quality, and cannot have been previously published. Publication subsequent to submission is encouraged. Citations should conform with the Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, current edition. Submissions must be postmarked no later than June 1, 2009 and mailed to NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund, c/o Office of the General Counsel, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030. The Robert Masur Fellowship for Civil Liberties
Application Deadline: May 15, 2009
The Robert Masur Fellowship for Civil Liberties is open to current first-year law students. Offered annually by The Nation Institute, it consists of a $1000 honorarium for students who intend to carry out significant activities during the summer (in between their first and second year) in the areas of civil rights and/or civil liberties. Proposed activities may include a writing or research project, work with a public interest organization in the areas of civil rights or civil liberties, work on a civil rights or civil liberties law case under the supervision of a faculty member or lawyer, or any other work in the areas of civil rights or civil liberties.
Applicants should send a proposal, no more than two pages, describing his or her intended summer project, along with a resume, a brief letter of recommendation, and the name of their faculty or organizational sponsor. The Albert Pick, Jr. Fund Scholarship (for incoming first years)

The Albert Pick, Jr. Fund Law Student Scholarship Program opens May 1, 2009 for applications from law students who are long-term residents of Chicago, planning to enroll as first year full-time students at one of the schools listed below.
Applicants to the Albert Pick, Jr. Fund Law Student Scholarship Program must-
- Be long-term residents of Chicago, and
- Plan to enroll as a first year full-time law student for the entire 2009-10 academic year at one of the following schools: Chicago-Kent, DePaul, John Marshall or Loyola Chicago

The Chicago Bar Foundation Marovitz Scholarship (for incoming first years)

The Chicago Bar Foundation (CBF), the charitable affiliate of the Chicago Bar Association, recently announced the guidelines for its 2009 Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Scholarship. The CBF's Marovitz Scholarship is intended to support a needy law student who is deeply committed to public interest work so that upon graduation financial need will not prevent the student from pursuing a public interest legal career. The Scholarship provides funds for needy public interest-minded students so they may complete law school with as little debt as possible.
These funds, payable over a three-year period, will enable an incoming student who intends to pursue a career in public interest law to have a significant portion of his or her tuition and related expenses covered by Scholarship funding. Contingent on the recipient's continued compliance with the terms of the Scholarship, the student will receive $10,000 in the first year of law school, $15,000 in the second year, and $15,000 in the third year. (The payment schedule may be modified for part-time students).

The American Association for Justice Scholarship Program

The Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarship
Application Deadline: May 6, 2009
The Attorney-CPA Foundation is pleased to announce the annual Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarships. The Foundation will award scholarships in 2009 in amounts ranging from $250 to $1,000 to students who will be entering their third year of law school in the Fall of 2009 and who have obtained a CPA certificate. Applicants will be evaluated based upon their academic performance, leadership in the school and community and need for assistance in completing their studies. Scholarship applications should be postmarked by May 6, 2009. The recipients will be selected by the Attorney-CPA Foundation Scholarship committee this July. Kane County Bar Foundation Scholarship

Through the generosity of the Kane County Bar Association members, the Kane County Bar Foundation has been able to award multiple scholarships. The Foundation awards at least two scholarships annually of $1,000 each to deserving Kane County resident law students. The Defense Research Institute Diversity Scholarship

The Defense Research Institute (DRI) is currently offering a Law Student Diversity Scholarship program open to incoming second and third-year African American, Hispanic, Asian, Pan Asian and Native American students. Incoming second and third-year female law students are also eligible regardless of race or ethnicity. Two scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be awarded to successful applicants. the application and all other requested materials must be received by May 8, 2009. Winners will be announced at the DRI Diversity for Success Seminar June 11-12, 2009, in Chicago, Illinois. The two successful applicants will be notified in advanced of the seminar. DuPage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers Scholarship

The DuPage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers will once again award a scholarship to students of Italian extraction who have completed at least one semester of law school and are currently enrolled in law school. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000. The scholarships will be awarded in May 2009. The scholarship committee must receive applications and letters of recommendation from law school faculty no later than May 11, 2009 for full consideration. The Minority Corporate Counsel Association Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program

The Minority Corporate Counsel Association is accepting applications for the Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship Program. The scholarship program provides recipients with a $10,000 scholarship per year for up to three years. The total commitment per student is $30,000. Sixth World Conference on Nonsmokers Rights Writing Contest
Contest Deadline: May 1, 2009
The Sixth World Conference on Nonsmokers Rights will be held June 6-7 in Washington, DC where students can network with other attorneys involved in public health law, environmental law, and international law. For students interested in public interest law, health law, public policy, medicine and law, and administrative law, this writing contest is an opportunity to get involved in legal research, advocacy, and affect change in legislation. The writing contest is open to all law students and requires a 1000-word submission of a proposal for legal action to protect nonsmokers' rights. Prizes range from $1000 to $5000. Crusade for Education Financial Aid Program

Students of Polish descent in need of financial aid may apply to the Knights of Dabrowski Crusade for Education program for help. A limited number of scholarships are available on the basis of documented financial need, academic performance and community involvement. Students are eligible to apply who meet the following requirements: full-time student enrolled in law school at a fully accredited college/university in the U.S.; U.S. citizen or documented legal alien of Polish descent; good academic standing and documented financial need; resident of Chicago metropolitan area for at least four years (proof of residency required); and recipient must be able to attend a scheduled interview in late spring and Award Presentation Ceremony in the fall of 2009. The iModules Educational Scholarship Program

The iModules Educational Scholarship Program was established in March 2008. The goal of this program is to reward students with a financial scholarship to assist them in their educational pursuits. This program is for prospective and current students in both secondary and higher education (college or Post) fields of study. The application deadline is April 15 and winning students are notified by May 1st. Qualifications to apply: full-time student, minimum "C' grade point average, attendance at iModules client school, submit online application, essay, and profile. iModules will provide awards of $2500 to each scholarship recipient. 2009 Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest

The Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest is a $5,000 cash award given to the author of the winning essay. The 2009 topic is Pollution Preemption: Federal Preemption of State Tort Law and Environment Protection. Any student currently enrolled in an ABA accredited law school may submit a legal essay for the competition. Essays can only be written during the academic year covered by the competition and may not be prepared as part of paid legal work outside of law school. Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship

The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Award of $3,000 is presented annually at the Berks County Bar Association Law Day Event. It is given to help fund a deserving Berks County, Pennsylvania, resident embarking on his or her second year at an accredited law school. The Illinois Government Bar Association Scholarship

The Illinois Government Bar Association is offering a $500 scholarship to a deserving 1st, 2nd or 3rd year law student that is interested in government law. Applicants will be judged on education/experience, motivation/focus, academic reference/character, community member reference/character and aptitude. National Federation of the Blind

The National Federation of the Blind has a large and prestigious scholarship program whose awards are made solely to persons who are legally blind. The Federation's program will award thirty scholarships to high-achievng legally blind students in July 2009. Scholarships range from $3,000 to $12,000. Grand Rapids Community Foundation Scholarships
Application Deadline: April 1, 2009
The Grand Rapids Community Foundation administers two scholarship programs funded by local law firms aimed at increasing diversity in all areas of the legal profession.
Miller Johnson West Michigan Diversity Scholarships for minority students are available to students of ethnic minority currently residing in Michigan (with preference given to West Michigan residents) pursuing a law degree at any accredited law school in the United States. One $5,000 scholarship is awarded each year.
Warner Norcross & Judd LLP Scholarships for minority students are awarded to students of racial and ethnic minority heritage pursuing a law degree. Applicants must be a current or former resident of Michigan if they are not currently attending a school in Michigan.

The American Association of University Women "Return to Learning" Scholarships

The Lombard Area Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is offering two "Return to Learning" scholarships to be used for the 2009-10 academic year. These scholarships are available to qualified women residents of the Lombard, Villa Park, Oakbrook Terrace, or Glendale Heights postal districts or members or daughters of members of the Lombard Area AAUW Branch. Bohemian Lawyers' Association of Chicago Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 31, 2009
The Bohemian Lawyers' Association of Chicago (BLAC) has several scholarships each in the amount of $1500 available to students currently attending law school in Illinois or neighboring states. These scholarships are open to students with Chicago ties and Czech, Moravian, Ruthenian, Silesian or Slovak ancestry. The scholarships will be presented at the BLAC Annual Installation Dinner held in Chicago in May. Applications must be postmarked on or before March 31, 2009. All students interested in applying must submit a completed scholarship application form, resume, transcript, and essay (limit 250 words). The DuPage County Bar Foundation Scholarship

The DuPage County Bar Foundation is accepting applications for its annual Hartman Stime scholarship. This $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a DuPage County resident who will begin his or her second, third or fourth year of law school in fall, 2009. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of prior academic achievement and economic need. Applications are available online at http://www.dcba.org/public/found.htm. The selection committee will interview applicants at their Wheaton office on April 11, 2009. The recipient will be recognized at the foundation's annual Law Day luncheon which will take place on May 1st, venue to be announced. The William McClain Scholarship funded by the Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Bar Association
Application Deadline: March 11, 2009
The William McClain Scholarship is funded jointly by the Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati (BLAC) and the Cincinnati Bar Association and awarded to a Black Cincinnati resident attending any accredited law school who demonstrates leadership potential, dedication to community, and a financial need. ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship
Application Deadline: March 2, 2009
The ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during his or her time in law school. Recipients will be selected based on their qualifications for the scholarship and not on the law school they plan to attend. Therefore law students applying to any and all-ABA accredited law schools may benefit from these scholarships. The application is available online at http://www.abanet.org/fje. Illinois Judicial Council Foundation Scholarships

The Illinois Judicial Council Foundation announces its 2009 Law School Scholarships. Since 1999, the Illinois Judicial Council Foundation has funded numerous scholarships, totaling in excess of $100,000 to minority and deserving law students throughout Illinois and beyond. This year the committee has decided to use the following criteria in awarding the scholarships: need, community involvement, academic achievement, communication skills and overcoming obstacles. To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria: be enrolled full-time in an accredited law school; rank in good standing; and submit an official transcript, financial statement, scholarship application, two letters of recommendation, a personal statement and resume. The Chicago Lesbian and Gay Bar Association Summer Scholarship

The Chicago Lesbian and Gay Bar Association announces its summer scholarship program. The LAGBAC will award scholarship grants to support full-time employment at a qualified LGBT/civil rights organization during the 2009 summer. First, second and third year law students are encouraged to apply. The scholarship grants range in amount from $3,000 to $4,000 depending on a variety of factors. Applications are due by March 1, 2009. The application can be found at www.lagbac.org.
Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund Scholarship

The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Educational Fund is pleased to announce the 2009-10 Puerto Rican Bar Association (PRBA) Scholarship Program for Latino law students. The PRBA, founded in New York in 1957 is one of the oldest Latino bar associations in the U.S. Today, the PRBA continues its tradition of breaking down the barriers to the legal profession with active members throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico. All Latino students attending law school in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico) are eligible to apply. PRBA selects recipients based on financial need and academic promise. All applicants must be a first or second year student in a JD degree program at an ABA approved law school. Third year evening students are also eligible to apply. Students working towards their LLM are not eligible for this award. Scholarship recipients will be notified by June of 2009.

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Scholarship
Application Deadline: February 15, 2009
Educational scholarship funds from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago are available for the 2009-2010 academic year. Approximately $500,000 is available for Jewish students who are identified as having promise for significant contributions in their chosen careers, and are in need of financial assistance for full-time academic programs primarily in the helping professions. To be eligible a student must: be enrolling or enrolled full-time; be domiciled in the Chicago metropolitan community; establish financial need; and demonstrate career promise. The Jewish Vocational Service administers the scholarship program and personally interviews all applicants before April 20, 2009 at one of its many offices throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. Institute of Management Accountants Scholarships
Application Deadline: February 15 , 2009
The Institute of Management Accountants is pleased to offer scholarships to students pursuing accounting and finance graduate degrees. The Scholarships range from $1000 to $5000 and may include lodging, transportation and registration costs to both the IMA Annual Conference and Exposition and the IMA Student Leadership Conference. The application is available on the IMA web site at www.imanet.org/scholarships and the deadline to apply is February 15, 2009.
The Students for Change Scholarship
Application Deadline: January 20, 2009
Three (3) scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each will be awarded by NLS Publishing to the winners of the 2008 Students for Change Essay Writing Contest. The contest is open to high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students that will attend a regionally accredited college or university in the United States in the fall of 2009.
Students wishing to enter the contest are required to submit a 1000 to 2000 word essay describing “what the election of Barack Obama, the first African-American President, means to you and your family.” Students are encouraged to discuss this historic event with their parents and grandparents, and to incorporate these discussions into their essays. Alumni Board of Directors Scholarship
Application Deadline: December 12, 2008
The Alumni Board of Directors Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the Board in 1998 to provide scholarship assistance to law students demonstrating academic merit and financial need. For Spring 2009, the Board plans to make awards of at least $2,000 each. Applications for the Alumni Board of Directors Scholarship are available online or in the Office of Admissions. Students interested must submit applications to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by December 12, 2008.
The Roddy Scholarship
Application Deadline: January 12, 2009
Joseph V. Roddy, a 1962 Chicago-Kent graduate, established this fund to provide financial assistance to evening division students currently working in law enforcement. Preference for this scholarhip is given to first year students and the award amount varies depending upon the number of scholarships awarded. To apply, applicants should forward a letter of interest and current resume to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by January 12, 2009.
Gates Memorial Scholarship
Application Deadline: January 12, 2009
The Marvin Gates Memorial Fund provides $200 for books and supplies for a financially needy third-year student. Preference is given to students of Jewish faith and to students with demonstrated financial need and a commitment to social justice. The fund was established by Paula Gates, ‘96, in honor of her father, Marvin Gates. Mr. Gates was a professional engineer who valued education and who understood the needs of his community and those of the third world countries where he spent time during his career. Asian Law Student Scholarship

The Asian American Law Scholarship was established by alumni and friends of Chicago-Kent, including the Chinese American Bar Association, to provide financial assistance to students of Asian descent. In awarding the scholarship, the association gives preference to students planning to serve the Asian community. Selection for this $1,000 award is based upon demonstrated commitment to serving needs of the Asian American community (most important factor) through pro bono and/or public interest work; good standing at his or her law school; financial need; and leadership potential. Applicants must submit an essay desciribing their commitment to serving the Asian American community and addressing the other criteria for the award, and submit letters of recommendation by persons who can be contacted by the Chinese American Bar Association. The recipient is selected by the Chinese American Bar Association. All application material should be submitted to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by January 12, 2009.
The Honorable Dean J. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship

The Honorable Dean J. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship fund was established by Jennifer Prager Sodaro '86 in honor of her late husband Dean Sodaro '53 and has been supported by the Class of 1967, family, fellow faculty, colleagues and friends. This fund provides financial assistance to law students with need. Judge Sodaro taught part-time at Chicago-Kent while practicing law, then served on the faculty full-time from 1972 to 1990, when he was elected to the Circuit Court of Cook County and appointed to the Chancery Division. The scholarship amount is $1,000. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship Fund applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions. Jack Carey Scholarship for the Cook County Public Defender's Office

The Jack Carey Scholarship for the Cook County Public Defender's office requires a commitment as an intern or extern at the Cook County Public Defender's office for one semester (fall, spring, summer). Each intern or extern will be expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week during their designated semester. Every scholarship application must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school. The scholarship is available only to those law students eligible for a license pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court rule 711. A total of three scholarship stipends, each in the amount of $2,000 will be awarded every school year (one per semester). In order to be considered for the scholarship, each applicant must complete the application and schedule an interview with the scholarship committee. Previous winners of this award are ineligible to apply.
