Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives notices of scholarships that are offered through external organizations. Information about the scholarship awards that are currently available is listed below.  Award notices are listed in the order in which they were received.

The Jeremy Protas LGBT Patent Law Scholarship

Application Deadline: July 31, 2010

Jeremy D. Protas, an attorney with the intellectual property law firm of Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP, announces the establishment of a Patent Law Scholarship specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender law students intending to pursue a legal career in the field of patent law. Candidates must be second-year students for the 2010-2011 academic year at an American Bar Association-accredited law school, and be eligible to sit for the Patent Bar Exam. Asian American Bar Association for the Greater Chicago Area Law Foundation Scholarship

The board members of the Asian American Bar Association for the Greater Chicago Area Law Foundation (“AABA Law Foundation”) and members of its scholarship committee, announce the AABA Law Foundation's scholarship program.  The AABA Law Foundation was established in February 2009, and is a non-profit, charitable and educational affiliate of Asian American Bar Association ("AABA") that is tax-exempt under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). 

One of the goals of the AABA Law Foundation is to provide financial assistance to Asian Pacific American law students who have demonstrated academic excellence and social leadership.  Starting this year, the AABA Law Foundation will award annual scholarships to law students who have demonstrated a commitment to serving the needs of the Chicago-area Asian Pacific American community, and who will continue to serve the needs of the Chicago-area Asian Pacific American communities through pro bono, public interest, and/or public service legal work in the future.  This year, the AABA Law Foundation intends to award two Inaugural Scholarships of $2,500 each to law students who have exemplified that commitment. The My Recipe - My Heritage Scholarship Essay Contest

My Recipe – My Heritage Scholarship Essay Contest - $4,500 worth of prizes will be awarded.  Both US citizens and foreign students currently attending a US college, university, or another institution of higher education are eligible to participate.  The essay should explore the place culinary traditions hold in one’s cultural/ethnic identity.  For more information and submission guidelines, visit

My Recipe – My Heritage Scholarship Essay Contest

The scholarship essay contest aims at exploring the place culinary traditions hold in one’s cultural/ethnic identity.  We hope that the scholarship will serve to increase the awareness of culinary history as a vital aspect of cultural studies and a means of preserving and perpetuating ethnic traditions and values.  FastRecipes.com is a non-commercial online culinary arts journal.

 

The Darleen J. and Robert L. Walker Scholarship Fund

Application Deadline: June 25 , 2010

The Darleen J. and Robert L. Walker Scholarship Fund is accepting applications for the upcoming academic year. Information and instructions for applying may be obtained on our Web site: www.walkerscholarship.org.

Preference will be given to a son or daughter of a member of Masonic Lodge 1098 in Lombard, Illinois, or to former residents of the Masonic Children?s Home in La Grange, Illinois, and those who come from Masonic families.

Scholarships may be renewed each year upon verification of continued financial need and good standing at the law school.

The application deadline is June 25, 2010.

 

Polish Women's Civic Club, Inc. Scholarships

The Polish Women's Civic Club, Inc. is a philanthropic organization of American women of Polish descent interested in discovering the richness of their Polish heritage and sharing it with others. The Club supports educational activities and personal efforts of Polish American students, male and female, through financial scholarships. To qualify for consideration of a scholarship, a student must fulfill the following requirements: be a U.S. citizen; have at least one parent of Polish heritage; be a Chicago resident; currently enrolled full-time second or third year student attending Chicago area school; demonstrate financial need; and permanent resident of State of Illinois. DuPage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 30, 2010

The DuPage County Chapter of the Justinian Society of Lawyers will once again award a scholarship to students of Italian extraction who have completed at least one semester of law school and are currently enrolled in law school. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000. The scholarships will be awarded May 27, 2010. The scholarship committee must receive applications and letters of recommendation from law school faculty no later than April 30, 2010 for full consideration. Seventh World Conference on Nonsmokers Rights Writing Contest

Contest Deadline: May 1, 2010


The Seventh World Conference on Nonsmokers Rights will be held June 12-13 in Washington, DC where students can network with other attorneys involved in public health law, environmental law, and international law. For students interested in public interest law, health law, public policy, medicine and law, and administrative law, this writing contest is an opportunity to get involved in legal research, advocacy, and affect change in legislation. The writing contest is open to all law students and requires a 1000-word submission of a proposal for legal action to protect nonsmokers' rights. Prizes range from $1000 to $5000. Crusade for Education Financial Aid Program

Application Deadline: May 15, 2010

Students of Polish descent in need of financial aid may apply to the Knights of Dabrowski Crusade for Education program for help. A limited number of scholarships are available on the basis of documented financial need, academic performance and community involvement. Students are eligible to apply who meet the following requirements: full-time student enrolled in law school at a fully accredited college/university in the U.S.; U.S. citizen or documented legal alien of Polish descent; good academic standing and documented financial need; resident of Chicago metropolitan area for at least four years (proof of residency required); and recipient must be able to attend a scheduled interview in late spring and Award Presentation Ceremony in the fall of 2010. The Little Village Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Scholarship

Since 2002, the Little Village Chamber of Commerce has striven to provide over $450,000 in educational Scholarships for Hispanic students through the "Ambassador Scholarship" Program. The organization is proud to serve the large Latino population in the Chicago land area. The vision of the Little Village Chamber of Commerce is to strengthen communities by advancing the college education of Latino Students through its Ambassador Scholarship Program. Kane County Bar Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: May 1 , 2010

Through the generosity of Kane County Bar Association members, the Foundation has been able to award at least two scholarships of $1,000 each year.  Qualified applicants are Kane County residents (or whose parents reside in Kane County) who are attending law school in the 2010 – 2011 academic year.  The scholarship application deadline is May 1, 2010 and applications can be obtained on the Kane County Bar Foundation's website:  http://www.kanecountybar.org/files/KCBFScholarshipApplication2010-11.pdf. 

 

Essex County Bar Association Scholarship

Application Deadline: May 7 , 2010

The Essex County Bar Association (ECBA) and its Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, in conjunction with the Honorable Vincent J. Biunno Memorial Fund is pleased to announce the continuation of the Biunno Scholarship Program for the 2009-10 school year. The scholarships are designed to offer financial assistance to persons with a disability who are currently attending law school. For purposes of this scholarship, a disability is limited to a permanent physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of the individual having such an impairment. Persons wishing to apply for the scholarship should know that apart from the requirement that they demonstrate a permanent disability consistent with the criterion outlined above, a variety of other factors, including financial need, law school achievement and commitment to the practice of law will enter into the decision making process. The Chicago Bar Foundation Marovitz Scholarship (for incoming first years)

Application Deadline: May 14, 2010

The Chicago Bar Foundation (CBF), the charitable affiliate of the Chicago Bar Association, recently announced the guidelines for its 2010 Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Scholarship. The CBF's Marovitz Scholarship is intended to support a needy law student who is deeply committed to public interest work so that upon graduation financial need will not prevent the student from pursuing a public interest legal career. The Scholarship provides funds for needy public interest-minded students so they may complete law school with as little debt as possible.

These funds, payable over a three-year period, will enable an incoming student who intends to pursue a career in public interest law to have a significant portion of his or her tuition and related expenses covered by Scholarship funding. Contingent on the recipient's continued compliance with the terms of the Scholarship, the student will receive $10,000 in the first year of law school, $15,000 in the second year, and $15,000 in the third year. (The payment schedule may be modified for part-time students).

The Albert Pick, Jr. Fund Scholarship (for incoming first years)

Application Deadline: June 1, 2010

The Albert Pick, Jr. Fund Law Student Scholarship Program opens May 1, 2010 for applications from law students who are long-term residents of Chicago, planning to enroll as first year full-time students at one of the schools listed below. 

Applicants to the Albert Pick, Jr. Fund Law Student Scholarship Program must-

  • Be long-term residents of Chicago, and
  • Plan to enroll as a first year full-time law student for the entire 2010-11 academic year at one of the following schools: Chicago-Kent, DePaul, John Marshall or Loyola Chicago

The Robert Masur Fellowship for Civil Liberties

Application Deadline: May 15, 2010

The Robert Masur Fellowship for Civil Liberties is open to current first-year law students. Offered annually by The Nation Institute, it consists of a $1000 honorarium for students who intend to carry out significant activities during the summer (in between their first and second year) in the areas of civil rights and/or civil liberties. Proposed activities may include a writing or research project, work with a public interest organization in the areas of civil rights or civil liberties, work on a civil rights or civil liberties law case under the supervision of a faculty member or lawyer, or any other work in the areas of civil rights or civil liberties.

Applicants should send a proposal, no more than two pages, describing his or her intended summer project, along with a resume, a brief letter of recommendation, and the name of their faculty or organizational sponsor. The Howard Fox Memorial Scholarship

In 1978 the Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Fund was established by Helen and Richard Fox and Friends to honor the memory of their son who, as a proud member of the Berks County Bar Association, served as a young attorney in the Public Defender’s Office. The Howard Fox Memorial Law Scholarship Award of $3,000 is presented annually at the Berks County Bar Association Law Day Event.  It is given to help fund a deserving Berks County, Pennsylvania, resident embarking on his or her second year at an accredited Law School. The Fredrikson and Byron Minority Scholarship

The Fredrikson & Byron Foundation Minority Scholarship Program sponsors educational opportunities for currently enrolled, first-year law students of diverse backgrounds. The Foundation offers one award of $10,000.

The Illinois Government Bar Association Scholarship

The Illinois Government Bar Association is offering a $750 scholarship to a deserving 1st, 2nd or 3rd year law student that is interested in government law. Applicants will be judged on education/experience, motivation/focus, academic reference/character, community member reference/character and aptitude. Grand Rapids Community Foundation Scholarships

Application Deadline: April 1, 2010

The Grand Rapids Community Foundation administers two scholarship programs funded by local law firms aimed at increasing diversity in all areas of the legal profession.

Miller Johnson West Michigan Diversity Scholarships for minority students are available to students of ethnic minority currently residing in Michigan (with preference given to West Michigan residents) pursuing a law degree at any accredited law school in the United States. One $5,000 scholarship is awarded each year.

Warner Norcross & Judd LLP Scholarships for minority students are awarded to students of racial and ethnic minority heritage pursuing a law degree. One $5,000 scholarship is awarded each year. The law school scholarship is not limited to schools in Michigan; however the applicant must be a current or former resident of Michigan if they are not currently attending a school in Michigan.

Bohemian Lawyers' Association of Chicago Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 31, 2010

The Bohemian Lawyers' Association of Chicago (BLAC) has several scholarships each in the amount of $1500 available to students currently attending law school in Illinois or neighboring states. These scholarships are open to students with Chicago ties and Czech, Moravian, Ruthenian, Silesian or Slovak ancestry. The scholarships will be presented at the BLAC Annual Installation Dinner held in Chicago in May. Applications must be postmarked on or before March 31, 2010. All students interested in applying must submit a completed scholarship application form, resume, transcript, and essay (limit 250 words). Illinois Judicial Council Foundation Scholarships

Application Deadline: March 31 , 2010

The Illinois Judicial Council (IJC) Foundation announces its 2010 Law School Scholarships. The IJC, founded in 1983, is an organization comprised primarily, but not exclusively, of African-American State and Federal judges, administrative judges and hearing officers. It has dedicated itself to bridging the gap between the judiciary and the community through educational dialogues regarding the legal system. Since 1999, the IJC Foundation has funded numerous scholarships, totaling in excess of $100,000 to minority and other deserving law school students throughout Illinois and beyond. To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria: be enrolled full-time in an accredited law school, rank in good standing, submit an official transcript, submit a financial statement, submit a completed scholarship application, submit two letters of recommendation, submit a personal statement and resume, and plan to be available to the scholarship committee if selected. The DuPage County Bar Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 22 , 2010


The DuPage County Bar Foundation is accepting applications for its annual Hartman Stime scholarship. This $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a DuPage County resident who will begin his or her second, third or fourth year of law school in fall, 2010. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of prior academic achievement and economic need. Applications are available online at http://www.dcba.org/public/found.htm. The selection committee will interview applicants at their Wheaton office on April 10, 2010. The recipient will be recognized at the foundation's annual Law Day luncheon which will take place on April 30, venue to be announced. Rubenstein Scholarship - Deadline Extended

Application Deadline: March 24, 2010

The Rubenstein Scholarship Fund was established by Jeffrey and Susan Rubenstein, two friends of the law school. Mr. Rubenstein is an adjunct professor at Chicago-Kent and a partner at the firm of Much, Shelist, Freed, Denenberg & Ament. The recipient of this scholarship will be based on financial need with preference given to students who are financing their law school education by working part-time jobs in the hospitality or food service industries. This scholarship ranges from $1,000 to $3,000. To apply, applicants should forward a letter of interest and current resume to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by March 24, 2010.

The William McClain Scholarship funded by the Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Bar Association

Application Deadline: March 15, 2010

The William McClain Scholarship is funded jointly by the Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati (BLAC) and the Cincinnati Bar Association and awarded to a Black Cincinnati resident attending any accredited law school who demonstrates leadership potential, dedication to community, and a financial need. Central Illinois Women's Bar Association Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 12, 2010

The Central Illinois Women's Bar Association is proud to announce its 2010 scholarship opportunity. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded in 2010. To apply, applicants must be female, enrolled in an accredited law school, and a resident of one of the following Illinois counties upon graduating from high school:

Adams, Brown, Calhoun, Cass, Champaign, Christian, Clark, Coles, Cumberland, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Ford, Greene, Jersey, Livingston, Logan, Macon, Menard, Montgomery, Morgan, Moultrie, Piatt, Pike, Sangamon, Schuyler, Scott, Vermilion, and Woodford.

Canadian American Bar Association’s 2010 Law Student Essay Competition

Application Deadline: March 7, 2010

The Canadian American Bar Association is pleased to announce its 2010 Law Student Essay Competition. The competition is open to all students currently enrolled in law school in the United States or Canada. The essay must be the student’s original, unpublished work. Compare U.S. and Canadian law in an area of law of your choice. First place: $500. 2nd place: $100. The two winning articles will be published on the Canadian
American Bar Association website. The essays will be evaluated by a committee of Canadian American Bar Association members on the following criteria: clarity of the analysis; quality of the analysis and research; quality of writing, including organization, grammar, syntax, and form. Neither the contestant’s identity nor their academic institution will be known to the committee. The winner will be announced in March 2010. ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 1, 2010


The ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during his or her time in law school. Recipients will be selected based on their qualifications for the scholarship and not on the law school they plan to attend. Therefore law students applying to any and all-ABA accredited law schools may benefit from these scholarships. The application is available online at http://www.abanet.org/fje. The Perkins Coie 1L Diversity Fellowship

The Chicago office of Perkins Coie has extended the application deadline for its 1L Diversity Fellowship. The fellowships provide students a $7500 academic scholarship and a paid position as a 2010 summer associate. For details regarding this fellowship opportunity, please click here.

The Roddy Scholarship

Application Deadline: February 5, 2010 (Deadline extended)

Joseph V. Roddy, a 1962 Chicago-Kent graduate, established this fund to provide financial assistance to evening division students currently working in law enforcement. Preference for this scholarhip is given to first year students and the award amount varies depending upon the number of scholarships awarded. Gates Memorial Scholarship

Application Deadline:February 1, 2010

The Marvin Gates Memorial Fund provides $200 for books and supplies for a financially needy third-year student. Preference is given to students of Jewish faith and to students with demonstrated financial need and a commitment to social justice. The fund was established by Paula Gates, ‘96, in honor of her father, Marvin Gates. Mr. Gates was a professional engineer who valued education and who understood the needs of his community and those of the third world countries where he spent time during his career. Asian Law Student Scholarship

Application Deadline: February 5, 2010 (Deadline extended)

The Asian American Law Scholarship was established by alumni and friends of Chicago-Kent, including the Chinese American Bar Association, to provide financial assistance to students of Asian descent. In awarding the scholarship, the association gives preference to students planning to serve the Asian community. Selection for this $1,000 award is based upon demonstrated commitment to serving needs of the Asian American community (most important factor) through pro bono and/or public interest work; good standing at his or her law school; financial need; and leadership potential. Applicants must submit an essay desciribing their commitment to serving the Asian American community and addressing the other criteria for the award, and submit letters of recommendation by persons who can be contacted by the Chinese American Bar Association. The recipient is selected by the Chinese American Bar Association. All application material should be submitted to the Office of Admissions, ATTN: Karla Davis, by February 5, 2010.

The Honorable Dean J. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship

Application Deadline:February 1, 2010

The Honorable Dean J. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship fund was established by Jennifer Prager Sodaro '86 in honor of her late husband Dean Sodaro '53 and has been supported by the Class of 1967, family, fellow faculty, colleagues and friends. This fund provides financial assistance to law students with need. Judge Sodaro taught part-time at Chicago-Kent while practicing law, then served on the faculty full-time from 1972 to 1990, when he was elected to the Circuit Court of Cook County and appointed to the Chancery Division. The scholarship amount is $1,000. Sodaro Memorial Scholarship Fund applications are available online or in the Office of Admissions. The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Scholarship

Application Deadline: February 15, 2010

Educational scholarship funds from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago are available for the 2010-2011 academic year. Approximately $500,000 is available for Jewish students who are identified as having promise for significant contributions in their chosen careers, and are in need of financial assistance for full-time academic programs primarily in the helping professions. To be eligible a student must: be enrolling or enrolled full-time; be domiciled in the Chicago metropolitan community; establish financial need; and demonstrate career promise. The Jewish Vocational Service administers the scholarship program and personally interviews all applicants before April 20, 2010 at one of its many offices throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd. 2010 Diversity In Patent Law Fellowship

Application Deadline: January 15, 2010

Each year, McAndrews offers a $5,000 fellowship and a paid summer clerkship to a qualified first-year law student at an ABA-accredited law school who has a diverse background, possesses a degree in science or engineering, and is committed to pursuing a career in patent law in Chicago.  Applications for the 2010 fellowship will be accepted from December 1, 2009, through January 15, 2010.  As a summer associate, the Diversity Fellow will gain experience in a wide range of intellectual property law and will be eligible to receive an offer to return for a second summer.  To facilitate the Diversity Fellow’s professional growth and learning, a member of the McAndrews Diversity Committee will serve as a mentor and resource.

The  South Suburban Bar Association's, Henry A. Gentile Memorial Scholarship

Application Deadline: November 6, 2009

The South Suburban Bar Association has a $1,500 scholarship available to students who meet the criteria set by the South Suburban Bar Association. To apply, students must meet the following criteria: attending an accredited local law school; be a resident of the South Suburbs of Cook County and must have a present interest to practice law in the South Suburbs; and demonstrated financial need. Students interested in applying must submit a brief resume and a cover letter (200 word maximum) indicating why they want to practice on the Southside. The committee may conduct interviews of applicants or alternatively, may in its discretion, recommend a candidate to the Board of the South Suburban Bar Association. In order to receive the scholarship award, the student must attend the South Suburban Association Installation Dinner Dance to be held December 4, 2009. The Richard Linn American Inn of Court Mark T. Banner Scholarship for Law Students

Application Deadline: October 9, 2009

The Linn Inn Mark T. Banner Scholarship is a new scholarship created in the name of the late Mark T. Banner, a former Linn Inn founder and Master, a leader in the field of patent law in his own right, and the son of Donald W. Banner. This scholarship is part of the Linn Inn's commitment to fostering the development of intellectual property lawyers with commitment to ethics, professionalism and civility. The scholarship is open to all students currently enrolled in an ABA accredited law school interested in pursuing a career in intellectual property law. Applicants must have exemplary writing and oral communication skills. Recipients of the scholarship will receive $5,000 payable for the fall 2010 semester. The  Serbian Bar Association of America Scholarship Program

The Serbian Bar Association of America offers four scholarships to eligible law students currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. law school. These scholarships are awarded at the annual Scholarship Gala, which will be held on November 14, 2009 in Chicago. The Donald Banner Diversity Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 1, 2009

The Donald Banner Diversity Scholarship is open to all students currently enrolled in an American Bar Association accredited law school and pursuing a career in intellectual property law. The applicant must be a member of a historically under represented group (including race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability) and must have exemplary writing and oral communication skills. Latham & Watkins LLP Fifth Annual Diversity Scholars Program

Application Deadline: September 15, 2009

Latham & Watkins LLP has opened the application process for the firm's fifth annual Diversity Scholars Program.

The firm is to award a $10,000 scholarship to each of four second-year law students for use during their third year (2010-11) at a law school.

The program was designed to help increase the number of diverse attorneys who want to pursue careers in global law firms. Factors considered in the selection of diversity scholars include academic and leadership achievements, life experiences and challenges, and a desire to practice at a global law firm and contribute to its diversity objectives.

Students are asked to submit an application form, personal statement, resume and official or unofficial law school transcript by Sept. 15. Visit the firm's Web site under the Diversity Scholars Program heading for details.
