Center for Law and Computers

About the Center for Law and Computers.

Chicago-Kent College of Law was among the first law schools in the country to recognize the importance of computers in the future of legal education and practice, and to make computer facilities available to students from the beginning of their legal careers. The Center for Law and Computers at Chicago-Kent was established in 1983 as a center for research and the teaching of the integration of computers into law practice and legal education. The Center provides students with on-going training in legal productivity tools.

During the first week of school, first-year students learn how to use computers to help brief cases and prepare individual course outlines as study aids. These skills go beyond computer basics to give students a framework in which to organize information in an efficient and logical manner. Often throughout the semester, the Center also holds more advanced mini-courses to help students use computers in their substantive and legal writing courses.

Chicago-Kent College of Law is located in a new state-of-the-art building with a sophisticated computer network infrastructure. The law school's three computer labs contain more than sixty personal computers reserved for law student use, connected to a local area network. A variety of software, including word processing, database and spreadsheet tools, and writing analysis programs, is available. The network allows student workstations to access LEXIS and WESTLAW, the Career Services Database, and laser printing, and to send electronic mail (email) to other students, faculty, and administrators, within the school and around the world.

Law students are also able to take many of their final exams on computer and to access their final grades through the network. The network communication ports located in the library, in selected classrooms and in areas throughout the law school, permit students to access the Chicago-Kent network with portable laptop and notebook computers.

Internet resources at Chicago-Kent are continually evolving and advancing as technology advances. Chicago-Kent has recognized the growing role of the Internet in education and the world, and is constantly striving to keep pace!
