NEW YEAR - BIG CHANGES IN THE CLC!

1. NEW LOOK OF COMPUTERS AT KENT!

We've updated the interface to all email stations and lab computers to familiarize you with the look and feel of your own personal computer and computer interfaces you will find working in a firm. This new interface operates from the familiar Windows 95/98 display, but the icons have been positioned on the desktop to allow you to access the commonly used networking features, such as the Word Processors, Web Browsers and E-Mail. (That's right, we're making Internet Explorer available in addition to Netscape!)

One caveat to the new interface is that you get the standard Windows 95/98 shutdown screen. So now, when you click on the LOGOUT icon to logout of your session, we do ask that you click on the RESTART option and not SHUT DOWN. Selecting SHUT DOWN will indeed shut down the computer and before the next person can use the computer, they will have to restart the computer. If you select RESTART, then the computer reboots to the login screen and is ready for the next user.

2. NEW LAB IS OPEN

The new computer lab is open and available for students. This lab is conveniently located on the fifth floor in room 545. This lab has 8 brand new desktop computers, 1 laser printer, and 8 connections available for students to connect their laptops to the network (a nice place to print something off quickly).

3. NEW VIRUS DETECTION SOFTWARE

Late last semester the virus protection software was updated to clean off a new virus that is transferred in Microsoft Word. As always, it is a good idea to update the virus protection software on your personal computer periodically to catch any new viruses that are out there. Since we have a site license to McAfee Virus scan, all students can install copies of this software onto their computers for free. (Thus, no excuse not to do it!)

There are two ways to install the software on your personal computer:

I. Laptop that connects to Kentnet:

  1. Click on your KENTNET icon;
  2. Select STUDENT SERVICES | CENTER FOR LAW AND COMPUTERS | VIRUS DETECTION/REMOVAL;
  3. Select INSTALL MCAFEE VERSION 4.
  4. If you have a previous version of McAfee on your computer, the installation program will ask if you want to remove the old version before installation of the newer version. Answer YES to this question.
  5. Follow the remaining prompts on the screen (select all of the defaults).
II. Desktop at home or laptop without KENTNET access:
  1. Go to Room 775 and borrow the MCAFEE Version 4 software to install on your machine. There are a limited number of software copies available, thus there is a 24 hour loan period. (We also have the program on a set of diskettes, if you don't have a CD-ROM drive.)

Online Student Directory
The Student Directory is now available online! You can see it at http://ck.kentlaw.edu/directory/index.html. The Directory includes everyone that did not submit a privacy form to the Registrar. Also, it is currently only available within the building to protect your privacy.
You can also reach the Student Directory by going to Chicago Kent's Internal Web Page and choosing Student Directory under Administrative Resources.

The CLC main office is in room 775 and our hours are:
  Monday - Thursday 8:30 AM - 6 PM
Friday 8:30 AM - 5 PM
When you have a question or need help, please email us at HELPDESK. HELPDESK is your main link to computer support. When your message is received, one of our Customer Service staff members will respond to you at their earliest convenience. If your email is inaccessible, you can also reach us at 6-5300, or stopping by room 775.

STUDENT PRINTING

DEADLINE to pay Fall ' 98 Printing Balances
Students with printing balances for the Fall ' 98 semester have until MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1999, to pay their balance at the BURSAR's office, Room 290. Failure to pay by MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1999, will result in network rights being discontinued until payment in full is received. Questions should be directed to TMICKEY@KENTNET, Theda Mickey, Manager, Customer Service, Center for Law and Computers.

Student Printing Spring ' 99 Semester
Student printing for the Spring ' 99 semester begins Monday, January 18, 1999, and will continue to accumulate through Sunday, May 23, 1999. Each enrolled student receives 400 complimentary pages. Additional pages are charged at $.05/page.

May Graduates
May ' 99 graduates must pay their printing account in full prior to Commencement, Sunday, May 23, 1999. Unpaid balance will result in the Registrar holding the diploma until account is paid in full.

Answers to some of the most commonly asked questions of the CLC:

  1. What is the website address to get my grades?

  2. What do I do if I can't find my pin number, or if my pin number is not working?
    • Send an email to oracle@chicagokent.kentlaw.edu.

  3. Where can I find initial class assignments for the Spring 99 semester?

  4. When will we receive our new set of 400 pages for printing?
    • New print accounts for the Spring 99 semester will be effective Monday, January 18.

  5. How can I check my printing balance?
    • To check student balance within the LAW SCHOOL on Windows 95 computers: i.e. email stations, and lab computers:
From the Kentnet Menu select STUDENT SERVICES
Then select CENTER FOR LAW AND COMPUTERS
Then select STUDENT PRINTING and the "current semester". This will pull up your individual account.

  6. How can I get a credit on my account for printing problems?
    • Please take all problem pages to Theda Mickey, Room 711. NO credit will be issued without presenting the pages in question.

  7. Some of the printing is for a Professor, for Moot Court Competition, for a student organization, etc. Can I get a credit to my account for these pages?
    • Yes. This is the procedure to follow:
      1) print a copy of your most current printing account, (See above question: How can I check my printing balance?)
      2) circle or hi-light and total the # of pages of the jobs that pertain to work performed for the organization, professor, moot court competition, etc.
      3) obtain advisor, professor, etc. signature and account # to be charged,
      4) bring the signed printout to Theda Mickey in Room 711. Those pages will be deducted from your account.

The remaining balance is the responsibility of the student who has two weeks into the following semester to pay off the balance. Each student with a balance will receive an email stating a specified date and time that payment in full must be received. If payment is not received by the specified date, network rights will be terminated until full payment is received.

FYI: Network Maintenance

Regular general maintenance of the network is necessary to ensure greater performance, both in terms of speed and the prevention of any serious problems. To achieve these goals, the Center for Law and Computers will periodically take down the network to perform this maintenance. We've scheduled the maintenance on a monthly basis, for only 1.5 hours on days and at times to inconvenience the least amount of users.

Here are the dates that we will be taking the network down. On these days, the network will not be available between 5:30am and 7:00am.
