New Virus Protection version 4.0.45

As always, it is a good idea to update the virus protection software on your personal computer periodically to catch any new viruses that are out there. Since we have a site license to McAfee Virus scan, all students can install copies of this software onto their computers for free. (Thus, no excuse not to do it!)

To install the latest version, go to Room 775 and borrow the MCAFEE version 4.0.45 software to install on your machine. There are a limited number of CD's available, thus there is a 24 hour loan period. After you install the latest version, you need to scan your machine for viruses. This is very important because the program does not automatically do this. To scan your machine, go to Start - Programs - Mcafee Virus Scan. The default is automatically set to scan Program files only, so make sure you select ALL Files, then click on scan now. The scan will take about 10 minutes, depending on how many files you have.

You may have noticed disruptions or delays in emails sent over WEBMAIL or if you use an email program that uses the POP3 or IMAP protocols. Essentially, these three methods of sending/receiving email rely on the stability of the internet. About two weeks ago, Hurricane Hugo damaged significant parts of the East coast, disrupting Internet communication and thus some of our internet email delivery. Recovery is still underway and we are addressing the problem as our highest priority. Rest assured, no one's email has been LOST, it is merely being delayed at some times and at some points.

In the meantime, please be patient with your email system. We have found that email clients such as NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR work more efficiently if you do not click on SEND/RECEIVE. You may want to reduce the time that your program automatically check's Kent's network for mail. We've found this solves many problems.

We will keep you posted if we have any further information regarding this problem.

Thank you for your patience.

FYI: Network Maintenance

Regular general maintenance of the network is necessary to ensure greater performance, both in terms of speed and the prevention of any serious problems. To achieve these goals, the Center for Law and Computers will periodically take down the network to perform this maintenance. We've scheduled the maintenance on a monthly basis, for only 1.5 hours on days and at times to inconvenience the least amount of users.

Here are the dates that we will be taking the network down. On these days, the network will not be available between 5:30am and 7:00am.
