Printing on KENTNET

Equipment:

The principle printers in the KENTNET system are Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 8000N Printers. There is one printer in each lab, which is set up as the default printer when you sign on in that lab.

Individual Student Printing Accounts

The CLC is in the process of upgrading the print accounting system. A notice will be sent via e-mail and posted to the Web describing how to use the print accounting system once the user interface has been completed. What follows here are the policies that will be implemented when that new system is initiated.

Each student receives 400 pages of printing per semester. Any printing past 400 pages will be charged to your student printing account at 5¢¢ per page. You must settle your student account with the BURSAR'S OFFICE before receiving your 400 page allotment for the following semester. Students with outstanding balances will have their Kentnet accounts deactivated until the balance is paid.

If you have printed work for a faculty member, print out a detailed balance and have the faculty member sign for their pages. Present the signed balance sheet to the HELPDESK in the Center for Law and Computers (Room 525). Your print account will be credited accordingly.

LEXIS-NEXIS, WESTLAW, and eLOISe printing are automatically directed to the Document Center printer. Payment for Document Center printouts is required when you pick them up. Graduating students with a delinquent printing balance will NOT receive their diplomas until the accounts are paid in full.

Please report any problems with printers or printing by E-mail to HELPDESK.

E-Mail Stations

The E-Mail stations located throughout the building are intended to allow students convenient and quick access to E-Mail and to the Record. Please be considerate to your fellow students when using these stations. If you want to compose many or long E-Mails, or browse the Internet at length, please use one of the computer labs in the library. Thank you for your cooperation.

NEW VIRUS DETECTION SOFTWARE - Version 4.0.34

As always, it is a good idea to update the virus protection software on your personal computer periodically to catch any new viruses that are out there. Since we have a volume license to McAfee Virus scan, all students can install copies of this software onto their computers for free. (Thus, no excuse not to do it!)

To install the latest version, go to Room 525 and borrow the MCAFEE version 4.0.34 software to install on your machine. There are a limited number of CD's available, thus there is a 24 hour loan period. After you install the latest version, you need to scan your machine for viruses. This is very important because the program does not automatically do this. To scan your machine, go to Start - Programs - Mcafee Virus Scan. The default is automatically set to scan Program files only, so make sure you select ALL Files, then click on scan now. The scan will take about 10 minutes, depending on how many files you have.

Online Student Directory

The Student Directory is now available online! You can see it at http://ck.kentlaw.edu/directory/index.html. The Directory includes everyone that did not submit a privacy form to the Registrar. Also, it is currently only available within the building to protect your privacy.

You can also reach the Student Directory by going to Chicago Kent's Internal Web Page and choosing Student Directory under Administrative Resources.

FYI: Network Maintenance

Regular general maintenance of the network is necessary to ensure greater performance, both in terms of speed and the prevention of any serious problems. To achieve these goals, the Center for Law and Computers will periodically take down the network to perform this maintenance. Every attempt is made to schedule maintenance at times that inconvenience the least amount of users.

Electronic Casebook Availability

If your class has an electronic text, you will be notified by email as soon as it is available.

The email will include specific instructions how to download and install the texts. Some of these texts require you to purchase the printed versions of the materials as well (the electronic texts are available at no cost) so you will have to prove purchase of the printed text in order to gain access to the electronic text. The specific procedure will be detailed in the email letting you know your texts are ready.

Computer Labs

There are three computer labs in the school: one on the ninth floor of the library and two on the seventh floor inside the library. All of the labs feature Pentium II or Pentium III-based machines running Windows 98. We have DOS, Windows 3.1 and Windows 98 programs running on our network. In addition, there are E-mail stations located throughout the building.

From time to time, the law school schedules classes or exams in the labs. At those times, a sign will be posted on the door of the lab. If you have any problems getting onto KENTNET from any computer, call the CLC at extension 6-5300 from any black house phone. House phones are located between the public telephones on every floor.

Lab 900 is on the ninth floor of the library at the west end of the building and has 12 computers. Turn left when you enter the library through the ninth floor entrance. The printer for the ninth floor lab is in Room 986, in the corner of the area.

Lab 700, the large, glass-walled room on the seventh floor of the library, is the largest lab, with 30 computers. This lab is sometimes used for larger research classes and it is always used for exams. LEXIS-NEXIS and WESTLAW representatives conduct office hours in Lab 700. The schedule of their office hours will be posted weekly in the Record. They can help you with online research questions.

Lab 760, also on the seventh floor of the library, is equipped with 20 computers. It is often used for research classes.

Security and Proper Shutdown of Lab Computers

In order to secure your login name and password, it is important to log out completely so that the next individual who sits at that lab computer is prompted at the login screen to enter their own login name and password. To shutdown properly, prior to leaving any of the computer labs, logout and close all programs utilized, click START (located on tool bar in the bottom left corner of the screen) SHUTDOWN | RESTART.
