Network Maintenance: Infrastructure Upgrade July 30, 2010 at 6:00 PM

The network infrastructure which services all network connectivity at the IIT Downtown Campus (DTC), including the core switch, is scheduled to undergo a vital upgrade. This upgrade must occur since the current equipment is obsolete and no longer supported by the manufacturer. Please see the information below for further details.

Due to the complex nature of this upgrade, all computer services will be unavailable beginning 6:00 pm on Friday, July 30 through 11:00 pm on Saturday, July 31. There will be additional intermittent outages throughout Sunday, August 1 as related work and testing of systems is completed throughout the building as described below.

Note: The Downtown Campus Library will be closed on Saturday, July 31.

What services will be unavailable?
Impacted services will include, but are not limited to:

  • Internet access
  • Remote access services
  • Email services (including Webmail)
  • Network file shares (H: drive, P: drive, etc )

Why is the upgrade taking place at this time?
This timeframe was chosen since the summer term just ended so there will be minimal disruption to student services. It also provides the DTC with additional network security to be incorporated within the infrastructure well before the start of the fall term and facilitates other service upgrades that will be coming soon.

Why does the network need to be down so long?
There are several components to the network such as routers, switches, servers, printers, wireless access points, etc. We will need to ensure that the main core switch is functioning correctly. Rigorous testing will be conducted during this period to ensure all services and systems are restored and functioning.

The upgrade will be performed in two phases:

Phase 1: Beginning the evening of Friday, July 30, Downtown Campus IT staff will begin working around the clock to replace the main network switch which services the entire building. Additional work will then be done to incorporate the network equipment on each floor into the newly upgraded environment. The staff will then verify that all related equipment properly re-connects to the upgraded environment. This includes routers, switches, wireless access points, servers, printers and as well as internet connectivity.

Phase 2: Once all work and testing related to the infrastructure upgrade has been completed, Downtown Campus IT staff will reorganize/rearrange equipment in the 7th Floor NCC data center room in order to make the most efficient use of rack space and power. Intermittent service outages are expected to occur during this phase as equipment within the data center is moved or re-cabled.

All work will be completed with network connectivity and services fully available the morning of Monday, August 2, when the building opens.

Thank you for your patience while we complete this important upgrade.

New myIIT Password Reset Tool

IT Office of Technology Services (OTS) has rolled out a new tool for the myIIT portal that allows individuals who forget their portal password to reset it themselves, rather than going through the OTS Support Desk.  This new tool requires individuals to set up two secret questions and answers.  When the questions are answered correctly, users will have the ability to reset their own password and access the portal.

The tool was activated on at 9:30 pm on Friday, January 8.  Upon logging into the portal for the first time after activation, users will be prompted to set their secret questions before accessing their myIIT account.

Users who have already set up their portal secret questions will not need to take any action.

Adding this level of security will allow users to access IIT technology services 24/7, even if they forget their password. Contact OTS with any questions.

IIT Print Channel is for MC printing only and not for use at the DTC

Please note that student printing at Chicago-Kent is separate from the process used on Main Campus - you should not use the IIT Printing Channel in the my.iit.edu portal. If you have used the channel to add money for printing, please contact Nancy Caruson at caruson@iit.edu for a refund. At Chicago-Kent, students receive credit for 400 pages worth of free printing per semester; any printing beyond 400 pages is charged at a rate of $0.07 per page.  All Chicago-Kent printing – both free and charged – is managed by the Law School’s own printing system. You can add money to your account at the station located in the 9th floor photocopy room in the Library.
