Orientation and computer technology at Chicago-Kent

Chicago-Kent College of Law has undertaken as its ongoing mission an effort to integrate technology with a law school education. This mission is twofold: 1) using technology in the three to four years of law school itself to help learn legal concepts and complete school projects; and 2) familiarizing students with the technology that they will be faced with in the practice of law in the 21st century. For these reasons, Chicago-Kent requires all first year law students to own a computer to complete their law school education.

Laptop Configuration:

A vital part of your preparation for classes is the Laptop Configuration session. This session ensures that you are able to access Chicago-Kent's network resources and your new email account.

If you use a laptop/notebook, you will need to configure it with Chicago-Kent's system settings before you have access to C-K's internal network resources. These special sessions are being held to assist you with that process. The session will begin promptly at the scheduled time. To ensure that your laptop is set-up with everything you need, you should attend one of these sessions. Please plan on being in attendance for the full length of the scheduled time.

Please bring the following items with you to the configuration session:

Laptop computer and AC power supply
Any Windows OS, Mac OS or other setup related CD's that came with the laptop
Any CD's for any applications that came installed from the factory or were installed by you - please include any Office CD's you may have obtained from the CLC Helpdesk prior to these sessions (Note: we will give you a copy of Office 2007 for Windows or Mac Office 2008)
CD/DVD ROM drive if applicable
Ethernet cable
Any CD's for any Microsoft applications that are installed on the laptop

Technology Training:

To ensure that you are fully prepared for your studies at Chicago-Kent, a technology training session is set up for you. During this session you will receive instruction regarding:

Accessing Chicago-Kent's network
Using your network folder
Where and how to find important C-K information
Virus Scanning and Hardware Maintenance
Using Microsoft Outlook email services
Email Accounts:
A Chicago-Kent email account will be set-up for you. Your username will be your first initial and last name, no punctuation or spaces (i.e. Jane Student = jstudent) and your password will be the last six digits of your Banner ID, no punctuation or spaces (i.e. 999999).

Changing Your Password:

To change your password:
Access Webmail (http://webmail.kentlaw.edu) from your internet browser, (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome) and log in using your Chicago-Kent username and password
Select option and scroll to the bottom of the page
Select CHANGE PASSWORD
When prompted, enter your username, password and desired new password
When successfully completed, you will receive the message PASSWORD SUCCESSFULLY CHANGED
Your new password takes effect immediately and will give you access to your email account and network files

Obtaining Microsoft Office 2007 or Mac Office 2008:

Each new student entering in Fall 2010 (Day and Evening divisions) will receive MS Office 2007 or Mac Office 2008, compliments of the Center for Law and Computers during the orientation registration process. New myIIT Password Reset Tool

IT Office of Technology Services (OTS) has rolled out a new tool for the myIIT portal that allows individuals who forget their portal password to reset it themselves, rather than going through the OTS Support Desk.  This new tool requires individuals to set up two secret questions and answers.  When the questions are answered correctly, users will have the ability to reset their own password and access the portal.

The tool was activated on at 9:30 pm on Friday, January 8.  Upon logging into the portal for the first time after activation, users will be prompted to set their secret questions before accessing their myIIT account.

Users who have already set up their portal secret questions will not need to take any action.

Adding this level of security will allow users to access IIT technology services 24/7, even if they forget their password. Contact OTS with any questions.

IIT Print Channel is for MC printing only and not for use at the DTC

Please note that student printing at Chicago-Kent is separate from the process used on Main Campus - you should not use the IIT Printing Channel in the my.iit.edu portal. If you have used the channel to add money for printing, please contact Nancy Caruson at caruson@iit.edu for a refund. At Chicago-Kent, students receive credit for 400 pages worth of free printing per semester; any printing beyond 400 pages is charged at a rate of $0.07 per page.  All Chicago-Kent printing – both free and charged – is managed by the Law School’s own printing system. You can add money to your account at the station located in the 9th floor photocopy room in the Library.

Maintenance Activities

The Center for Law and Computers applies security patches, stability fixes, and other software updates on either the first or second Thursday morning of each month. Work is conducted during the early morning hours and timed to complete before the Downtown Campus building opens. Periodic interruptions to Chicago-Kent services may occur during this time as servers and other key computers are rebooted.

The IIT Office of Technology Services (OTS) conducts various maintenance activities weekly from 9:30pm on Friday through 8:00am on Saturday. Periodic service interruptions of IIT-hosted services may occur during this time.
