A message from the CLC department

To assure your experience at Chicago-Kent College of Law is a positive one, the Center for Law and Computers is available to assist you with your computer and technical questions and concerns. You can reach a member of our staff by calling (312) 906-5300 (6-5300 house phones) or sending an email to helpdesk@kentlaw.edu. We are located in suite 540 if you would like to stop by our office.

Internet Explorer (IE) security breach

Microsoft has discovered a security hole in Internet Explorer 9 and lower versions that has the potential to deliver a Trojan horse to your computer if you point your Internet Explorer browser to a compromised site. Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP computers can be affected. The CLC would like to advise users to exercise caution when visiting websites and to avoid clicking on suspicious links or opening email messages from unfamiliar senders.

Microsoft is actively monitoring the situation and has stated that this has impacted a small number of computers. They plan on pushing out an out-of-cycle Windows patch to temporarily fix the critical Internet Explorer flaw revealed earlier this week.

More information can be found at the Microsoft support site here.

If there are any questions or concerns please contact the Help Desk at 312-906-5327 or email pchelp@kentlaw.iit.edu.

IIT-565 wireless name to be replaced with IIT-Secure

The CLC will be phasing out the current IIT-565 network and introducing the IIT-Secure network. Using the IIT-Secure network you will be able to connect seamlessly to the wireless networks at the Downtown Campus and the Main Campus without any added configuration. We will be communicating the termination of IIT-565 soon. Please check out our wireless instructions in order to access the IIT-Secure network located here http://kentlaw.iit.edu/current-students/information-technology/instructions-tutorials/wireless-network.

802.11a and 802.11b WiFi support now disabled for improved overall wireless performance on campus

Beginning October 15, 2012 the IIT Downtown Campus network will no longer support wireless network connections which use the 802.11a and 802.11b wireless networking specifications. These specifications date from 1999 and were replaced in later years with the 802.11g and 802.11n specifications. Wireless connections which use the newer and faster specifications will remain available on the DTC network.

Nearly all WiFi-capable devices manufactured since 2004 are able to connect with the 802.11g or 802.11n wireless networking protocols that will remain active in the Downtown Campus. Older devices which do not directly support 802.11g and 802.11n can usually be made to connect with these newer protocols through the use of a small USB WiFi adapter. Please stop by the Help Desk in Room 540 if you have any concerns about the wireless capabilities of your laptop or mobile device.

Security updates and Spam

Security updates
The web world has increasingly become a target for malicious malware and viruses. Open vulnerabilities in operating systems and browsers are just two of the many ways computing devices come under attack. Please perform critical Microsoft or Apple software updates. Also, keep your Anti-virus software up-to-date. Periodically run scans to check for viruses and malware to protect your system from any harm.

Spam
CLC will never ask for confidential information such as usernames and passwords via email. Please do not click or respond to any such emails as these typically are embedded with viruses.

When in doubt please contact the Helpdesk immediately!

myIIT Password Reset Tool

IT Office of Technology Services (OTS) has rolled out a new tool for the myIIT portal that allows individuals who forget their portal password to reset it themselves, rather than going through the OTS Support Desk.  This new tool requires individuals to set up two secret questions and answers.  When the questions are answered correctly, users will have the ability to reset their own password and access the portal.

The tool was activated on at 9:30 pm on Friday, January 8.  Upon logging into the portal for the first time after activation, users will be prompted to set their secret questions before accessing their myIIT account.

Users who have already set up their portal secret questions will not need to take any action.

Adding this level of security will allow users to access IIT technology services 24/7, even if they forget their password. Contact OTS with any questions.

IIT Print Channel is for MC printing only and not for use at the DTC

Please note that student printing at Chicago-Kent is separate from the process used on Main Campus - you should not use the IIT Printing Channel in the my.iit.edu portal. If you have used the channel to add money for printing, please contact Nancy Caruson at caruson@iit.edu for a refund.

At Chicago-Kent, students receive credit for 400 pages worth of free printing per semester; any printing beyond 400 pages is charged at a rate of $0.07 per page.

All Chicago-Kent printing – both free and charged – is managed by the Law School’s own printing system. You can add money to your account at the station located in the 9th floor photocopy room in the Library.
