Sponsor/Title: ABA Commission on Law and
Aging, Law and Aging Student Essay Contest.
Topic: Submissions should address any public
policy or practice issue in serving socially, economically,
or physically vulnerable older persons.
Prizes: First place, $5,000; second place,
$3,000; third place, $1,000.
Deadline: Submissions must be received
by April 1, 2003.
Sponsor/Title: International Association
of Defense Counsel 2003 Legal Writing Contest.
Topic: Any subject of practical concern to lawyers
engaged in the defense or management of the defense of civil
litigation, such as, for examples, relevant aspects of tort
law, insurance law, civil procedure, evidence, damages, alternative
dispute resolution procedures, and professional ethics.
Prizes: First place, $2,000; second place,
$1,000; third place, $500.
Deadline: Submissions must be postmarked
on or before April 16, 2003.

for Excellence in Legal Writing.
Topic: Any topic on a legal subject.

Defense Fund 2002-2003 Law Student Essay Contest.
Topic: The subject of the contest is "the
right of the individual to keep and bear arms as a federally
protected right."

Sponsor/Title: Pacific Legal Foundation,
Fourth Program for Judicial Awareness Writing Competition.
Topic: One of the following: (1) Discuss the
state of regulatory takings law after Tahoe-Sierra Preservation
Council v. Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, focusing especially
on the status of the temporary takings doctrine and the per
se takings rule articulated in Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal
Council. (2) In light of the Supreme Court's 2001 decision
in Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County v. Army Corps
of Engineers (SWANCC), what are the statutory limitations
of the Corps of Engineers authority to regulate the use of
private property under the Clean Water Act? (3) In Loggerhead
Turtle v. County Council of Volusia County, 148 F.3d 1231
(11th Cir. 1998), and other cases, environmentalists have
sought to establish that state and local governments can be
held liable under the Endangered Species Act for failing to
adequately regulate private activities. Critique this theory,
paying particular attention to the purpose and intent of the
Act and to any federalism issues raised by the demand that
states enforce the Act in a particular manner.
Prizes: First place, $5,000; first runner-up,
$3,000; second runner-up, $1,500.

Notre Dame Law School 10th Annual Feminist Jurisprudence
Writing Competition.
Topic: Any issue within the category of feminist
jurisprudence.
Prizes: First place, $1,000.
Deadline: The deadline for submissions
is June 1, 2003.
Sponsor/Title: ABA Section of Real Property,
Probate and Trust Law, Jacques T. Schlenger Student Writing
Contest.
Topic: Essays should be on a current topic dealing
with real property, probate, or trust law.
Prizes: First place, $2,000, membership
in the Section, and trip to Section's fall meeting; second
place, $500; third place, $250.
Deadline: Submissions must be received
no later than June 15, 2003.
Sponsor/Title: American Society of Composers, Authors
and Publishers (ASCAP) Nathan Burkan Memorial Competition.
Topic: Any aspect of copyright law.
Prizes: First place, $600, second place, $250,
at each participating law school.
Deadline: Entries must be certified to the Society
no later than June 30, 2003.
Other Information: Two winning papers will be
chosen, and awards given, at each participating law school.
Open to third-year (or, with permission, second-year) law
students. Each school will be responsible for choosing the
winning papers. Any Chicago-Kent student interested in submitting
a paper should contact Dean Sowle well in advance of the June
30 deadline.

Law Students.
Topic: The constitutional right to keep and
bear arms.
Prizes: First place, $12,500 toward tuition;
second place, $5,000; third place, $2,500.

on or before July 1, 2003.
Sponsor/Title: American Intellectual Property
Association, Robert C. Watson Competition.
Topic: A subject relating to the protection
of intellectual property.
Prizes: First place, $2,000.
Deadline: Entries must be submitted on
or before July 31, 2003.
