Sponsor/Title: SmithAmundsen Excellence in Legal Writing Award (for first-year Chicago-Kent students).
Prizes: First place, $5,000.
Deadline: May 3, 2010, 5:00pm.
Eligibility: This award is available to first-year students at Chicago-Kent whose personal or family background, life, or cultural and/or ethnic experience contributes to a more diverse environment at Chicago-Kent and in the legal community.

Other Information: A committee of faculty members from the Chicago-Kent Legal Writing department will select up to five appellate briefs submitted by first-year students who fit the above criteria. Authorship of the briefs will not be known to committee members during the initial round of review. Student curriculum vitae, including work history, community service, and extracurricular involvement and leadership, will be considered when selecting the winning applicant. Representatives from SmithAmundsen will choose the winning applicant, with input from Dean Krent. The winner of this award will be announced after the end of the Spring semester. The award is non-renewable.

Applications should be submitted electronically or in hard copy and should include: (1) A cover letter addressed to SmithAmundsen describing your personal qualities which contribute to a more diverse environment at Chicago-Kent and in the legal community; (2) One copy of the rewrite of your first-year appellate brief with your name on it and a second copy of the same brief minus your name, if sumitted via hard copy; and (3) A curriculum vitae or resume.

If, for some reason, you are unable to submit your application to Alice Curry personally, please send it via email to acurry@kentlaw.edu, after which you will receive confirmation that your applicaiton has been received.


Sponsor/Title: The Judge John R. Brown Scholarship Foundation/Brown Award for Excellence in Legal Writing.
Topic: No limitation on topic except that the submission must be on a legal subject.
Prizes: First place, $10,000.
Deadline: May 14, 2010.
Other information: Submissions must be nominated by a law school faculty member.

Sponsor/Title: International Association of Defense Counsel Legal Writing Contest.
Topic: A subject of practical concern to lawyers engaged in the defense or management of the defense of civil litigation, such as relevant aspects of tort law, insurance law, civil procedure, evidence, damages, alternative dispute resolution procedures, and professional ethics.
Prizes: First place, $2,000; second place, $1,000; third place, $500.
