*Congratulations to Michael Brandt (class of 2011) for winning first place in the Santa Clara University School of Law's Centennial Student Writing Competition.
*Congratulations to Keith R. Syverson (class of 2011) for winning first place in the 2010 Chicago-Kent Institute for Law and the Humanities Paper Competition, and to Jerry D. Thomas (class of 2011) for winning second place in the competition.


Sponsor/Title: Association of Securities and Exchange Commission Alumni (ASECA) Securities Law Writing Competition.
Topic: Any subject in the field of securities law.
Prizes: First place, $5,000; second place, $3,000; third place, $2,000.
Deadline: November 18, 2011.

Sponsor/Title: Grammy Foundation Entertainment Law Initiative Legal Writing Competition.
Topic: A compelling legal issue facing the music industry and a proposed solution.
Prizes: First place, $5,000; second place (four awards given), $1,500.

Sponsor/Title:  2011-2012 Louis Jackson National Student Writing Competition in Employment and Labor Law (co-sponsored by the Institute for Law and the Workplace and the Jackson Lewis Firm).
Topic:  Papers may address any topic relating to the law governing the workplace, such as employment law, labor law, employee benefits, or employment discrimination.  Only the first two submissions per law school will be accepted as entries for consideration. Submissions must be the law student author's own work and must not be submitted for publication elsewhere. Authors must have completed or be currently taking course work in employment or labor law, and must be enrolled in an accredited law school during the Fall 2011 semester. There are formatting guidelines that must be followed. For questions, contact Professor Martin H. Malin by email at mmalin@kentlaw.edu.
Prizes:  One top honors award of $3,000 and two $1,000 awards will be presented to the top three entries.  In addition to the cash awards, the top three entries will be published on the Institute for Law and the Workplace website. (Electronic versions of winning papers will be required).
Deadline:  Submissions are due no later than Tuesday, January 17, 2012.

Sponsor/Title: American Bar Association Section of International Law/Rona R. Mears Student Writing Competition & Scholarship Awards.
Topic: The Restatement (Third) of the Foreign Relations Law of the United States is being revised. What section or group of related sections of the Restatement should be revised, why, and how?
Prizes: First place and second place, $1,000.
Deadline: January 20, 2012.


Sponsor/Title: Public Justice Foundation Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Contest.
Topic: Are factory farms hog-tying people's rights?
Prizes: First place, $5,000.
Deadline: Intent-to-enter submission deadline is January 31, 2012; essay submission deadline is March 31, 2012.


Sponsor/Title: The American Indian Law Review Writing Competition.
Topic: Any topic concerning American Indian Law.
Prizes: First place, $1,000 and publication of paper; second place, $500; third place, $250.
Deadline: January 31, 2012.


Sponsor/Title: ELI-ABA-NAELS Constitutional Environmental Law Student Writing Competition.
Topic: Any topic addressing recent developments or trends in U.S. environmental law that have a significant constitutional or federalism component.
Prizes: First place, $2,000 and publication of paper.
Deadline: April 13, 2012.


Sponsor/Title: College of Labor and Empllyment Lawyers and American Bar Association Section of Lbor and Employment Law Annual Law Student Writing Competition.
Topic: Any aspect of public or private labor and/or employment law relevant to the American labor and employment bar.
Prizes: The following prizes may be awarded: First place, $1,500; second place, $1,000; third place, $500.
Deadline: May 15, 2012.
