*Congratulations to Michael Brandt (class of 2011) for winning first place in the Santa Clara University School of Law's Centennial Student Writing Competition.
*Congratulations to Keith R. Syverson (class of 2011) for winning first place in the 2010 Chicago-Kent Institute for Law and the Humanities Paper Competition, and to Jerry D. Thomas (class of 2011) for winning second place in the competition.


Sponsor/Title: ABA Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice/Gellhorn-Sargentich Law Student Essay Competition.
Topic: Any topic relating to administrative law.
Prizes: First place, $5,000 and consideration for publication.

Topic: Any topic addressing recent developments or trends in U.S. environmental law that have a significant constitutional or federalism component.
Prizes: First place, $2,000 and publication of paper.

Sponsor/Title: College of Labor and Empllyment Lawyers and American Bar Association Section of Lbor and Employment Law Annual Law Student Writing Competition.
Topic: Any aspect of public or private labor and/or employment law relevant to the American labor and employment bar.
Prizes: The following prizes may be awarded: First place, $1,500; second place, $1,000; third place, $500.
Deadline: May 15, 2012.


Sponsor/Title: International Association of Defense Counsel Legal Writing Contest.
Topic: A subject of practical concern to lawyers engaged in the defense or management of the defense of civil litigation, such as relevant aspects of tort law, insurance law, civil procedure, evidence, damages, alternative dispute resolution procedures, and professional ethics.
Prizes: First place, $2,000; second place, $1,000; third place, $500.

Topic: A legal issue affecting persons struggling with homelessness, mental illness, addiction, or substance abuse.

Sponsor/Title: The American College of Employee Benefits Counsel Writing Competition.
Topic: Any topic in the field of employee benefits law.

Topic: A federal or Illinois health law issue.

Sponsor/Title: The Judge John R. Brown Scholarship Foundation Award for Excellence in Legal Writing.
Topic: Any legal subject.
Prizes: First place, $10,000.
Other information: Submissions must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation by a law school faculty member or legal professional other than the author of the paper.
