2011 Public Interest Awards

I am pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011 Public Interest Law Awards to be honored at our fourth annual Public Interest Awards Night on Thursday, April 21. This year, in addition to the 2011 Marovitz Public Interest Awards, we will also recognize recipients of two new awards, the Public Interest Partner Award and the Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award.

Michael P. Galvin '78 will receive the IIT Alumni Service Award at the 2011 IIT Alumni Awards Luncheon on Friday, April 15. The IIT Alumni Service Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates continuous, selfless commitment to and devoted enthusiasm for the university through involvement in recruitment, support, service, and leadership.

Arrow Chicago-Kent climbs in U.S. News & World Report rankings

IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is slotted at #61 in this year's U.S. News & World Report "Best Law Schools" ranking. Due in part to enhanced recognition of the law school and its flexible evening program, Chicago-Kent jumped from its 2010 rank of 80. Specialty rankings of note include 4th in Trial Advocacy, 10th in Legal Writing, 11th in Part-Time Programs, and 15th in Intellectual Property. Click here to view the full ranking.

 

Arrow Intellectual Property Law Society announces its 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award

The Intellectual Property Law Society (IPLS) is hosting its annual alumni reception on Tuesday, April 26, and will honor Bart A. Lazar ’87, partner at Seyfarth Shaw LLP, with its 2011 Distinguished Alumnus Award in honor of his contributions to the field of intellectual property law and to the Chicago-Kent community.

As a partner at Seyfarth Shaw LLP, Lazar handles copyright, trademark, privacy and new media issues, including advertising, promotion, sweepstakes, marketing, computer software, data use, Internet, employee privacy, cybercrime and entertainment cases. He has dealt with numerous matters before federal and state agencies, including defending the first Internet privacy case brought by the Federal Trade Commission and the first database security breach case brought by the New York Attorney General.

Graduates of the LL.M. program at Chicago-Kent are invited to return to the law school for the International LL.M. 10-Year Anniversary Reunion, May 19-21, 2011. Reconnect with former professors and fellow alumni while enjoying activities at the law school and around the city.

Arrow OyezToday App Offers Easy Search of U.S. Supreme Court Docket

OyezToday AppThe Oyez Project at Chicago-Kent has launched OyezToday, a free iPhone app with information and media related to the current U.S. Supreme Court docket. OyezToday is available through the AppStore, and iPad and Android versions will soon follow.

"OyezToday will appeal to all Supreme Court junkies," said Jerry Goldman, director of the Oyez Project. "Opinions will be available on their smart phones shortly after they are released. Oral arguments and transcripts are a mere tap away within hours of release by the Court. In addition, users can share their interests via Facebook, Twitter, and email," he continued. "Users can download argument audio synchronized to its transcript and search the audio, or they can simply flip, tap, and listen to any portion."

OyezToday rests on the popular Oyez Project, an authoritative collection of Supreme Court audio going back to October 1955. To read the full announcement, click here.

Martha Minow, Dean of Harvard Law School

Martha Minow, Dean of Harvard Law School, is this year’s Chicago-Kent Centennial Visitor. The Chicago-Kent community is invited to attend Dean Minow's public lecture, entitled “In Brown’s Wake: Reassessing the School Equality Landmark,” on April 12 at the law school.

The Centennial Visitor lecture series was inaugurated in fall 1987 as part of a year-long celebration to mark the founding of Chicago College of Law, forerunner of Chicago-Kent, in 1888. Previous lectures have included Hon. Harry T. Edwards, U.S. Court of Appeals for District of Columbia Circuit; Hon. Stephen M. Schwebel of the International Court of Justice in the Hague; and Princeton University Professor Hendrik Hartog.

The dinner will feature special guest speaker Jerry Goldman, director of the Oyez Project. The Oyez Project is a multimedia archive for all audio recorded in the Supreme Court since the installation of a recording system in October 1955, and is now headquartered at Chicago-Kent.

Arrow Chicago-Kent Volunteers with Working Bikes

Chicago-Kent Volunteers

Students, faculty, and staff participated in a day of service at Working Bikes on Saturday, March 26. The Working Bikes Cooperative is a nonprofit that reconditions donated bikes to be used by the needy in the community and abroad. Volunteers collected bikes as part of a bike drive and helped recondition bikes in the Working Bikes warehouse.

Dean Krent hosted dinners with Chicago-Kent alumni in Hong Kong and Shenzhen in March. Alumni learned of new programs in the area including the Taiwan Legal Training Program, which offers continuing education for Chicago-Kent alumni in partnership with the University of Political Science and Law in Beijing (CUPL) and Soochow University in Taipei (SCU).

The Kent Justice Foundation hosted their annual spring auction on March 31. All proceeds from the auction help fund KJF Fellowships for students working unpaid public interest jobs over the summer. Special thanks to alumni who donated items for the auction and/or bid on the auction items!
