Chicago-Kent Celebrates Diversity

This week, the Chicago-Kent community is honoring the law school’s legacy of diversity and inclusion with our annual Diversity Week celebration. Our history reflects these ideals, and the variety of events offered this week demonstrates our continuing commitment.

As always, the support of our alumni is critical to the success of the law school. Yesterday, alumna Lyndsay Markley ’05 spoke to the Society of Women in Law about different strategies female attorneys can use to overcome barriers in the work place. Thursday evening, the Hispanic Latino Law Student Association will honor Judge Edward Arce ’85 for his contributions to the legal profession and the Latino community at their annual Judge's Night celebration. And I am proud to announce that Jorge Ramirez ‘97 will be among the first to welcome the Class of 2015 to the alumni community by giving the keynote address at this year’s Commencement ceremony.

The entire schedule of events for Diversity Week can be found here. I encourage you to attend any of this week’s events, and I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Harold J. Krent
Dean and Professor of Law

Announcing the Eighth Annual Public Interest Award Recipients
Chicago-Kent is pleased to announce the recipients of the Public Interest Awards, which will be presented on Thursday, April 23, at 5 p.m. in the Governor Richard B. Ogilvie Auditorium. This year's Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Award Recipient is Ashlee Highland '00 of CARPLS. The Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award goes to Anne Shaw '95 of Shaw Legal Services, Ltd. Chicago Legal Clinic will receive the Public Interest Partner Award. A reception will follow the awards presentation. Read more about the honorees or RSVP.

Chicago-Kent Wins Two National Trial Competitions
Congratulations to Tracey Harkins ’16, Ann Motto ’16, Gabrielle Romano ’16, and Kendra Spearman ’15 for winning the National Ethics Trial Competition. Their win marks the third time in seven years that a Chicago-Kent team has won this national competition. This makes the second national win of 2015 for a Chicago-Kent trial team. Earlier this month, Emily Schroeder ’15 and Nicollete Ward ’16 won the 40th annual National Trial Competition. U.S. News & World Report ranks Chicago-Kent’s Trial Advocacy Program as fourth in the country. Read more about the National Ethics Trial Competition champions or the 40th Annual National Trial Competition champions.

Best Lawyers magazine features Professor Lori Andrews
In an article titled Mother of Invention, Best Lawyers describes the scholarship of Chicago-Kent Distinguished Professor of Law Lori Andrews, who studies the intersection of technological innovations and ethical considerations. Andrews is also the director of the Institute for Science, Law and Technology.

Professor Richard Gonzalez Named Director of Clinical Education
As the new Director of Clinical Education, Professor Gonzalez will oversee Chicago-Kent’s clinical program, the only fee-generating in-house law office within a law school, and the largest clinical program in the nation. Read more about Professor Gonzalez or the clinic.

Now Accepting Alumni Award Nominations
The Chicago-Kent Alumni Awards honor alumni who have made significant contributions to the law school and/or the legal community, while raising funds for the Chicago-Kent Alumni Board Scholarship Fund. Nominations will be accepted until May 22, 2015. Read more about the awards, submit a nomination, or see past award recipients.

Encourage Your Firm to Participate in On-Campus Interviewing Next Fall
If the education you received at Chicago-Kent prepared you well, encourage your firm to participate in On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) this fall. For more information on OCI, contact the Office of Career Services by calling (312) 906-5200 or emailing kentcso@kentlaw.iit.edu.

Chicago-Kent Is Calling...Be Sure to Answer Your Phone
Chicago-Kent's annual phonathon program is under way, and representatives will be calling alumni and friends of the law school to encourage donations to Chicago-Kent. Whether you are renewing your gift or making a first time donation, your support directly impacts the lives of Chicago-Kent students. You can also give online.
