Curriculum Innovation at Chicago-Kent

As law schools around the country seek to adapt to the challenges of producing practice-ready attorneys in this ever-changing legal market, Chicago-Kent is once again at the forefront of curricular innovation. This fall, Chicago-Kent will introduce two new programs, 1L Your Way, and the Praxis Program, which are designed to enhance experiential learning opportunities available to our students.

The Praxis Program is geared toward students who are interested in embracing a practice or experience-based course of study. The program capitalizes on the robust skills offerings already in place at Chicago-Kent, and new graduates who complete the Praxis certificate signal to the marketplace that they have received significant exposure to the attributes of what makes for successful lawyering, whether project management, deft client counseling, or effective use of technology.

Meanwhile, the “1L Your Way” program has already begun to receive outstanding reviews from the legal community, and was recently profiled in both the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and the National Law Journal. 1L’s who enter in the fall will be able to defer a traditional first-year course in favor of taking either an approved, upper-division elective course or a unique rotation through three clinics at the school. Students who enter with a practice area in mind will benefit from early exposure to their specialization, and those who do not will be able to refine their career interests by gaining exposure to diverse areas of law practice through the clinical rotation.

You may read more about the 1L Your Way and Praxis programs on the Chicago-Kent website, and I thank the many alumni who have worked with faculty to shape these exciting initiatives.

Sincerely,

Harold J. Krent
Dean and Professor of Law
