Chicago-Kent College of Law: Alumni E-Brief
Alumni E-Brief
Dean Harold J. Krent

From the Dean

Happy New Year!

As we welcome in another year, I would like to take this time to thank you for your continued support of Chicago-Kent College of Law. There are many ways to participate and benefit your alma mater. Alumni volunteers play a vital role in the success of our academic and extracurricular programs.  Below are just some of the key opportunities:

  • Access2Practice: This summer, we are rolling out an enhanced legal externship program, Access2Practice.  To succeed in this market, our students need to develop the experience and skills that employers are demanding. Moreover, they need to develop a web of contacts as early as possible. To that end, I have guaranteed an externship opportunity to every interested 1L student this summer. You can help.

Please consider offering an unpaid externship this summer over the 8-week summer session, May 23-July 14, 2011. The experience should be invaluable to the student and enjoyable (let us hope!) for you. Similar to our other externships, the for-credit opportunity will consist of fieldwork, which would be supervised by you or one of your colleagues, and a classroom component.

If you are interested in providing an externship opportunity for a student this summer, please complete the Externship Interest Form by February 1

  • Public Interest Award Nominations are open: Each year, the Alumni Association celebrates alumni who devote their careers to the public good and carry  on the tradition of Judge Abe.  Please nominate a fellow alumnus or alumna  for The Honorable Abraham Lincoln Marovitz ‘25 Public Interest Law Award. Alumni working in the public interest sector who have graduated in the last 15 years are eligible. Nominations are accepted until Friday, February 4.

  • 2011 US Supreme Court Group Swearing-In: Join us in Washington, DC on May  23, to be sworn-in as a member of the US Supreme Court Bar. Reserve your spot today!

Also, if you are interested in volunteering time to Chicago-Kent, consider programs such as the Alumni Ambassadors Program and the Alumni Advisor Network, which take a small amount of time yet can make a significant difference for students and the law school. Explore all our volunteer opportunities at www.kentlaw.edu/alumni/volunteer

My best wishes to you for a happy and healthy New Year.

Sincerely,

Harold J. Krent
Dean and Professor of Law

Get Involved: Serve as an Alumni Ambassador

Help us recruit the best and brightest law students to Chicago-Kent by serving as an Alumni Ambassador.

Beginning in February, Alumni Ambassadors contact admitted students who haven’t confirmed their attendance to Chicago-Kent in the fall. Ambassadors introduce the school through the eyes of an alumnus and answer any questions from potential students. Your experiences and memories can have a profound influence on a potential student! This interaction gives students a one-on-one experience to make informed decisions about law school.

Contact with admitted students occurs during February through April 2011. Become an Ambassador by February 1. Learn more about the program!

arrow Oyez Project comes to Chicago-Kent

Chicago-Kent is the new headquarters of the Oyez Project, a multimedia archive that aims to be a complete, searchable and authoritative source for all audio recorded in the Supreme Court of the United States since the installation of a recording system in 1955. The site's archive of digitized arguments is keyword searchable and offers snippets from case transcripts that link to the corresponding full audio.

Founded and directed by political scientist Jerry Goldman, the site also provides written summaries of Supreme Court cases and holdings, detailed biographies and voting records of Supreme Court justices, links to written opinions, and a virtual tour of the Supreme Court building.

The site will soon make its content more widely accessible to mobile users via apps for iPads and handheld devices. iPhone apps for selected content are already available. Chicago-Kent plans to utilize the research of its students and faculty in further content development, capitalizing on its faculty's broad-based scholarship on the U.S. Supreme Court, the justice system and the Constitution.
