ALUMNI PROFILE
George Zelcs '79

George Zelcs ’79, Member at Korein Tillery,
recently made a leadership gift to Fueling Innovation: The Campaign for IIT, granting two Chicago-Kent centers the opportunity to fuel innovations at the law school and in the law. His gift launched the Center for Empirical Studies of Intellectual Propery (CESIP)--the first of its kind in the nation--and will allow the Insitute on the Supreme Court of the United States (ISCOTUS) and the Oyez Project to expand their audience.

George serves on the Chicago-Kent Board of Overseers and on the Chicago-Kent ISCOTUS Advisory Board. He is pictured above at Chicago-Kent's 125th Anniversary Gala.

From the Dean

Dean Harold J. Krent

Center for Empirical Studies of Intellectual Property

This spring, thanks to a generous gift from alumnus George Zelcs ’79, we launched the Center for Empirical Studies of Intellectual Property (CESIP), the first academic center of its kind in the nation, which promotes the application of quantitative and qualitative social science methods to studying important questions about innovation and creativity.

Since joining the faculty in 2009, Professor Christopher Buccafusco and Professor David Schwartz, the Center's co-directors, have established themselves as two of the leading empirical scholars of IP law publishing scholarly research in many leading law reviews including the University of Chicago Law Review, the Michigan Law Review and the Cornell Law Review. With the help of George’s transformational gift, Chicago-Kent will be able to expand its reputation as one of one of the leading players at the forefront of IP law scholarship. The program is already off to a strong start providing students and faculty fellows with funding for research on IP and innovation, and the center will host its debut academic conference this fall.

George Zelcs’ support of the Center for Empirical Studies of Intellectual Property is just one example of how alumni support can fuel innovation at Chicago-Kent. I want to thank George and more than 900 members of the alumni community who donated to Chicago-Kent this past fiscal year. Our robust and dedicated alumni community creates a truly bright and vibrant future for Chicago-Kent. I hope you all will take advantage of the Young Alumni Summer Social on June 6th, the Trial Advocacy Reunion on June 11th and the last of our CLE Series on Ethics on June 20th to meet each other and stay engaged with us as we embark upon the 2013 school year.

Sincerely,

Harold J. Krent
Dean and Professor of Law
