Dear Alumni:

As we reflect on a fantastic school year and leap into summer, it is always exciting to share with you news about our law school and updates on the work of some of our faculty members. Lori Andrews recently received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to undertake a project that will explore the relationship between nanotechnology and patent law. The purpose of this project is to monitor the extent to which patents related to nanotechnology have been granted, analyze the types of technologies that are described as nanotechnologies by patent applicants or the USPTO, and identify existing and potential problems with the patent system’s response to nanotechnology.

Accolades are in order to Lori for the release of her new novel Sequence (St. Martin’s Press. New York.) Lori is visiting several cities to promote her book, and I recently joined her and many of our alumni from the Washington, D.C. area for an event at the National Museum of Health and Medicine. Please see our calendar below for other booksigning event dates Lori has planned that you may attend, including those to be held in Chicago, Los Angeles and Minneapolis.

Congratulations as well to Ralph Brill, the founder of Chicago-Kent’s comprehensive legal research and writing program, for recently being named the recipient of the 2006 Burton Award for Outstanding Contributions to Legal Writing Education. The Burton awards annually honor members of the legal community who advance “plain, clear, and effective legal expression,” and who avoid “stilted, archaic, and convoluted language” in legal writing.

Finally, Richard Warner, as part of a predominantly UIC team, recently received an IGERT Graduate Program in Computational Transportation Science Grant. The $3 million grant establishes a graduate training program in information technology aspects of transportation. The goal is to investigate the use of tracking technology and sensors to control traffic flow and to send information in real time about traffic to mobile devices such as PDA’s. Richard’s role in the grant is to develop and teach a course on professional ethics and privacy. Moreover, Richard’s casebook on E-commerce will be published this fall.
