From the Dean

Dean Harold J. Krent

Chicago-Kent Celebraties Diversity

Chicago-Kent’s long-standing commitment to fostering diversity within the legal profession began with its inception more than 125 years ago. Our first female student graduated in 1891, and three years later, Ida Platt, only the second African-American woman admitted to practice law in the United States, graduated with the Class of 1894. Since that time, Chicago-Kent has provided the legal profession with generations of highly skilled lawyers from diverse racial and socio-economic backgrounds.

Today, our 888 J.D. students hale from 41 states and 23 countries. Forty-seven percent of our students are women, and 26 percent are students of color. The law school attracts students not only with myriad backgrounds but also interests, as reflected in the approximately 40 student organizations that are active on campus each year. And in 2013, the Council on Legal Education Opportunity recognized Chicago-Kent’s commitment to diversifying the legal profession with its "45 for 45" Award.

This week, the entire Chicago-Kent community will honor our legacy of diversity and inclusion with our annual Diversity Week celebration. I encourage you to attend the Diversity Week activities, especially Friday’s Diversity Week Reception. I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Harold J. Krent
Dean and Professor of Law
