2009 Public Interest Awards and Networking Reception

2nd Annual Public Interest Awards and Networking Reception

(l-r) Laura Kay Jelinek ’95, M. Katherine Roller ‘97, and Cynthia Goldberg Leos ’02, pictured with Dean Hal Krent, were the 2009 recipients of the Marovitz Award.

On Tuesday, April 21, Chicago-Kent honored alumni and students who better our communities through their work and commitment to public interest law. Three outstanding alumni, Laura Kay Jelinek ’95, Cynthia Goldberg Leos ’02, and M. Katherine Roller ‘97, received the 2009 Honorable Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Award.

The event also featured a spotlight on the work of the Chicago-Kent Chapter of the Student Hurricane Network, and students in the Public Interest Law Program were honored for their work and commitment to public interest law.

Following the Awards ceremony, alumni and students socialized at a networking reception. Photos from the event are available on the Alumni Online Community at www.alumni.kentlaw.edu/piawards09.

2009 Marovitz Public Interest Award Recipients

The Honorable Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Awards recognize recently graduated Chicago-Kent alumni who have demonstrated outstanding public interest leadership and who most reflect “the character, life and work of the Honorable Abraham Lincoln Marovitz.”

These endowed awards in memory of Judge Marovitz include monetary stipends to assist the recipients with their educational debt as they work to benefit the public good.

The awards were given out at the Public Interest Awards and Networking Reception on April 21, 2009. We congratulate our 2009 recipients:

The Marovitz Public Interest Law Award

Judge MarovitzChicago-Kent College of Law enjoys a rich tradition of legal activism and public interest work. In honor of one of our most renowned alumni in this field, each year the The Hon. Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Award is given to Chicago-Kent alumni who have graduated in the last 15 years who have demonstrated outstanding public interest leadership, and who most reflect “the character, life and work of the Honorable Abraham Lincoln Marovitz '25.” The award carries with it a significant stipend.

With the salary discrepancy between public interest attorneys and corporate lawyers, few graduates can afford to pursue a career in public interest law given that the average Chicago-Kent student graduates with almost $90,000 in student loans.

The Marovitz Award draws attention to the importance of public interest work, and thereby encourages students to take positions in this area.

Nominations for the 2010 Marovitz Public Interest Law Awards will open in January 2010. Please email alums@kentlaw.edu or (312) 906-5240 with questions.
