Commencement Update:

Greetings from the Office of Alumni Relations! This year's Commencement Ceremony will be held on SUNDAY, MAY 20, at the Arie Crown Theater, McCormick Place. The day includes a formal indoor ceremony at the Theater, followed by a lovely reception at the venue.

If you are still interested in participating in Commencement and you have not yet filled out your forms or picked up your tickets, please email Barbara Matthopoulos immediately.

For those of you already committed to participating in graduation, a few things for you to note:

  • Your caps and gowns will be distributed to you at the Arie Crown when you arrive. Please plan on arriving at 11:45 AM to the E-Hall (just across the main interior doors of the Arie Crown). You will also receive instructions on the commencement proceedings, including the processional. There will be refreshments provided for you. Family members and guests are NOT ALLOWED in the Robing Room. Students will also have the opportunity to contribute to the Class Gift during this time.

  • Theatre doors will open to guests at 1:00 PM. Please note that if your guests arrive with you at 11:45 AM, they will not be seated until the guest doors open at approximately 1:00 PM. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis (general admission). Likewise, all children over the age of two will need a ticket to the ceremony unless they will be sitting on an adult's lap. All strollers should be checked in the coat check as there will be no room for them in the theatre. Coat check will be provided outside the Theatre at no charge.

  • You can park and come up either ramp at the Arie Crown’s Lakeside Garage and be near the Theater. For those being dropped off, either Gates 37 or 31 are convenient. Please click here for additional parking information.

  • Those whose guests requested special assistance, please have your guests be dropped off at Gate 37. There, a rental service will be available for them to turn in an ID, borrow the chair, and then return it. If you have not yet contacted the Office of Alumni Relations about your special assistance needs, please email Barbara Matthopoulos immediately.

  • Please avoid bringing personal belongings with you that you will need to leave in the Robing Room. While we will have security present, we CANNOT be held responsible for lost or stolen items.

  • No noisemakers, horns or other distracting devices are allowed in the Arie Crown Theater. Guests of graduates who are disruptive will be asked to vacate the premises immediately.

  • The ceremony should last approximately one hour and a half. A reception will immediately follow in a reception near the theatre. The ceremony and reception typically last a combined total of three hours.

  • The cocktail reception is open to graduates and all their guests. It is indoors, however if the weather is pleasant, we may move it to a close outdoor area of the Theater.

  • You will have one hour from the time the ceremony ends to take photos in your regalia, after which time you are responsible for returning your cap and gown. Graduates who do not return their caps and gowns by the time announced in the Robing Room prior to the ceremony will be charged a fee.

  • For those of you with Alumni Hooders: Please let your hooder know that a packet is in the mail to them, which will include an outline of the day’s events, as well as other related material.

Good luck with your final week! If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to email the Office of Alumni Relations or call (312) 906-5240.
