Commencement Information for the Class of 2009

Your Commencement-Day Details

Attention Grads: If you received a 2008 tassel with your cap and gown, we apologize! Please bring your tassel to the commencement ceremony where we will replace it with a 2009 tassel.

Your Commencement ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 3:00 PM in the Arie Crown Theater, located inside McCormick Place's Lakeside Center (east of Lake Shore Drive) at 2301 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL.

The ceremony will last approximately 2 hours. A champagne reception will immediately follow outside the theater. The ceremony and reception typically last a combined total of three hours.

For Grads:
Graduates should arrive at the Theatre NO LATER THAN 1:45 PM to line up for the procession. With over 300 graduates, we ask that you please arrive on time to start the ceremony promptly at 3:00 PM. *Please Note: It can take 10 – 15 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the Theater, so please allow extra time when arriving at the venue.

For Guests:
Theater doors open to guests needing special assistance at 1:50 PM, and for all other guests, at 2:00 PM. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis (general admission). All children over the age of two will need a ticket to the ceremony unless they will be sitting on an adult's lap. Please note that all tickets must have a number on the bottom. The commemorative tassel card that you received with your 7 complimentary tickets is a memento for you to keep, not a valid ticket.

Please note, balloons and any other items which will block the view of audience members are not permitted at the Arie Crown theater. All strollers should be checked in at the entrance of Gate 37 for no charge, as no strollers are allowed inside the Theater.

For additional information, please see the FAQ page on the Commencement Portal.

Directions and Parking Information

The Arie Crown Theater is located at 2301 South Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60616. The theater is accessible by both car and public transportation.

Getting to the Theater:
Detailed driving directions are available on the Arie Crown Theater Web site.

Public Transit: Take either the # 3 or 3X King Drive Bus or the # 4X Cottage Grove Bus directly to McCormick Place. CTA buses drop off patrons at the South Building of McCormick Place. Upon entering the South Building, proceed across Lake Shore Drive via the covered walkway to Lakeside Center. The Arie Crown Theater is located on Level 2 of Lakeside Center.

Taxis: After the ceremony, cabs will be available at Gate 30 for your convenience.

Parking, Dropping-Off and Entering the Theater
Parking: We recommend parking in the Lakeside Underground Garage, also known as Lot C, located on the east side of Lake Shore Drive. You will see an entrance to Lot C off Fort Dearborn Road heading north to the Lakeside Center. The parking fee for the day is $16. In the event that the Lakeside Underground Garage is filled, additional parking is available at the 31st Street, Soldier Field and Martin Luther King Parking Lots.

*Please Note: It can take 10 – 15 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the Theater, so please allow extra time when arriving at the venue.

Dropping-Off Passengers:  To drop-off passengers needing special assistance or who cannot walk long distances, please bypass the entrance to Lot C.  Proceed to Gate 37 by following Fort Dearborn Road north through the building.  You will pass Gates 30 – 33 and then watch for a sign to turn right for Gate 37, as you should make the turn before heading back outside. Once you drop passengers off, the road will loop back to the entrance for Lot C.

Gate 37 will also have wheelchairs for guests who need assistance walking to the Theater, as well as a check-area for anyone bringing strollers. Strollers are not allowed into the Theater and should be checked at Gate 37.  Guests who do not require wheelchair assistance, but would like a shorter walk can be dropped off at Gate 31.  For more information on special assistance needs, please click here.

*Please Note:  Gates are NOT accessible once you enter the parking garage.

Entering the Theater: Each guest entering the Theater (except for graduates and children under the age of 2) must present an official Commencement ticket to the ushers.  There is only one entrance to the Theater, accessible from the foyer between Gates 31 and 37.

For more details about accessing the Arie Crown Theater, please visit the Venue Information Page.

Special Assistance Information

Guests with accessible seating tickets (indicated by a pink sticker on the back of the ticket) should enter through Gate 37 to get to the theater. Accessible seating access begins at 1:50 pm. Please look for signs directing you to a special entrance on the side of the theater.

For guests needing special assistance but who did not reserve accessible seating tickets in advance, please enter at Gate 37. Wheelchair service will be available to aid guests getting to the theater. Wheelchair rental is free, however a photo ID is required.

To access Gate 37 bypass the entrance to Lot C and follow Fort Dearborn Road north through the building.  You will pass Gates 30 – 33. Watch for a sign to turn right to go to Gate 37. You should make the turn before heading back outside. Once you drop passengers off, the road will loop back to the entrance for Lot C Parking. Please note, once you are already in the parking lot, you cannot access Gate 37.

For more details about accessing the Arie Crown Theater, please visit the Venue Information Page. Please contact or (312) 906-5240 with special assistance questions or concerns.

Printing & Email/Network Accounts
Email and network login accounts for May 2009 and December 2008 graduates will be terminated on Monday, August 3rd (first Monday after the July bar exam).

May 2009 and December 2008 graduates can print to Chicago-Kent’s network printers only via their student ID card’s “cash account.”  ID card “printing accounts” and any remaining complementary pages within them will be eliminated Monday, May 18, 2009.

Please direct questions to

Email forwarding for Chicago-Kent alumni available through Chicago-Kent Alumni Association
As stated above, your network login and email account will expire on Monday, August 3 (the first Monday after the summer bar exam). Your messages will not be recoverable after August 3, so please save any important documents!

As a Chicago-Kent graduate, the Chicago-Kent Alumni Association is pleased to offer an e-mail forwarding service using an email address. This service is available through the Alumni Online Community and allows you to choose a address that will be forwarded to your specified personal email account (e.g. gmail, yahoo, or work e-mail, etc).  Your username can be your current username or you can create a new one.

The advantage of the e-mail forwarding is that once you give this forwarding address to friends and colleagues, you’ll no longer have to notify everyone in your address book of a new or discontinued e-mail address; you can simply update the email account to which the email forwarding address sends to by logging into the Online Community.

In order to access e-mail forwarding, sign up for the Chicago-Kent Alumni Online Community. Accounts for May 2009 graduates will be available by mid-July. Click here to sign up now and we will send you your login information when you have access!

For questions or concerns, please contact the Chicago-Kent Alumni Association at or 312.906.5240.
