, Herbert Ascherman Professor of Economics, Harvard University

Commentators:

, Executive Director, Workforce Innovation and Regional Economic Development, Iowa Association of Business & Industry
Donald Kennedy, Director, High Performance Work Organization Department, International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers

The current economic downturn has the U.S. labor market under a great deal of stress. Professor Freeman will make the argument that the problems of the 21st century are problems that require changes in rules and regulations that direct markets and resources toward the public good. He will show that deregulation and efforts to weaken unions have had a modest impact (with more impact on distribution than on efficiency), and that labor has been and will be massively affected by how we respond to the challenges that require public collective responses. Professor Freeman contends that as the collective voice of workers, labor can be a major force in addressing these problems. He will provide some examples of specific reforms and areas for change.

Ms. Didier will comment on the success of a small Midwestern community to reclaim 1,000 of the 1,900 jobs lost by the closing of Maytag. Mr. Kennedy will discuss the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers partnership with employers in developing high performance workplaces, including its successful efforts with Harley-Davidson.
