Spring Office Hours

The Career Services Office will close at 5 p.m. Monday - Friday. Evening appointments with Career Strategists will be available for alumnae/i and evening students by appointment only on Thursdays, from 5 - 6:30 p.m.

Office closings: February 5th, 6th, & 7th for Strategies for Excellence: Law as a Profession 2002.

Alumni Advisor Network

To access the Alumni Advisor Network, follow the steps below:

  • Click on the Alumni Advisor Network link from the Career Services Office web page. This will take you to the web mail log in.
  • Log into web mail.
  • Scroll down the left hand side and select the "web for students" icon.
  • Within "web for students" scroll down the links on the left hand side till you come to the Alumni Advisor Link.

If you log into web mail and do not see the "web for students" icon, contact the computer help desk at pchelp@kentlaw.edu.

Working in NY this Summer & Need a Place to Live?

Each summer New York University hosts a Summer Living in New York program. Student apartment style residences are made available to summer interns and associates working in the NY legal and business communities. The next session will run from May 26 - August 10, 2002. The application, as well as further information, will be available online in January. If interested, be sure to apply early as space fills up quickly each year.

Programs/Seminars

Summer Opportunities for 1Ls

Wondering how most students spend the summer after their first year?  Not sure what types of jobs are available or what the timeline is for hiring?  Then you won't want to miss this program on Tuesday, January 29th at 12:00 p.m., Room 510, as second and third year students talk about what they did the summer following their first year. 

Interviewing Skills

How does a legal interview differ from other interviews?  How do you prepare? How do you sell yourself effectively?  On Wednesday, January 30th at 3:00 p.m., Room 210, a panel of current students will discuss what it's like to interivew for judicial externships and at  law firms and government and public interest agencies.  Don't miss this opportunity to learn from those who have gone before and succeeded in legal interviews.

Mock Interviews

One of the best ways to prepare for upcoming interviews is to participate in a mock interview.  Judith Saunders, former Assistant Dean of Career Services at Chicago-Kent, will conduct mock interviews, by appointment only, on Monday & Tuesday, February 4th & 5th, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Room 713. Interested students should sign up in the CSO ASAP as slots fill up quickly. She requests that students pick up a packet of information and drop off a copy of their resume when signing up. Students are encouraged to come dressed as they would for an actual interview.  Sessions are videotaped, after which students will receive a candid critique of their current interviewing skills while watching the video.  Students interested in keeping a copy of their session are encouraged to bring their own blank videotape to the mock interview. 

Practising Law Institute (PLI)

PLI will sponsor Drafting Corporate Agreements on February 4th in Chicago.

Follow the links to the Law School Services area to find out about resources offered to the law school community and how to apply for scholarships to programs. If you are interested in attending a program on scholarship, send a scholarship application ASAP. Scholarship applications are available in the Career Services Office or on-line. PLI typically asks for one month's advance notice in granting scholarships.

Be sure to check the system on a daily or weekly basis and remember to peruse postings within the past 3 months to avoid overlooking postings you may have missed previously. The Federal Communications Bar Association Foundation's Robert E. Lee Scholarship and Internship Fund:

For the ninth consectutive year, the Federal Communications Bar Association Foundation will award at least four $2,500 stipends to law students employed as unpaid summer interns in communications positions with government offices. Applicants will be selected on the basis of a demonstrated interest in the communications field, involvement in community activities, and their dependence on financial assistance in order to accept an unpaid internship. See the Resource Coordinator in the Career Services Office for applications. Applications are due March 15, 2002.

Adoption Law Summer Opportunities for 1Ls & 2L

Interested in adoption law and related fields like abuse, neglect and dependency? Wondering where
to find jobs in these practice areas? The Dave Thomas Center for Adoption Law at Capital
University Law School has the answer. Students can log on to a Summer Jobs Clearinghouse designed to place law students from around the country in summer jobs in and around the field of adoption law. The site, www.law.capital.edu/adoption, allows students to apply for any posted positions through the submission of an on-line application. Matches are made on a rolling basis so it's best to apply early. The matching process is described on the web-site under the "Jobs Clearinghouse" button.

Air Force JAG Corps Seeks 2Ls & 3Ls

The Air Force will be interviewing 2Ls and 3Ls at the main campus on Tuesday, February 12th. Any interested students should send their cover letter and resume to Maj. Curtis L. American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law Racial & Ethnic Minority Judicial Externship Program

The American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law is now accepting applications for their racial and ethnic minority judicial externship program. The Section of Antitrust Law will provide a $1,500 stipend to minority law students who serve as externs for state and federal judges in Chicago,

Army JAG Corps Seeks 1Ls & 3Ls

1Ls & 2Ls - John J. Curtin, Jr. Stipends Available for Public Interest Work During Summer 2002

The Curtin Justice Fund Legal Internship Program is managed jointly by the ABA Commission on Homelessness and Poverty and the Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants. The program will pay a $2,500 stipend to students who obtain employment during summer 2002 in a bar association or legal services program designed to prevent homelessness or assist homeless or indigent clients or their advocates. Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated interest in public interest law and experience working with poor people or on issues affecting them. For additional information and application materials, see the Resource Specialist in the Career Services Office or visit the ABA web site. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2002 but early submissions are encouraged.

1Ls & 2Ls - Equal Justice America Funding for Public Interest Work During Summer 2002

Since 1993, Equal Justice America has been funding law students all over the country to work meeting the legal needs of the poor. They are offering $3,250 fellowships to 1L & 2L Chicago-Kent students who choose to work FT for a 10 week period for organizations providing direct civil legal services for the poor in summer 2002. To apply: send a cover letter describing commitment and interest in providing legal services to the poor; a resume; 2 letters of recommendation and an employment confirmation letter from the hiring organization to: Equal Justice America, 3010 Fox Chase Drive, Midlothian, VA 23112. All materials must be sent together and be received by March 18, 2002.

Job Fairs

Fourteenth Annual Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference

The Fourteenth Annual Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference, a job fair hosted by the Chicago area law schools, will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at Northwestern University School of Law. This job fair brings together law students from the Midwest and public interest employers from the Midwest and beyond. It is open to first, second and third year law students who are seeking summer law clerk or entry level attorney positions in the public sector. The program also includes "table talk," an opportunity to network with representatives from public sector organizations, and a panel presentation regarding a relevant public interest law career issue.

Information about this year's participating employers will be available in a binder in the Career Services Office after Monday, January 14th. Year 2002 Penny Severns Illinois Women In Government Conference & Scholarship Award Program

Illinois Women in Government (IWIG) is a bi-partisan organization that encourages female students
interested in local, state, and federal government to apply for paid attendance at the 2002
conference. The 19th annual conference will be held at the Springfield Hilton on March 25 & 26, 2002. The purpose of the conference is to encourage more women to seek elective and
appointive office at all levels of government, to educate women about governmental issues and the
political process, to promote participation in public affairs, and to provide a forum for women's
issues. The award will include the cost of registration, conference meals, mileage allowance or
train/bus fare, and lodging costs. Each award recipient will be matched with a mentor - either a state
government official or private sector leader. See the Career Services Office or www.illinoiswomeningov.org for application information. Application deadline is February 1, 2002.
