14th
Several members of the CSO will be
attending the National Association for Law Placement annual
conference Tuesday, April 9th through Sunday, April 14th
in Kansas City, MO. The conference provides an opportunity
for our office to market the law school and our students
to hundreds of legal employers from across the country.
In addition, we will attend training sessions to identify
new and creative ways to strengthen the services we provide
to you and our diverse alumnae/i constituency. The office
will remain open during this time, however, counseling
appointments will not be available.

Programs/Seminars
Introduction to the Fall On-Campus
Interviewing Program for Class
of 2003 & 2004 Students
During the fall, legal employers will either come on-campus
to interview students, or request resumes directly from
students for summer associate and entry-level attorney positions.
On Tuesday, April 23rd at Noon,
Room TBA, and at 5:00 p.m., Room TBA,
members of the CSO will discuss the on-campus
interview process, contacting employers directly, what to
do if you do not meet a particular employer's hiring criteria
and how to prepare over the summer. In addition, the
information will assist students participating in the Patent
Law Interview Program, Cook County Bar Association Minority
Job Fair and other interviewing opportunities. 1L
Day students who plan to participate in the interview program
next fall are strongly encouraged to attend this program.
2L Day/Evening & 3L Evening students who have not previously
participated but intend to next year should also be sure
to attend.
If you're a 1L evening student switching to the day
program and will fulfill all requirements to graduate by
May 2004, you must notify our office of your division change.
Please note: 2003 graduates (including December
2002 graduates) interested in working for the Cook County
State's Attorney's Office must register
for an on-campus interview in order to be considered for
employment with their office.
"Lawyer's Workshop" Sponsored by the ISBA
The ISBA is sponsoring a "Lawyer's Workshop"
on Saturday, May 4th
at the John Marshall Law School. The workshop will allow
practitioners to be exposed to changes, trends and developing
areas of the law. Law students are invited to attend the
program and luncheon for $25. Registration forms are available
in the Career Services Office.
Resources
NALP Directory of Legal Employers
The NALP
Directory of Legal Employers is now available online.
The online directory connects students to comprehensive
information on more than 1,500 legal employers. In addition
to employer NALP sheets, the directory includes NALP Workplace
Questionnaires, which provide a sense of an employer's culture
and work environment, and NALPline, which offers expanded
information on an employer's salaries. The directory is
fully searchable, free to all users and available 24/7.
Don't overlook this important resource when researching
potential employers.

Exciting Fall Externship Opportunity with the U.S.
Attorney's Office, Northern District of Illinois, for
Students Who Will Have Completed Their Second Year by July,
2002
If you are interested in exposure to and possible participation
in federal trial and appellate practice while assisting
the U.S. Attorney's Office in handling its multitude of
important cases, please pick up an application from Professor
Gross in Room 617.
Completed applications must be
received at the Office of the U.S. Attorney by Friday, April
12, 2002. The reason for this accelerated date
is because each accepted extern must go through a security
clearance, which takes several weeks.
To receive law school credit for this externship, should
you be selected by the US Attorney's Office, you must enroll
in the law school's Legal Externship Program. The law school's
externship applications will be available in early October
in Room 600 Law Offices and in the Career Services office.
Professor Gross will be happy to answer any questions you
may have about either the Externship Program or the externship
position with the US Attorney's Office.

are awarded each year to law students from schools nationwide.
Fellowships are for one year but may be renewed for a second
year if requested and approved by the grantmaking panel.
Class of 2003 students who are interested in applying for
a Fellowship must have secured a position with an organization
by the time of application. Applications
for 2003 Fellowships are due next fall on October 7, 2002.

Legal Externship Program for Current 2Ls Wanting to Do
a Summer or Fall 2002 Externship
Do you wish to develop your legal skills, gain practical
legal experience in a specialized area of law with a corporation,
firm or government agency, and make yourself more marketable
to prospective employers upon graduation? If so, consider
applying to the Legal Externship Program for the Summer
or Fall 2002 Semester.
The Legal Externship Program is a 4-credit hour non-graded
program. The program is open predominantly to students in
their last two semesters of law school.
An extern can choose a private or public, civil or criminal
practice and is required to work a minimum of 32 hours a
week for Summer Semester or 16 hours a week for Fall Semester
at his/her designated placement. Externs interested in civil
law may select to work under the supervision of general
counsel in major corporations or under the supervision of
designated teaching lawyers in well-known firms or specific
government agencies. Externs may specialize in such diverse
legal areas as tax, commodities, securities, corporate,
health care, medical malpractice, general corporate law,
etc. Those interested in criminal law may choose to work
with the States Attorney's Office, Public Defender's Office,
or the US Attorney's Office. Many externships offer the
externs opportunities to obtain a 711 license and appear
in court.
Information about the program, placements, student choices
and an accompanying application form are available in the
Law Offices reception area and in the Career Services office.
You must meet with Professor Gross prior to turning in your
application, so that you can discuss your externship choice
possibilities.
If you are interested in learning more about externship
opportunities or in applying to the program, please see
Professor Vivien Gross in Room 617.
