Welcome New CSO Assistant Directors

We are pleased to welcome Melanie Kushnir and Elizabeth Pohlman as Assistant Directors of the Career Services Office. Melanie and Elizabeth replace Christine Sturman and Navreet Heneghan who left us this past spring to be full-time moms.

Melanie earned her J.D. at The Ohio State University College of Law and her B.A. at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. For the past several years since her graduation from law school, Melanie has practiced as an Assistant Public Guardian with the Juvenile Division of the Cook County Public Guardian's Office. During law school she served as the Facilitator for the Child Protection Agency in Sarasota, Florida, clerked at the Office of the Corporation Counsel in Washington, D.C., and was a National Service Legal Corps NAPIL Fellow with the New Hampshire Public Defender.

Elizabeth earned both her Juris Doctor and undergraduate degrees at the University of Wisconsin. Following graduation from law school, she was in private practice at a general practice firm in the U.S. Virgin Islands. While in law school, Elizabeth participated in a number of clinical programs including the Innocence Project and the Prosecutor's Project, and served as an extern with both Legal Assistance to Institutionalized Persons and the National Labor Relations Board. She also worked as a law clerk for the UW legal department and as an Administrator for the Center for Public Representation in Madison.

Summer 2003 Volunteer Positions Available

The Cook County State's Attorney's Office still has some openings for Summer 2003 volunteer law clerks. There are positions available in several Bureaus, with many openings in the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau. Students can work 20-40 hours per week. If interested, go to and print out and submit a law clerk application as soon as possible.

2003 Equal Justice Works Fellowship Opportunities

Equal Justice Works has several Route B Fellowships available for third year law students and recent grads. Check their website at for all information and deadlines. These fellowships are all across the country with various agencies. All Fellows are eligible to apply for Equal Justice Works Loan Repayment Assistance Program. All Fellows will also attend two Equal justice Works retreats and participate in a national network of fellows.

Akerman, Senterfitt & Eidson in Miami, Florida will be hosting a reception at their offices in August for any current 1Ls with ties to Florida, or who will be working there this summer, and/or who plan to practice in Florida upon graduation. Fellowships Available

Request for Fellowship Proposals

Community Legal Services, Inc. will sponsor candidates for post graduate public interest fellowships provided by the Skadden Fellowship Foundation, Independence Foundation, and Equal Justice Works for positions to commence in September, 2004. See handout # 43 for complete details. All applications must be submitted by July 15, 2003.

Job Postings

All employment opportunities, paid or unpaid, clerking or volunteer, internship or externship, or fellowship, can be found in the new LawMatch system. To access this system, go to the current job posting system and click on the link for LawMatch Job Listings. Register yourself as a user, even if you have previously registered with LawMatch through another avenue. You will then be allowed to access the job postings. If you have your old password and student ID, please continue using them. If you haven't received your password, please contact the Career Services Office to get it. Remember to use the dashes in your Social Security # when entering your username and password.

PSLawNet Fellowship Corner

Interested in pursuing a fellowship upon graduation? Then be sure to check out PSLawNet's new "Fellowship Corner" which includes the full text of Yale's Fellowship Application Tips for 2002-2003, along with the expanded Appendix listing print and online fellowship resources. The site also contains a Fellowship Calendar with a chronological listing of application deadlines--a big help for potential applicants in planning and preparing their materials. Students can access the Fellowship Corner at the top of the left sidebar menu on the PSLawNet home page.

Chicago Area Law Firm List

As of Monday, October 14th, the Chicago Area Law Firm List, also known as the 4 or More List became available on-line in a password protected searchable database. E-mail notification containing information about the link and user name and password was sent out that afternoon so be sure to check you e-mail. Although every attempt is made at keeping the database current, some information may become out of date due to firm mergers, contact people leaving their firms, etc. It's suggested that all information be double-checked prior to sending out any cover letters and resumes. If you should learn of any changes, please notify our office via e-mail so we can update the database accordingly. Please contact if you have any questions or concerns. Please note, the password for this site is not the same as your job posting password.

Summer Semester Office Hours

The Career Services Office will be open throughout the summer. We will close at 5 p.m. Monday - Friday. Evening appointments with Career Strategists will be available by appointment only on Thursdays, from 5 - 6:30 p.m. Call 312-906-5200 to schedule an appointment.
